EXHIBITIONS 2013 KUNSTHISTORISCHES MUSEUM WIEN
EXHIBITIONS AT THE KUNSTHISTORISCHES MUSEUM VIENNA GIZA In the Shadow of the Pyramids January 22 - May 20, 2013 In January 1912 an Austrian excavation team began to uncover the first mastaba tombs near the Pyramids of Giza. The campaigns brought to light numerouss artworks and objects documenting the cultural history of the Old Kingdom (c BC) as well as seminal s information about the tombs of the ancient Egyptians and their ideas i about the afterlife. The focal artwork in the exhibition is the life-size statue of Hemiunu, the architect of the t Pyramid of Khufu. Vienna s rich holdings are augmented by important loans from European and American museums. The exhibition offers insights into the civilizationn of ancient Egypt, and documents Austria s seminal role in researching the Old Kingdom. In connection with the show a digital presentation was developed in collaboration with the Technical University of Vienna that invites you on a digital journey through time to visit the Giza plateau during the Old Kingdom, and the Austrian excavators a century ago.
THE REOPEING OF THE KUNSTKA AMMER WIEN February 28, 2013 The countdown has begun: closed for a decade, the world s most importantt Kunstkammer will reopen on February 28, 2013 after extensive building work has been completed. The newly-installed Kunstkammerr of the Kunsthistorisches Museumm Wien forms a seminal part of Europe s patrimony, and its reopening is one of Austria s foremost culturall projects. Emperors and princes loved to collect all that was rare, curious and unusual, and artists created virtuoso objets d art for their Kunstkammer collections. Among thee highlights of the collection in Vienna are Benvenuto Cellini s celebrated Saliera, important sculptures like l the Krumauu Madonna, magnificent bronze statuettes, delicate and bizarre b ivoryy carvings and sumptuous vessels cut from semi-precious stones, as well as magnificent clocks, complex automatons, state-of-the-art scientific instruments and much, much more. Twenty newly-installed galleries coveringg m2 showcase this t unique collection. Save the date: March 27, 2013 The press conference marking the opening of the Kunstkammerr Wien is scheduled forr 10 am on March 27, 2013 in the Cupola Hall of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien. You are cordially invited to attend; RSVP to presse@khm.at.
INTERMEZZO 05 The Other Half (Art) Histories of Couples June 18 September 8, 2013 Gods, siblings, rulers or members of the bourgeoisie images of o couples are everywhere. Documenting real or hoped-for affinity, they were devised for a wealth of different locations or settings. The exhibition also looks at who commissioned them, and at the similarities and differences we can deduce from the depictions of couples from various v periods and cultures. And, last but not least, we focus on some of the famous couples of classicalal antiquity and the Modern Era, whose stories inspired the imagination of numerous artists. The exhibition is the fifth in our INTERMEZZO series in whichh the KHM in addition to its regular blockbuster shows showcases a selection of artworks from f its own collections in a single gallery to create a stimulating dialogue. Thesee exhibitions are curated by a team of in- house curators.

MODERN & CONTEMPORARY ART ATT THE KUNSTHISTORISCHES MUSEUM WIEN LUCIAN FREUD October 8, January 6, 2014 On October 8, 2013, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, will open the first exhibition of Lucian Freud s paintings ever to have been presented in Austria. The exhibition was prepared with the close personal involvement of the artist during the months and weeks prior to his death in July 2011, and is thus the final exhibition conceived by Freud himself. It will present works from more than 70 yearss of his career. The idea for the exhibition is to t bring together, for the first time, the paintings which Freud himself consideredd to be his greatest achievements: Freud s masterpieces, chosen by Freud himself. The paintings to be presented in Vienna include many of his most famous images: self- portraits, portraits of his family, and artists such as Francis Bacon, and alsoo landscapess and still lives. At the same time the show focuses on Freud s relationship with Old Masters and Ancient Egyptian art. The paintings for the Vienna exhibition will be borrowed from some s of thee world s most important museums, such as Tate Modern, London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington D.C., and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid.. In addition, there willl be a number of important loans from f private collectors and former patrons of Freud. In connection with the exhibition the museum will offer an extensive programme of events including lectures, films, guided tours andd much more. Scheduled to run concurrently with the exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, the Freud Museum in Vienna will present an exhibition of photographs by Freud s long-standing assistant, David Dawson, entitled Lucian Freud: Privat.
