1 News & Views CO-PRINCIPALS AWARDS RECEIVED BY OUR STUDENTS On Wednesday 10 February the Red Carpet was rolled out once again for a selection of students who received the Co-Principals special award for achievements in various activities. All the students received 25 praise points for this award. The award winners included several Year 10 students for their excellent contribution during Asian Week including running dance workshops, the four Year 13 students who have received offers from Cambridge University and two Year 10 students who have been selected to perform at the World Dance Cup in Jersey. Please click here to view the full list of awardees. YEAR 11 STUDENTS VISIT BERLIN During half-term 30 Year 11 students, together with Mr Bunter, Miss Morgan and Miss Evans, travelled to Berlin for a 4-day joint History/German visit. There was a most varied programme which students report on individually below... The teachers at the Kant Gymnasium (grammar school) still use chalk boards. The students learn English from the age of 8 (Jasmin Alamo). I really enjoyed speaking to the students in the school. We talked about everything from European politics to the best places to eat. It was interesting to see their reactions when we described our uniform (Rebecca Kadwell). CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

2 YEAR 8 GEOGRAPHY STUDENTS PRODUCE EXCELLENT HOME LEARNING RESOURCES Year 8 Geography students have been working hard on their home learning to produce some outstanding resources to use with primary school children. We have been studying the Structure of the Earth and identifying the differences between the Earth s layers. The edible ones were certainly enjoyed by the class! Well done 8b/Gg2. Brilliant Home Learning! Mrs Everson - Geography

4 YEAR 11 STUDENTS VISIT BERLIN CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 The ceiling of the Reichstag Dome resembles a filter as it is not solid metal. It has small holes that allow some snow or rain to seep through. The building was so unique and elegant, and the view was amazing (Aliana Purugganan). The view from the top was unmatched (Jon Carlisle). The highlight for me was visiting the former Stasi Interrogation Centre, showing the brutality of the Soviet regime post-war until I was surprised and shocked by the methods used against Enemies of the State (Kira Jinkinson). We saw a memorial to the Berlin Wall at Bernauerstrasse, where a lot of the wall still remains. There is lots of Graffiti on it, some of it depressing. It is interesting how people react to it now (Sam Krula). The concentration camp site at Sachsenhausen, despite being distressing and shocking, was a real eye-opener, an experience I will never forget, along with the fake infirmary and the lengths that the Nazis went to, to cover it up (Emily Warburton). (Mya Plumley-Beere). Our guide told us how her father had been imprisoned there. She told us horrible stories about the treatment of prisoners. Another guide had been imprisoned for attempting to escape to the West, but was ransomed out by West Germany in exchange for 50,000 Euros (Henry Perks). The weather when we were there also impacted on the experience, as the wind, snow and rain made it easier to imagine the conditions the prisoners had to endure It is a place that everyone needs to see some day. It made the history of the holocaust more palpable, seeing it for real. The size of the place shocked me (Antonia Parker). In the museum there was also a list of all those killed. On one double spread there were thousands of names For somewhere that was such a dismal place once, it has so much beauty and was so significant for me as a History student (Livvy Retallack). (Emma Baldwin). CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

5 YEAR 11 STUDENTS VISIT BERLIN CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 Watching the Bundesliga match (Hertha Berlin v Wolfsburg even those who don t follow football still found it great fun (Luke Lewis-Sebastian). The historic nature of the 1936 stadium also interested the History students, as it was mentioned in the Controlled Assessment (Jon Carlisle). I was more than surprised by my transformation into a Hertha fan. I genuinely loved it and was gutted at the final whistle - a 1-1 draw (Charlotte To). The Wolfsburg away fans were very noisy and were not overpowered by the home fans (Ben Lovell-Smith). The Hertha fans were very amusing and fun to watch. The atmosphere was great (Travis Taylor). The atmosphere for our final dinner in the Berlin Hard Rock Café was relaxed and happy. They had on display memorabilia from famous rock stars like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton (Oliver Redick). The original clothes and instruments caught everyone s attention and the food was incredible! (Becky Leigh). I enjoyed seeing all the different sights and all the historical aspects. It really is so different seeing them for real. I just wish it had been a longer stay (Charlotte To).
