Please note the change in usual start time (now 11am) to accommodate this year s inclusion of Charolais females which will sell from 1pm. This sale includes over 120 lots made up of 70 top Charolais and Stabilizer bulls, 40 special release Charolais breeding females, and 16 semen and embryo lots. Our Charolais genetics are kicking goals. Please note feature bull - Lot 1, a Doc Silver son, out of one of our best cows Paringa D140. He is the highest ranked Domestic Index bull to be sold this year, 18 months old and ready to work. The Charolais females are highly ranked and been some of our best breeders. They are a good example of the female strength behind our bulls. These special embryo lots are flushed from the number one ranked female on the Charolais database, Paringa White Gold H372 and offer a rare opportunity to access the cream of the crop. The feature Stabilizer bulls this year are fully imported from Focus Genetics New Zealand. This year s line-up of bulls have bigger breed differences to give you maximum hybrid kick and hence profit, while progeny are still extremely uniform and marketable. As always the cattle have been tested PestiVirus free, are MN3 and Jim Green assessed for structure and temperament. 5 STABILIZER - THE SIMPLE SOLUTION FOR PROFIT The message and results have been around for decades, but difficult to implement in a market driven environment, until now. The Stabilizer model is exciting - capturing the hard to measure traits that drive profit such as fertility, feed efficiency, and longevity with cross breeding. We continue to select the elite sires of the main breeds that will continue to go in to make our Stabilizer animals. In that regard, we are not bound by, or limited to any breed and can change, add and grab traits as needed, when markets or environment change. We are going to need cattle continue to do a lot more on farm and post gate: More fertility Greater feed efficiency High carcase with 70 days on feed More yield with marbling Live longer Tougher & more disease resistant More kg/ha Bigger calves at weaning Easier calving with more growth Tender and leaner Quieter temperament ALL POSSIBLE THROUGH STABILIZER BREEDING POINTS OF INTEREST THAT I SEE AS A CATTLE BREEDER All purebreds are faced with inbreeding suppression which is basically loss of fitness traits (fertility, structure, longevity) meaning one must work harder on management and breeding to maintain those traits. This is why you see for example: Angus have to make cattle fatter (genetically) and feed more to get more, when Stabilizer gives you more fertility with more muscle, with less feed. Pure bred bulls break down more when compared to Stabilizer, as their built in fitness traits make them TOUGHER. They handle bigger workloads and perform well in tougher conditions. Hybrid vigour in Stabilizer is expressed more the tougher it gets! When buying Stabilizer bulls you are not competing with studs buying the elite purebred bulls. But you get Stabilizer bulls that look and breed like $20,000 purebreds. Because Stabilizer don t break down as readily, lacks of credits and refunds keeps average price down Stabilizer progeny should be marketed as such, and not as Angus or Simm/Angus, as the market actually want fertile, high yielding, quiet, highly feed efficient tender steers and heifers that are STABILIZER. Stabilizer with (also known as Multi-Breed ) Tom Lawson One of the most exciting steps in our elite hybrid bull breeding program is the recently released performance recording system, commonly known on the Angus database as Multi Breed Registered (MBR). The Angus Multi-Breed Register (MBR) is a facility provided by the Angus Australia to enable its members to record pedigree and performance information on their non-straightbred Angus seedstock. Full data on our Paringa Stabilizer 2012 drop bulls and females are up and loaded onto the Angus database. Please don t hesitate to discuss any queries you may have as these bulls come up for sale in February The Multi-Breed Register (MBR) was established by Angus Australia in the late 1990 s at the request of members to provide a facility for the recording of their Angus influenced non-straightbred seedstock. In 2011, there were 3,275 calves recorded on the MBR, which represents just over 5% of total number of calves recorded by Angus Australia. Up until 2012, Angus Breedplan for cattle recorded on the MBR were not truly comparable with for straightbred animals. This limited the usefulness of recording animals on the MBR. In early 2012, a full crossbred model was implemented in Angus Breedplan providing the potential to provide more comparable for Angus-influenced crossbred and composite cattle recorded in the MBR. Hence, breeders can now confidently record non-straightbred animals on the MBR with the knowledge that the Angus Breedplan analysis will make appropriate adjustments for breed effects and hybrid vigour. Of course, just like occurs in a straightbred herd, the reliability of the will be influenced by the number of genetic links