A radio is an important source of weather and emergency information during a storm. Have sufficient heating fuel, as regular sources may be cut off. Have emergency heating equipment and fuel (a gas fireplace, wood burning stove or fireplace) so you can keep at least one room liveable. Be sure the room is well ventilated. To keep pipes from freezing, wrap them in insulation or layers of newspapers, covering the newspapers with plastic to keep out moisture. If your water supply could be affected (a well-water pump system), fill your bathtub and spare containers with water. Pouring a pail of water from the tub directly into the bowl can flush a toilet. Avoid opening your refrigerator and freezer to maintain the cold air inside. Food can stay cold in a full refrigerator for up to 24 hours, and in a well-packed freezer for 48 hours (24 hours if it is half-packed). Snowdrifts can also be used as a makeshift freezer for food. If you have medication that requires refrigeration, check with your pharmacist for guidance on proper storage during an extended outage. Make sure you prepare an area outdoors where you can use a cookstove or BBQ to prepare meals, this area must be ventilated. In order to protect against possible voltage irregularities that can occur when power is restored, you should unplug all sensitive electronic equipment, including TVs, stereo, VCR, microwave oven, computer, cordless telephone, answering machine etc.

13 Cultural Day October 11, 2012 We were fortunate to have had a beautiful day to gather together to celebrate our culture. We learned about trapping from Dennis Ottawa, smoking meat from Barbara and Maurice Tenasco, making bannock from Anna and Eleanor Cote, and many other important skills that so many willing community members provided. Staff and students would like to thank the following people who gave their time to come and teach us the skills and knowledge that have been passed down to them or donated meat that we could use to teach the traditional cooking skills. 39 Stephen Lawrence Manatch On Friday Oct 12, 2012, Stephen Lawrence Manatch (53) passed away. Stephen was beloved son of Florence and William Manatch predeceased, and loving brother to Randy, Monique and Marc. Stephen was Uncle to Jeanine, Mary-Ann, Willum and Liam and nephew to Aunt Helen Coles, Uncle Fred Coles and Aunt Eleanor Cote. He will be missed by many cousins, family and dear friends. Service for Stephen will be held at Kitigan Zibi Community Hall on Saturday Oct 20 at 3:00 pm. A Memorial Service will be held in Toronto on November 3rd at 3pm in the Thistledown United Church, Kipling Ave, Etobicoke, On. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
