1 2015 Special Events Department This department contains both YOUTH and ADULT contests. All contests in this department are held DURING THE FAIR. Please read each division carefully as rules and procedures may vary. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: June 25, On-line entry is available through our website Registration forms to mail in are available at or the Exhibits Office. Exhibitor tags will be mailed in July to the name and address on registration form. Receive one (1) FREE admission ticket if you enter 10 or more items (all departments combined). ENTRY FEES: ADULTS: $2.00 per entry (Maximum fee for any adult exhibitor = $50 IF you mail or walk-in a PAPER Registration Form. Total number of entries for mail or walk-in entries shall be limited to a total of 75. If you register online, EVERY entry will be charged $2.00 with no upper limit.) YOUTH: $1.00 per entry (Maximum fee for any youth exhibitor = $25 IF you mail or walk-in a PAPER Registration Form. Total number of entries for mail or walk-in entries shall be limited to a total of 75. If you register online, EVERY entry will be charged $1.00 with no upper limit.) CHECK-IN and CHECK-OUT: All contests in this department take place DURING the Fair. Check-in and Check-out dates and times vary. (Be sure you receive your admission ticket for each contest.) REGULATIONS: 1. All entries are governed by the Life & Arts Rules and the rules for this department. 2. Exhibitor is limited to one (1) exhibit in a class. 3. Allowable age of exhibitors varies in each division. Please read division descriptions carefully. 4. Articles that have been exhibited at any previous Ozark Empire Fair are not eligible for entry. 5. Exhibits must have been completed within the last two (2) years, unless otherwise indicated in specific division rules. 6. Any exhibit to be displayed by hanging must be provided with a suitable hanging device. 7. Superintendents will have the authority to remove and dispose of foods that become unsightly. 8. For any foods competitions, exhibit must be made from scratch (no mixes) unless instructions specifically allow mixes. Read division rules carefully. 9. For any foods competitions that require submitting the recipe, the recipe should be typed on 8½ x11" paper. Exhibitor number and class number must be included on recipe. 10. Prize money will be paid to the number of places indicated for each class, if quality merits. Judges may occasionally award ribbons for additional placings, but no money will be paid for additional ribbons. 11. Champion ribbons will only be awarded to divisions of three or more classes in which the average entry per class is three exhibitors with at least one entry per class. 12. In order to have this exhibit of as high quality as possible, the right is reserved to reject all unsuitable exhibits, to determine that all rules and regulations have been followed and that no identification of the exhibitor in any form is displayed during judging. 13. 4 DIVISION 502 HEALTHY CREATIONS FRIDAY, JULY 31, 1 p.m. a. Check-in: FRIDAY, JULY 31, Noon - 1 p.m. at the East Hall Judging Center. Judging begins at 1 p.m. and is open to the public. (This is during the Fair, so be sure you get an admission ticket from the Exhibits Office when you get your exhibitor tags.) b. Entries should be reduced in calories, fat, sodium, etc. Increased fiber content and reduced sugar content are also desirable. Entries could also focus on being allergy-friendly (i.e. gluten-free, dye-free, etc.). c. Entries will be judged on Flavor (30%) Reduction of Calories, Fat and Sodium (30%), Appearance (15%), Originality & Creativity (15%) and Ease of Preparation (10%). d. The exhibit should be packaged to maintain proper serving temperature (hot or cold). No refrigeration or heating elements will be available. e. 5 DIVISION WINGS FRIDAY, JULY 31, 5 p.m. Prize money: $8 - $6 - $4 Adults and Youth a. Check-in: FRIDAY, JULY 31, 4 p.m. - 5 p.m. at the East Hall Judging Center. Youth competition begins at 5 p.m. and is open to the public. Adult competition follows youth. (This is during the Fair, so be sure you get an admission ticket from the Exhibits Office when you get your exhibitor tags.) b. If your birdhouse or feeder is designed for a specific type of bird, write it on the exhibitor tag. c. Houses and feeders may be made of any material (wood, gourd, etc.). Kits NOT allowed. d. All exhibits will be displayed for the remainder of the Fair and will be released on regular check-out day, Sunday, August 9, Youth Adult 1 