with other animals recorded on the Angus database from other herds and environments. Provided the MBR cattle have good links with straightbred cattle and other MBR cattle in other performance recorded herds then the for MBR cattle can be considered comparable with straightbred Angus cattle. Further development work is being conducted on the Angus Breedplan system to import genetic values for non-angus immigrant animals into the crossbred analysis. This should be completed by the end of 2012 and will further improve the reliability of on MBR cattle. The MBR now provides an important facility to members for the genetic improvement and marketing of Angus influenced crossbred and composite seedstock. It is anticipated that the use of the MBR will grow substantially in future years as breeders of these cattle realise the benefits of objective performance based improvement, just has been achieved with great success for many years by breeders of straightbred Angus cattle. 6 How Paringa Can Guarantee a Great Product Data - Breed Right All calves weighed at birth are within a tight contemporary group. This starts at conception with careful planning with link AI sires to ensure good linkage for data. We calve at 2 years of age with no excuses. Any female PTIC empty after 8 week joining is culled. All 200, 400, 600, Scrotal and scanning (for EMA, Fat, Marbling) is done and submitted to the relevant Breed Society. No contemporary is split until all data is submitted. Thus no cull or tops pulled out. It s all about data integrity! Worked hard with the Angus Society to get our Stabilizer data loaded onto the Angus Multi-breed Register (MBR). Now we can provide more meaningful data that is comparable to the Angus data. Health - ready to go This year the Pfizer STAR Program has been adopted along with our usual health programs. The Pfizer STAR Program is a quality assurance program for stud bulls to protect them from transmitting reproductive diseases. It involves testing for PestiVirus by taking an ear notch sample, vaccinating twice with Pestiguard, 7 in 1 and Vibrovax. All bulls have been ear notched and tested PestiVirus free Vaccinated - 7 in 1, Vibrovax and Pestiguard 12/09/13. Nutrition Bulls have been early weaned and fed 30 days rumen development using ELMS. Beef Class Structural Assessment Paringa works hard to select and manage bulls to maximize structural soundness and longevity. We are working with Jim Green to independently assess bulls for customers needs. Data has been included in the catalogue lot information. Comments We try to give meaningful comments on the bulls as we work with them as individuals and the dams most days. Our data on the bulls is excellent as it truly represents what the bull looks like visually. What the words mean from a genetic point Powerful: Very high growth animals with high muscle conformation Good Temperament: Relative to their group they are extremely docile with kind eyes. Easy Doing: They have good fat cover not only on the scan data but look fatter which is important for finishing on grass at high stocking rates or short fed programs. It also helps with enhancing eating quality. Marbling (IMF%): You notice we talk a lot about marbling because we know it is essential to have a modest amount of marbling to guarantee eating quality. We are not chasing high visual scores but a minimum amount to guarantee MSA. Fertility Fertility is a funny thing! The ability of breeding females to get in calf at 2yo and rebreed every year for at least 6 years at a 365 day interval is a combination of many measureable traits that must be balanced to be successful and still produce progeny that are highly efficient and marketable. No one trait is more important than another. That is why we can still see highly negative bulls on scrotal or leanness that are still extremely fertile. In these cases, if they are they are generally very moderate, low milk and too fat, for example. In purebreds we need balance of cost traits such as milk and mature cow weight, with major economic production traits growth and carcase. In other words we need females that are highly fertile and highly productive with highly efficient progeny. This is the Holy Grail. This can be only achieved successfully with cross bred females and bulls, north or south. Cross bred females are more fertile and productive, this is why every research report benchmark paper etc and every other Livestock Industry has planned crossbreeding programs because they produce MORE from LESS! 7 Notice to Buyers All lots will be sold subject to the terms and conditions governing Victorian auction sales. Terms & conditions of this sale will be displayed on sale day. All bulls are guaranteed fertile and sound under our 1 Year Bull Guarantee as listed in this catalogue. Property Identification Code (PIC) and Registration Transfer of bulls should be notified in writing on the Buyer Delivery Instruction form. Bulls will be transferred at no cost. There is no obligation for commercial buyers to transfer animals. If you require