1 THE ROTARY CLUB OF DINGLEY VILLAGE BULLETIN From the President Our Community Bullying Forum with Oscar Yildiz this week was a great success. Oscar is certainly an interesting and motivating speaker. His passion for preventing bullying is catchy as he demonstrated. There are many different types of bullying across all age groups from young children in the playground, cyber bullying, inside the family home, gender orientated, to our senior citizens. For the victim it is sometimes hard to recognise or hard to speak about it how do you stop it how do you cope? How do you stop it from happening in the future? For the Bully do they recognise that they are actually bullying others? Why do they behave this way. This is a very complex problem we have in society. History shows us that aggressive behaviour in the school yard was simply seen as mischief and a normal part of growing up. The term toughen up princess was often used. 11th March, 2015 This week we have Jane Yang from the City of Kingston talking to us about volunteering. This is our opportunity to be updated and to ask questions see you there. Oscar says that people s values, perceptions and the culture around bullying are changing. Most people are now conscious of what bullying is. UNICEF NEEDS YOUR FOREIGN COINS More and more of us are heading overseas and we always seem to return with useless foreign coins that end up in the bottom of a drawer somewhere. Vic Smith International Director - will leave a container on the table every week let s see how much we can raise between now & July. The Jewellery monies are supporting some really great projects. The Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia was sent $4, This is to fund the 2nd year of training for a midwife in Ethiopia. It is a 4 year course so our aim is to fund the full 4 years. With the Golf Day and ANZAC Services coming up very soon it is now all hands on deck Gary and Kevan have both put their whole hearts & souls into these activities but they need our help please ask them what you can do to help. R.C. of Mordialloc has their Third Gnome and Fairy Peter Scullin Reserve on 29 March. This should be a great day for them. 4 Coming Events Roster for writing to Caroline Caroline Vitalis is a student at The School of St Jude in Tanzania who we have been co-sponsoring for several years. Caroline is now in her final year of High School and she hopes to be a doctor. She particularly enjoys receiving postcards so if you are travelling don t forget to pick up a postcard to send to her. Remember: If you send a letter to Caroline, the school has requested that you do not put your personal address on the letter. 9 New Zealand war veteran s ANZAC tattoo sparks social media frenzy When New Zealand man Bruce Neal left a Wellington tattoo parlour last week, he knew he was doing so with a permanent mark on his chest; but little did he know the mark he was about to make on social media. The 59-year old war veteran waited 41 years until he came across a design he loved - a series of ANZAC soldiers made up in the shape of New Zealand's iconic emblem, the silver fern. The words 'Lest We Forget' are written underneath. He saw the image on a Wellington waterfront where WWI soldiers had left for Gallipoli around a century ago, and when his wife spotted the same design on television soon afterwards, Mr Neal knew it was a sign. From Rotary Down Under Red Cross wants your blood Donating blood is a potentially lifesaving gift, with Rotarians urged to get behind the Vampire Challenge, a nationwide campaign aiming to highlight the importance of giving flood and to boost existing stocks. The sequel to Run for Your Wife finds the bigamist taxi driver John Smith still keeping his two families in different parts of London, both happy and blissfully unaware of each other, for the time being anyway.