11 Bird house, functional 2 12 Bird feeder, functional 3 13 Bird house, decorative DIVISION HAMMONDS PRODUCTS BLACK WALNUT COOKING CONTEST SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 1:00 p.m. HAMMONDS PRODUCTS COMPANY, Stockton, will award 1 st - $50; 2 nd - $30; 3 rd - $20. a. Check-in: SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, Noon - 1 p.m. at the East Hall Judging Center. Judging begins at 1:00 p.m. and is open to the public. (This is during the Fair, so be sure you get an admission ticket from the Exhibits Office when you get your exhibitor tags.) b. Exhibitor is limited to one recipe of a salad, meat dish, vegetable dish, pasta, etc. using Black Walnuts. NO baked goods (cakes, cookies, muffins, etc.): See Food Department for these items. c. Each recipe must use at least ¼ cup American Black Walnuts. d. Exhibit must be packaged to maintain proper serving temperature (hot or cold). No refrigeration or heating elements will be available. e. Each exhibit must be accompanied by recipe typed on 8½"x11" paper. Exhibitor NUMBER must be listed on recipe. All recipes become the property of Hammons Products and the Ozark Empire Fair. f. 6 DIVISION PIES SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 3 p.m. CHAMPION RIBBON a. Check-in: SATURDAY, JULY 26, 1:30 p.m. - 3 p.m. at the East Hall Judging Center. Judging begins at 3 p.m. and is open to the public. (This is during the Fair, so be sure you get an admission ticket from the Exhibits Office when you get your exhibitor tags.) b. NO custard or cream pies will be accepted due to safety concerns since we don t have refrigeration available to store pies before judging. c. All pies must be made from scratch. Exhibitor s choice to enter whole pie or half pie, in suitable container. d. Exhibitor tags must be attached to container, not to wrapper. e. Each exhibit must be accompanied by the recipe typed on 8½ x11" paper. Exhibitor, division, and class number must be listed on recipe. All recipes become the property of the Ozark Empire Fair. SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 5 p.m. Prize money $5 - $4 - $3 Adults and Youth The Ozarks is well known for its woodlands, rumor has it that living here is often referred to as living in the sticks! Select your best sticks for competition. If you don t have any sticks, friends or neighbors would probably loan you some - just be sure to ask first, please. Or, you may simply need to get out of the city and spend some time in the sticks. a. Check-in: SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 4 p.m. - 5 p.m. at the East Hall Judging Center. Judging begins at 5 p.m. and is open to the public. (This is during the Fair, so be sure you get an admission ticket from the Exhibits Office when you get your exhibitor tags.) b. All exhibits will be displayed for the remainder of the Fair and will be released on regular check-out day, Sunday, August 9, Youth Youth Adult 10 and under STICK ART - Any craft made primarily with a natural stick or sticks. May be any size stick(s) - just remember that you have to carry it in! One item, may be decorative or functional. Item must used natural sticks (no craft sticks, toothpicks, etc.). Examples: painted stick, stick with glued-on decorations (lace, buttons, sequins, etc.), several sticks secured together (glue/wire/etc.) to make a sculpture, a faerie wand, fishing pole, etc BEST CREATIVE WALKING STICK - Let your imagination roll as you create the perfect walking stick. Examples: a carved cane, a decorated hiking stick, etc. Best creative walking sticks will be judged on originality, creativity, and craftsmanship BEST NATURAL WALKING STICK - Winning stick will be the one that utilizes its fortitude as a walking stick in all of its natural beauty. 7 DIVISION 508 COOK S CHALLENGE SUNDAY, AUGUST 2, 1 p.m. CHAMPION RIBBON Prize money: $8 - $6 - $4 Adults Only Fancy yourself a creative chef? Find out if you have what it takes to win the champion ribbon in our premier Cook s Challenge. Using the list of ingredients given, create your best appetizer, main dish, and dessert to impress our judges and fair patrons. a. Check-in: SUNDAY, AUGUST 2, in the East Hall Judging Center between Noon - 1 p.m. Judging begins at 1 p.m. and is open to the public. (This is during the Fair, so be sure you get an admission ticket from the Exhibits Office when you get your exhibitor tag.) b. Each dish must include all of the given ingredients. (These should be underlined in recipes.) c. Other ingredients may be included but no mixes