registration transfer, please provide Angus Australia herd prefix. Rebate of 2% is available to outside agents settling on behalf of buyers within 7 days. Introductions must be in writing 24 hours prior to Sale. 1. provide you with a satisfactory replacement if available, or 2. issue you with a credit equal to purchase price minus salvage value that may be used to purchase any animal in future Paringa sales. This is not a life insurance policy. Normal care needs to be taken as we cannot replace an animal that is injured or dies for any reason. We recommend you insure animals against injury. This guarantee is in addition to normal terms and conditions governing auction sales, and as such the vendors decision will be final. In some cases buyers may be requested to supply a veterinary report. Delivery We take personal interest in the speedy delivery of all stock after the Sale. All due care is taken during the transit period of animals purchased. However buyers are responsible for the insurance of animals against injury or death from the fall of the hammer. Insurance is available on the day or buyers may make prior arrangements with their own insurer. Buyers must also fill in the Elders Delivery form with delivery and transfer instructions. Buyers wishing express delivery of their purchases are encouraged to arrange their own carriers. Please Note: Bulls available for transport after conclusion of the Sale, no transport permitted during auction. Purchasers are responsible for transport costs. Bull Guarantee All breeding cattle sold by Paringa are fertile and structurally sound to the best of our knowledge. All bulls have passed a semen test and reproductive examination. If a bull becomes infertile or breaks down due to reasons other than injury or misadventure, at any time in the next 12 months, we will: Paringa 2014 Sale - 7

8 Fertility Testing Bulls This year s Sale bulls have been semen tested by Impact Genetics. Semen testing is costly, however, we feel it will provide a number of benefits over the Serving Ability Test (SAT), including: l Disease Due to the large mob sizes that we run we have found that the SAT promotes homosexual activity which can spread diseases, cause unnecessary injury and also lead to outbreaks of penile warts. l Humane Animal Handling The SAT regardless of how well it is run can lead to injury to females, and unnecessary stress to the animals and operators. l Repeatability SAT tests have shown to have low repeatability. As bulls get more experience they become more active and the pecking order between bulls also has a large bearing on the results. l Research & Experience Research has shown that the higher serving bulls can cause more problems as they are usually the most aggressive (eg. fence-jumpers). This more aggressive behaviour can also prevent other bulls from serving. Such a scenario causes the bulls semen quality production to be limited which can prevent successful conceptions occurring in multiple sire groups. Serving ability testing research has shown that it is not an indication of potential conception rate but more an indication that the bull is sound and capable of serving rather than ranking bulls for high or low libido. Our own practical experience with the serving test involving thousands of bulls has led us to question its use. We have not taken this decision lightly and have consulted widely. We would not have taken this step if it was not in your interest. Semen testing has been shown to be a better indicator of conception rate or calf output. Semen testing does pick up any abnormalities of the penis. Most research results pertaining to calf output confirmed that semen examination including sperm morphology should be standard procedure when assessing bulls for reproductive soundness. Systematic physical and reproductive examinations should be routine with herd bulls prior to joining as this will eliminate poor contributions to calf output in single and multiple sire joinings. We have more confidence in selling you a structurally sound semen tested bull than a structurally sound serving ability tested bull. It has been our experience that producers have observed their bull serving, but do they know if the bull is producing viable and fertile semen? Identifying the Super Bull Calf-Getter! Reproductive efficiency in beef herds is critical in maximising net profit. However, identifying super high fertility bulls and females is difficult. The most practical way to optimise reproductive efficiency is to identify acceptable thresholds and eliminate animals that fail these criteria. Selection thresholds include: Bulls l Scrotal Size (>30 at 15 months; 33 at 18 months) l Soundness (ability to serve) l >70% sperm motility l Normal Penis Females l Culled if not in calf in 8-10 weeks l Soundness l Teeth l Body condition By setting tight parameters on bulls and females, and by buying bulls from a breeding program, rather than a feeding program, you will insure maximum calf output over the first three weeks. Many thanks to Dr Peter Honey, Snowy