It s July and that means it s time to sign up for a workshop. With four outstanding artists coming in for the 2014/2015 SAWG year, these classes are sure to fill early. Sept. 1, registration goes out to non-members of SAWG. Have you wanted to master the technique of painting expressive figures, birds and animals? Check out Bev Jozwiak s amazing gallery on her website. She ll be here in Nov. to share tips on color mixing skin tones, glowing whites and rich blacks as well as the use of strong values and working with photos. In January, Jeannie McGuire will share her insights into intuitive painting with impact and emotion. She brings a background of graphic design and photography to her unique and striking figurative work. This class promises to be full of inspiring ideas that will change your art and how you approach it. Back by popular demand, Carol Carter is here in February. Watching her demos of rich, fluid washes, brilliant pure color and tricks on controlling water will be as much fun as hearing her ideas on marketing and the use of social media to show your work. Her successful studio/storefront gallery is in St. Louis. You will be awed by her use of color, themes and the emotional expression in her work. Also returning to SAWG is Helga Flower. She has been inspiring her students for over 40 years with her loose and imaginative landscapes, florals and abstracts with mixed media. Not only is her art from a place of emotion and authenticity, Helga has written a moving autobiography, Warchild that describes her life as a child during World War II and it s aftermath. We re happy to have Helga back in Tucson in March. Don t wait too long to register for a workshop with one or more of these impressive artists. Registration can be done on the SAWG website or by picking up a form at the gallery and mailing a check. UNDER CONSTRUCTION Welcome to our first on-line only Sketchbook! 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT GALLERY NEWS Greetings from our web site world! I m hopeful that you found this Sketchbook and if you haven t been an online reader before, that you ll find it just as easy to access and read as the print version has been. Lest you think we ve all taken a vacation from our SAWG responsibilities, let me assure you that we ve been busy as bees planning, evaluating, focusing, contemplating, well you get the point. Because you ve received two s within the past month, you are probably aware of our financial needs, so I won t belabor that. However, the appeal for dues to be paid is sincere. If you are in doubt, don t hesitate to contact me or Carolyn to check the records. We ll be happy to do so. My other appeal is to prepare for show entries. The calendar of shows is in close proximity to this Sketchbook, so take a look and start planning. It seems that once September hits, the pace quickens in all of our daily lives, often stealing painting time. So, pick up those brushes and get busy. By the way, I just finished my 5th painting using mostly my #10 round! Yea! WOW continues to dominate our attention at the gallery in the summer, with new hostess Peggy Wilmore supervising the shows. Once again, there has been a remarkable variety of artistic endeavors, not limited to our traditional gallery holdings, resulting in a most colorful presentation. Make sure you read about these shows elsewhere in the Sketchbook. Workshops are coming and it s time to consider signing up! Members are able to sign up July 15th, and there s no doubt that this year s four artists will be stand-outs. Details can be found in this very issue, so check out that article and start making plans! A down payment is all it takes to hold your space. As I mentioned above, the list of shows to enter is available right here in the newsletter and (as always) on the web site, and the very first one is our beloved FIESTA SONORA, long regarded as a wonderfully artistic vision of our locale. Hop to that article to learn all the details you need for entering. And, as I ve mentioned before, if you re new to entering shows, and feel awkward about the process OR your artwork, please give a shout. I d be happy to find you a mentoring buddy. Last, but certainly not least, our new location at the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple is in the throws of wonderful new remodeling. Several of us went recently to iron out our meeting details, and every visit makes us feel more secure in the decision we made to try this venue for a year. YES, it s downtown, and YES, we realize that makes many of you feel insecure, but PLEASE trust that we are planning to do everything in our power to make you happy campers. Our meeting dates are elsewhere in this issue, and it might be a good idea to mark your calendars now. In the weeks preceding our first meeting, September 15th, we will be sending out all kinds of pertinent information about car-pooling, parking areas, etc., so be sure to watch for that. In this, our inaugural online-only Sketchbook, we ve made every attempt to connect with you, our membership, in such a