may be used. All recipes must be from scratch. d. To be eligible for the champion ribbon and corresponding prize money, competitor must enter all three classes. e. Exhibit must be packaged to maintain proper serving temperature (hot or cold). No refrigeration or heating elements will be available. f. All non-winning entries will be released after judging. Winning entries will remain on display through the Fair. Each exhibit must be made entirely of fresh fruit and/or vegetables with the exception of connective material (toothpicks, pretzels, etc.). c. May be garden grown or purchased. d. The exhibit should be free-standing on a base of the exhibitor s choosing. e. Non-winning exhibits will be released after judging and must be picked up or be discarded. 9 DIVISION 512 FARAWAY FUSIONS MONDAY, AUGUST 3, 3 p.m. Can t get enough of your favorite Asian food, but have a craving for some Mexican flavor? Why not meld the two together into a whole new recipe? Faraway Fusions gives the creative cook an opportunity to blend cooking styles and/or flavors from different places to present a brand new dish. a. Check-in: MONDAY, AUGUST 3, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the East Hall Judging Center. Judging begins at 3 p.m. and is open to the public. (This is during the Fair, so be sure you get an admission ticket from the Exhibits Office when you get your exhibitor tags.) b. Entries should be a blend of at least two distinct cuisine types (i.e. Italian and Creole). c. Entries will be judged on Flavor (40%), Originality & Creativity (35%), Appearance (25%). d. The exhibit should be packaged to maintain proper serving temperature (hot or cold). No refrigeration or heating elements will be available. e. 10 DIVISION 514 PINEWOOD and POWDERPUFF DERBY CAR RACE MONDAY, AUGUST 3, 7 p.m. Awards will be given to 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd in each group. Champion: Ribbon a. Check-in: MONDAY, AUGUST 3, 6-6:45 p.m. at the Exhibits Office in the East Hallway of the E*Plex. Race begins at 7 p.m. on the patio in front of the E*Plex and is open to the public. (This is during the Fair, so be sure you get an admission ticket from the Exhibits Office when you get your exhibitor tag.) b. NO FEE to enter the Pinewood Derby Race if your derby car is entered in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Youth 10 and Under, or Youth Departments. BUT YOU MUST REGISTER your entry so we can send admission tickets for you and your driver. (If additional family members plan to attend, they will need to purchase admission tickets. Exhibitors can purchase discount tickets on the Registration Form or online.) c. This contest is RACE only. Your Pinewood Derby Car will be judged on construction and appearance, enter your car for both the Race (Division 514) PLUS regular judging (Division 302 Cub Scouts Projects, class 212; Division 303 Boy Scouts Projects, class 321). Pinewood Derby cars not entered in Cub Scout Projects, Boy Scout Projects, Girl Scouts, Youth 10 and Under, or Youth will not be allowed to race. You ll bring your car in for regular judging on Saturday, July 25 (8 a.m. - 6 p.m.). On race day, you need to report to the Boy Scout, Girl Scout, or Youth displays to pick up your car from the Superintendents and then check in for the race at the Exhibits Office. d. Exhibitors may only enter 1 car in any division, all departments combined. Example: You may NOT enter a derby car in Boy Scouts and in Youth Duplicate car entries will be ignored and fees forfeited. e. 11 DIVISION HERITAGE RECIPES TUESDAY, AUGUST 4, 3 p.m. Prize money: $4 - $3 - $2 Any recipe dating from before A family favorite passed down from your grandmother. A nostalgic recipe from a cookbook you found at the flea market. Reminders of the past. a. Check-in: TUESDAY, AUGUST 4, 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. at the East Hall Judging Center. Judging begins at 3 p.m. and is open to the public. (This is during the Fair, so be sure you get an admission ticket from the Exhibits Office when you get your exhibitor tags.) b. Exhibit must be made from scratch (no mixes) and may be served hot or cold. The exhibit must be packaged to maintain proper serving temperature (hot or cold). No refrigeration or heating elements will be available. (No custard or cream pies since we don t have refrigeration.) c. Non-winning exhibits will be released following judging. d. Each exhibit must be accompanied by the recipe typed on 8½"x11" paper. Exhibitor number must be on recipe (no names, please).