ARTISTS TALKS 2013 The series of monthly talks by or discussions with artists organized in connections with the exhibition programme of the Kunsthistori isches Museum Wien in i 2012 willl continue in Important international and Austrian artists, museumm curators and critics talk about their own work and projects, as well as about their relationship with the historical collections of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien. Upcoming talk: Tuesday, January 22, 2013: Hope Kingsley Curator r of the exhibition Seduced by Art: Photography Past and Present,, currently on display at The National Gallery, London The next events are scheduledd for March,, May, September and November, N and will be announced on our website
MODERN & CONTEMPORARY ART ATT THE KUNSTHISTORISCHES MUSEUM WIEN EXHIBITIONS AT THE THESEUS TEMPLE WIEN RICHARD WRIGHT April 18 - September 30, 2013 The programme of single-work exhibitions in the Theseus Temple, which began so successfully in 2012 with more than 90,000 visitors to the presentations of Ugo Rondinone and Kris Martin, will continue in We are delighted to announce that the British artist Richard Wright will create a site-specific work for the Theseus Temple. Wright, who was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize in 2009, will work daily with a team off assistants for more than a month to produce an intricate and unique work directly on the interior wallss of the building. Working primarily with paint and gold leaf, Wright s paintings are often short-lived, only surviving the length of an exhibition, before they are painted over. This serves to heighten the senses of the viewer in the knowledge that the work may not be viewable again, in any other place, at any other time.
EXHIBITION IN THE COLLECTION OFF ARMS AND ARMOUR / NEUE BURG THE IMPERIAL HUNT Princely Hunts in the Renaissance From March 2013 The opening of the newly-installed imperial Jagdkammer in the permanent galleries of the Collection of Arms and Armour focuses on a seminal part of princely pompp and circumstance. The collection of hunting paraphernalia and guns is newly installed in a splendid gallery in the Corps de Logis of Neue Burg Palace. This magnificent location provides a fitting setting for over 90 objects connected with hunting ass the sport of princes during d the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The golden aviary that housed the precious falcons and the lavishly embroidered falcon lures form the focus of the newly-installed gallery. Vienna houses thee world s largest collection of courtly equipment for hunting with falcons. This new installation now showcases a large part of this exquisite collection.
EXHIBITIONS IN THE IMPERIAL CARRIAGE MUSEUM / SCHÖNBRUNN WINTER CLOTHES With Horse and Carriage through Ice and Snow November April 2014 Ensconced in a pre-heated car, its engine topped up with anti-freeze and running smoothly, we hardly notice the freezing temperaturet es outside when drivingg along wintry roads. But during the age of the carriage travelling in winter was a lot less l comfortable. But even then there were numerous ways to protectt carriages, travelers and the all-important horse power against the cold. Theree were sumptuous winter clothes for coach horses, worn underneath the actual harness to keep the precious animals warmm even in below-zero temperatures. Perpetually exposed to the elements on their coach box, coachmen wore thick fur coats and felt boots, while specially upholstered carriages helped keep the passengers snug and warm. Princely coachmen and horsess driving through townss in winter were therefore often better protected against freezing f temperatures than many a passer-by wearing nothing but a thin coat and ordinary shoes. From October 2013, the Imperial Carriage Museum in Schönbrunn looks at this so-farr ignored subject and showcases Winter Clothes for horses, people and carriages, all of whichh were once a common sight on the streets of Vienna during the winter months. Most exhibitss come from our own holdings and will be on show for the first time in over a century.
EXHIBITIONS AT AMBRAS CASTLE INNSBRUCK THE STRASSER COLLECTION OF GLASS From March 22, 2013 The collection assembled by Professor Rudolf Strasser is one off the most important collections of glasss in Europe. Now permanently displayed at Ambras A Castle, it comprises precious examples of glass from the Renaissance and the Baroque producedd in Europe s leading centres of glassmakingg - Venice, Bohemia, Hall in Tyrol, Innsbruckk and Silesia - and documents the difficult and time-consuming technique of producing and decorating glass. CHIVALRY. DREAM AND REALITY June 6 - September 8, 2013 The age of chivalry and of knights who left the court to seek outt adventuress before returning in triumph was probably always a dream, although a highly-influential one. Both Emperor Maximilian I and his grand-son Archdukee Ferdinandd II were fired up by these ideals. The latter collected both tales of his grandfather s chivalry and arms and armour to bring this dream to life which is also the focus of this exhibition. COUNTER WORLDS September 27 - November 1, 2013 For the exhibition Counter Worlds Artistic Seismography around 35 living artists will develop, comment and question the subject of counter worlds. Most of these works will be on show in the special exhibition galleries inn the Upper Palace at Ambras A Castle. Some of the works, however, will be created in situ and focus on the palace s specific situation or one of its rooms, i.e. the Kunst- und Wunderkam mmer, the Portrait Gallery, the Grotto of Bacchus, the Bath and the inner courtyard of the Upperr Palace. The Kunsthistorisches Museum is collaborating with the Stiftung Universität Hildesheim and the Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck. Directors: Christoph Bertsch, Viola Vahrson A GUEST AT AMBRAS 03 October 2 - November 1, 2013 For a month, a celebrated masterpiece from the collections of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna will be showcased at Ambras. Thee identity of the guest remains r a surprise!
