6 Section R1 (13 marks) Read the following passage and answer all the questions. Tattoos Tattoos have been part of human decoration since the Stone Age and were present in nearly every culture from the Romans to the Native Americans. The word tattoo was brought to Europe by the explorer James Cook, when he returned in 1771 from his first voyage to New Zealand. In his journal, he referred to an operation called tattaw, meaning scarring, which he described clearly. Before this, tattooing in Europe had been described as painting. Julius Caesar referred to painted decoration when he came to Britain in 55 BC. Experts believe the name Britain comes from an old Celtic word Brittos, meaning painted people because of the custom of Ancient Britons tattooing themselves. In the 19 th century, tattooing became popular for a while among European aristocracy. Even King George V had a dragon tattoo on his arm. It was also very popular among the lower classes. By the late 1800s, 90% of the British navy was tattooed but, for the middle classes, tattoos remained uncommon. The majority of people in Europe and North America with tattoos were sailors or criminals. Certainly nobody who wanted to be considered respectable had one. Tattoos have become acceptable in Western societies fairly recently. Like many other fashions, this one started in America. After the mid-1940s, military-type tattoos became common and many shops opened, offering tattoos of numerous designs at reasonable prices. However, by 1960 many areas made tattooing illegal as associated medical problems increased. Such a ban was enforced in New York City between 1961 and Despite this, having a tattoo was still seen as an expression of individualism and something cool. Now, twenty per cent of men and women in the western world aged between 18 and 35 have tattoos. Almost eighty per cent of these had their first tattoo between the age of 18 and 24. Tattooed celebrities include David Beckham and Lady Gaga. Even Samantha Cameron, the British prime minister s wife, has one. She has been criticised often in the press for her business dealings but never for the discreet tattoo of a dolphin on her ankle. However, one in three says they wish they d never had their tattoo, with tattoo removal becoming almost as popular as tattooing itself. 8 Section R2 (7 marks) Read the five short news stories below. Choose from the articles (A to E) and complete the answer grid. The articles may be chosen more than once. One has been done for you as an example. A. A man has become trapped at the bottom of a 1,000 metre deep cave after an accident happened while he was climbing yesterday. The 52 year-old man suffered head and leg injuries when loose rocks fell on him. It took his friend 12 hours to climb to the surface and raise the alarm. The first four rescuers arrived at the scene this morning, and now over 200 people are involved in the rescue operation, which could take days. B. Building developers and nature conservationists have become locked in angry discussions after millions of bats were discovered in Bracken Cave, Danby. The developers plan to build dozens of homes near the cave, which according to Bat Conservation International, is home to 5 million bats. They feed on the many insects in the area, but if the bats are destroyed, experts worry that farmers crops will be destroyed by the insects, and that they will become a pest to people in the area. Further discussions are planned for next week. C. Three cavers had to be rescued last night after the cave they were in flooded. At around midnight, one of the cavers wives contacted the police after her husband did not return, and specialist cave divers were sent to look for them. Due to a very high tide, the entrance passage had flooded, blocking their exit. Luckily the climbers had experience of diving equipment and were brought out one by one. Police have issued a statement, warning of the dangers of entering unknown caves. Fortunately these guys were experienced. Others might not have been so lucky. Which article, A, B, C, D or E? D. A dramatic rescue operation has ended successfully, after a thirteen year-old boy was pulled from a 20 metre deep cave. It is believed that he fell through the narrow cave entrance on his way to school as he crossed some rocky land. Unable to climb out and with a broken leg, he stayed there for 4 hours until someone heard his cries for help. It took the team 8 hours to rescue him. Speaking from hospital, the boy admits he was scared but is now just looking forward to going home. E. Two surfers were pulled to safety by helicopter after they became trapped in a coastal cave in extreme weather conditions on Saturday. Both surfers got caught in huge waves off the south coast and were forced onto the rocks by Rowland Cave. Other surfers were unable to reach them, and called the authorities. The surfers, who both needed hospital treatment, but have since been allowed home, blamed the situation on an entirely wrong weather forecast. The forecast was for a fine afternoon.