River Clinic, for his help in researching this important area. We recommend people try and check bulls during mating period and replace any injured or suspect bull immediately. Suggestions As the bulls have not undergone Serving Ability Testing it is suggested that you observe the bulls closely to make certain they are serving. It is also good practice to rotate bulls and spell bulls regularly if they have a high workload as sperm quality drops off over a 21 day period. During our experience with Serving Ability Testing we have only culled less than 1% of the bulls tested. It has been a very rare occasion that bulls will not service cycling females. If you are unhappy with the serving ability of your bull we will replace him with the next best bull to your liking. The bulls have all undergone rigorous physical examinations for structure and fertility, so they should be capable of serving. 8 - Paringa 2014 Sale

9 PARINGA - JOHNES & PESTIVIRUS FREE Paringa Livestock takes a modern approach to assuring the quality of cattle produced. Several programmes have been implemented to minimise the risk of some major diseases which are vital to maintaining herd health and in turn maximising profit. Standard practices of parasite control and vaccination for Clostridial Diseases (7 in 1) are actively carried out. Paringa is also testing for Pestivirus (also known as Bovine Viral Diarrhoea or Mucosal Disease) and is actively involved in the MAP ( Market Assurance Programme) for BJD. (Bovine Johnes Disease). Both these diseases can cause losses in herds into which they are introduced, in the form of stock losses and financial losses. By minimising the risk of these diseases by actively pursuing testing & control programmes, the risk of these diseases being transferred to other properties is also drastically reduced. This will protect other herds from being exposed to these diseases, adding value to the sale animals. Pestivirus is a well known cause of production losses which can be seen in the form of abortion, stillbirths, infertility, stunted/deformed calves or illness from secondary infections. Adult animals infected with Pestivirus may get a fever, scour or show minimal signs. The main risk is when pregnant cows or heifers not previously exposed to the virus become infected. Several possibilities may occur if this happens, from a decrease in conception rate as the cattle will abort early, or may be seen as an abortion storm. If the calf of the cow/heifer infected in early pregnancy survives full term, it may be born dead, or it may survive as a Persistently Infected animal (PI). These PI calves can survive and look abnormal and not thrive or may look just like the other calves. During their lifetime, these PI animals shed huge amounts of Pestivirus to other animals, and perpetuate the infection and production losses. Sometimes Mucosal Disease may develop if a PI calf is infected with another strain of pestivirus. Pestivirus is often a silent or unrecognised problem in the herd, sometimes being seen as the occasional stillborn or a sick or poorly growing calf. However, even the silent problem can be cause ongoing serious financial losses due to decreased reproductive performance and can be devastating if it occurs on a large scale. Paringa Livestock tests sale animals to ensure that they are not PI. By ensuring a non-pi animal for sale, Paringa protects other herds from the issues discussed above. All sale stock are also vaccinated with Pestigard, a Pfizer product to protect from infection by other stock. Paringa Livestock is an MN3 property. This is a level of accreditation associated with a very low risk of having Johnes Disease on a property. Johnes Disease is a bacterial infection seen clinically as chronic weight loss and scouring/diarrhoea in older cattle. It can cause stock and financial losses and is a notifiable disease if detected in cattle. There is no vaccination or prevention available to protect from Johnes Disease, so it is important to minimise the risk in other ways. This is how the MAP ( Market Assurance Programme ) works. 58 TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR THE SALE OF STUD STOCK BY AUCTION 1. All bids at auction or offers to purchase are made on and are subject to these terms and conditions of sale (these terms) and bidders agree to abide by and acknowledge that they will be bound by these terms. 2. (a) The Vendor reserves the right to bid by agent or in person and may withdraw any lot or lots without declaring the reserve, and subject to Clause 9 the higher bidder will be the Purchaser but the Selling Agent without giving any reason whatsoever may refuse to accept the bidding of any person. (b) The Selling Agent or auctioneer may settle any disputed bid or put up the stock again at the last undisputed bid and may settle any dispute over minimum bids. (c) The auctioneer may refuse to accept any bid which the auctioneer believes is not in the best interest of the Vendor and may do so without giving any reason. (d) A bidder will be deemed to be a principal unless prior to bidding the bidder has given to the auctioneer a written authority to bid for another person. 