2 W ORKSHOP L indsey 1 Cole Feb 13 T extured Acrylics Lyndsey gave us a Master Class in the use and application of texture to painting using modelling paste, marble dust and common sand m ixed with an acrylic paint base. After explaining the many techniques and processes involved, she took us through the various stages in creating a seascape step-by- step, finishing with a f inished work. I for one, having just purchased a couple of pots of texture base (although Lyndsey also had a selection of items for sale) was enthused to have a go w hen I got home. Her method involved applying the medium with a stepped trowel and loaded paints building up the required textured finish ready for over- painting, in this case, with acrylics. Her method involved dry brushing to get the required effect (rather than diluted paint which gives a smeared effect). Her advice was to have available a selection of long haired low cost fibre brushes as they would undergo considerable abrasion of the bristles in the p rocess. A few strikes of pastel colour were introduced into the rock crevices to mimic natural discolouration. The finalé was the use of the old standby in the form of a toothbrush to add the white spray against the rocks. Overall a thoroughly competent and i nstructive demonstration. 3 Salisbury Exhibition R eport 2013 I am pleased to report that the cold wet weather of recent times didn't deter people from entering our Salisbury h ospital exhibition. The exhibition was spread out over different locations within the Hospital. Staff, patients and visitors had plenty of opportunity to enjoy the pictures at d ifferent times and in different places. 74 paintings were entered although only 70 made it to the exhibition; I think two people forgot the hand- in. In total paintings sold with a possibility of two more. Congratulation to those members w ho sold. Once again we held a competition for visitors to vote for their favourite painting. It came as a complete surprise to find my painting of a baby d onkey entitled " Inquisitive" had the most votes and the runner up was Jill Leigh's beautiful painting of P olperro. I would like to thank everyone who took part in the exhibition, because it is always held just after Christmas when people don't really feel like going out. It is so nice that so many of you made the extra effort needed to take part in the exhibition. I know that it is always really appreciated by all at Salisbury H ospital. T hank you once again. 5 T rip M anet Report Exhibition T uesday 19 February 13 M anet exhibition at the R oyal Academy entitled Portraying Life We were all picked up bright and early at our various stops by the 53 seater Herringtons Coach, and even our friends from Art Groups to the east and west of Ringwood were on t ime and waiting. THANK YOU everyone for your promptness t hroughout the trip you really do make a rranging trips a pleasure. We arrived outside the Royal Academy i n Piccadilly a pproximately where we dispersed to go our own ways a nd to find some l unch. Brian and I d ined at Richoux's, a very pleasant restaurant almost o pposite the Academy with a good, varied menu a nd excellent food. In the afternoon our Group, with tickets timed and hrs, entered the main galleries of the Academy and stepped into the w orld of Manet. W e saw exquisitely painted portraits o f his artistic friends and family whom he preferred to paint, and the most varied array of blacks imaginable, i.e. used in the clothes o f his various friends, who were willing to s tand and sit for him h ats, suits, dresses, g loves etc i t a ppeared to be the m ost fashionable c olour of his time! At the end of the 170's when Manet became ill, he turned to painting in pastels which seemed an e asier option for him t han oils and hanging i n probably, the 7th gallery, is the loveliest p ortrait of Suzette Lemaire, the teenage d aughter of one of his friends. So soft and f ascinating! I do wonder if someone from our Art Society or from an Art Club within easy distance from us might one day fill the main Galleries of the Royal Academy w ith their very own Exhibition!! All in all thought it to be an excellent exhibition, after which we met outside Fortnum and Masons for our return to Ringwood. As you will see, our very own paparazzi in the form of David, has again been at work taking our best sides, and who a lso doubled up as quiz master. David kindly read out the answers to his quizzes at our comfort stop at Winchester Services, but time did not allow for a result to b e announced. However, on scanning some of the answers given, David said that there were some very bright sparks on the coach!! I am sorry that I had to jump coach on our r eturn, caused by reverse drop off in view of the unfortunate pile- up on the A31, but do h ope that everyone had a good day and a safe journey home. Thank you for cards etc., and f or supporting this trip. E ileen Palmer, ( Trips) 2013 RAS UK. All Rights Reserved. Established 196: Extend knowledge: exhibit: stimulate. Page 5 of

7 Ringwood Art S ociety Redesigned W ebsite The Society s website has now been completely re- designed with the focus on the front page being the winning paintings from the summer exhibition. This puts the focus of the website on the quality of our members work. The gallery pages could do with some updating of the paintings displayed. If you have a picture you would like to showcase on the gallery pages please it to w ebmaster@ringwoodartsociety.org together with the picture title and medium. For those who are using touch screen devices to browse the site the drop- down Gallery menu will not function properly so to compensate there are in- text links on the home page to each of the galleries. Also, on the Boston Tea Party page, although the form submission should work, the image upload function may not. As well as submitting pictures for the gallery pages each member now has the option of their own page to showcase their work. There are 17 members who have their own page with a link from their pictures on the gallery pages. If you would like your own page please send a short biography, together with selection of your paintings to: w ebmaster@ringwoodartsociety.org. Michael Clare, R AS Webmaster If anyone has any ideas or has noticed any glitches in our new w ebsite please let Mike know. R AS P ottery Workshops Many of our members had long felt that it would be great to have a ceramic section in our Exhibitions; - the fact that we thought we had no potters in the club w as a slight problem however. All that changed when Janice Fry joined up, - Janice was a tutor of ceramics at Eastleigh College for many years, and she readily agreed to advise us on the nitty gritty of displaying three dimensional work. Members will remember her gorgeous pieces at last year s preview, when we nearly sold out of pots; - hasty replacements bought in t he following morning saved the day. It was following this great success, both in terms of sales and visitor appreciation that the idea of a pottery workshop was b orne. So, on a cold afternoon in January our new Pottery group got off to a flying start with total beginners and past potters (who had somehow emerged from the woodwork ). We have no wheel or kiln, so only hand building, coiling and slab work is possible and Janice kindly fires o ur pieces at home in her own kiln. Since then we have had a further session of glazing our (now) biscuit fired works of art and a great time was had by all. The final results of this have yet to be seen, but hopefully all potters will produce at least a few items good enough to put in the next exhibition, or at least to solve t heir Christmas gift problem? Hopefully, these sessions will become a permanent part of our programme, so anyone wishing to join at a later date s hould contact Margaret Plant as usual.