3. The stock will be in all respects at the risk and expenses of the Purchaser immediately on the fall of the hammer or in the case of a private treaty, immediately upon acceptance by the Vendor of the Purchaser s offer to purchase the stock. 4. (a) On conclusion of the sale and before delivery the Purchaser must pay for all stock purchased immediately in cash. The Selling Agent may require any bidder before or during a sale, to deposit with the Selling Agent, an amount on account of the purchase price. (b) If delivery is given or possession is obtained by or for the Purchaser before payment, the stock will remain the property of the Vendor and the Purchaser will hold the stock as trustee for the Vendor, but at the risk of the Purchaser until payment of the purchase price in full and clearance of all negotiable instruments comprising any part of the purchase price. (c) At any time before payment of the purchase price in full, the Vendor or the Vendor s agent may recover possession of the stock and may come on to any lands occupied by the Purchaser to do so or to inspect the stock at anytime and may sue the Purchaser to recover possession of the stock. 5. (a) The Purchaser acknowledges that the stock for sale has been available for inspection before that sale and the Purchaser is deemed to have inspected the stock to the Purchaser s satisfaction. (b) The stock are sold subject to any existing faults whether or not such faults are discoverable by Inspection. All conditions and warranties in respect of the stock which might otherwise be implied by law are to the extent permissible by law expressly excluded. (c) The Purchaser acknowledges that no representation expressed or implied has been made by the Vendor, the Vendor s agent or the Selling Agent as to the condition of the stock sold. If any breach of a conditions or warranty implied by law arises the Vendor has the option, to the extent permitted by law, to replace the stock with similar stock, improve the stock or refund payment of the stock. The Selling Agent will not be liable for any deficiencies in numbers of any lots sold. (d) The Selling Agent gives no warranty as to the Vendor s right to sell and is not liable in respect of any error or omission in the description or pedigree, and the Purchaser will not be entitled to void the sale, reject the stock or claim any compensation, damage or reduction in the price owing to any such misdescriptions. 6. Any representation made by the Vendor or Selling Agent, that any female has been pregnancy tested in calf means only that a certificate in writing will be supplied to the Purchaser, signed by a qualified veterinary surgeon certifying that the female has been pregnancy tested on a date specified on the certificate and that in the veterinary surgeon s opinion the female was in calf on that date. If the opinion is incorrect neither the Vendor or the Selling Agent will be liable to the Purchaser. 7. Subject to any clerical errors the prices recorded in the sale book by the Selling Agent s clerk will be binding on the Purchaser and the Vendor. 8. The Purchaser must consult the Vendor in relation to pedigree certificates and transfers and acknowledges that it is not the Selling Agent s responsibility to acquire these on behalf of the Purchaser. The Vendor will notify the society or association for the relevant breed of the Purchaser s details if stock sold is pedigree stock. The Purchaser is responsible for paying the appropriate transfer and registration fees associated with any registration of all stock sold. 9. If the Purchaser does not comply with any of these conditions any stock purchased may without notice to the Purchaser, be resold as determined by the Selling Agent, at the risk of the Purchaser, and any short fall arising from such sale must be paid by the Purchaser. The Purchaser is not entitled to any profit arising from such sale. 10. Interest will accrue and be payable by the Purchaser on any part of the purchase price not paid immediately on conclusion of a sale or as agreed and on any fees and charges incurred by the Vendor or the Selling Agent. Interest will accrue at the rate of 2% higher than the rate set out in the Penalty Interest Rates Act Notices. Any notices, invoices, demands or approvals (notices) required to be made in writing or authorised will be duly made if given in person, by post, by facsimile, telegram or and will be deemed to have been served:- (a) if made in person at the time of such service; or (b) in the case of per-paid ordinary post, when it would be received in the ordinary course of post whether in fact received or not; or (c) in the case of facsimile transmission, at the end of the transmission as recorded by the sender. In the case of (b) or (c) notices must be sent to the address or facsimile number of the respective party which is recorded in the sale book or at such other address or number as the addressee may advise. 12.