way that you feel the familiarity of the SAWG many of you have known for years. If you have any suggestions for improving our communication with you, we re happy to receive your ideas. The new Sketchbook and the new meeting location are major items to change in one year. We hope we ve handled them well for you and extend endless thanks for your support. Jenny Clark Remember - To submit any articles for the Sketchbook to Debra Irons at d_irons@cox.net. Deadline is always the 15th of each month. What Happens Next? On July 1, after the WOW #2 show is over, the gallery will be professionally painted. Then the Needlepoint Show opens on Monday, July 7. Stop by and see the transformation! That show will run for two weeks, and then on Monday, July 22nd, we will open WOW #3 along with our new gift shop and permanent classroom! If you d like to participate in any of these happenings, please contact Peggy Wilmore for the WOW or Judy Constantine for the rest. If you want to help SAWG increase visitors to the gallery (and hopefully customers), the flyer that is available for each show to all your friends, asking them to it to all their friends to help us out. Send it to your book club members, mahjong group, garden club, etc. aksing them to send it on. Put it on your facebook page and on your website. Send it to people in your Homeowners Association, ask to have it put on their facebook page or in their newsletter. People are always looking for things to do. The more people we contact with info on our shows, the more likely we are to get new visitors, and you know what that means, more sales, maybe even for you! 3 SHOW NEWS WOW #2 wraps up! We had a nice show for the second WOW of the summer, with new artists and different mediums: masks, Anasazi shard paintings, glasswork, jewelry, and of course fine watercolors and acrylics for any discerning collector! Mary Kramer and Judy Constantine brought selected paintings from the SAWG collection out of storage to hang on the walls that weren t rented. Some of them were just in mats, so Mary Kramer framed them, priced them, and we offered them for sale. I hope you had a chance to see this show! Judy Peterson deserves a big thank you for running the receptions! They weren t as crowded as some as our regular SAWG show receptions, but they were well-attended, lively, and offered a good chance to chat with friends and visitors and check out all the amazing artwork! Thanks also to Peggy Wilmore for taking the reservations for wall rentals, and to Harpist Vesna who entertained us with subtle and wonderful music all night for the first WOW reception. Judy Constantine, VP of Shows On this month s masthead, we are recognizing Juried member Eulalie Brown s painting, Edge from the 2014 Annual Show. Celebrate! SAWG Show Schedule $ Clip and SAVE! 4 MORE SHOW NEWS Fiesta Sonora Show - October 14 - November 9 Here s something to get your painting juices flowing this summer: think about the Fiesta Sonora Show! The first SAWG show of the season, it will be co-chaired by new SAWG Show Chairs Karen Richert and Karen Guss (thank you ladies!) and juried by Linda M. Feltner AFC, SAA (a Signature Member of both Artists for Conservation and Society of Animal Artists.) This show has a very specific theme -- aspects of the Sonoran Desert region -- yet covers an extremely broad and diverse geographical area. The region reaches west across the southern tip of California through some of the Imperial Valley to El Centro and Indio. It extends up the Colorado River from Yuma to Needles. To the north, Sonora stops at the Mogollon Rim; on the east it goes to the base of the White Mountains and just east of Tucson. To the south it goes to Tubac, cutting sharply down into Mexico along the western portion of the State of Sonora, including Puerto Penasco, Kino Bay, Hermosillo and Guaymas. It also includes most of Baja. This land is filled with characteristic flora, fauna, landforms, objects, weather, architecture and people, all of which can be fodder for your Fiesta Sonora paintings. For a map of the Sonoran Desert, see: The entry deadline for this show is Friday, September 12, The show dates are October 14 through November 9. See the website for a complete listing of all the upcoming SAWG shows. The entry form for the show can be found on our website on the Shows page. Have a wonderful summer! Happy painting! submitted by Judy Constantine Entering a SAWG Show Are you thinking about entering a SAWG show? What do you do first? We hope to simplify the process for you and encourage you to paint, so you build confidence in yourself and your art, and support the SAWG gallery! You may want to print this article for easy reference. Important First Steps: Before you submit your entry two things to do 1. Check out our website: southernazwatercolorguild.com It is your go-to place for up-to-date information on all SAWG happenings! No computer? Visit the library, or a friend with a computer, or stop by the gallery to pick up printed information. And feel free to call any board member and ask them to print and mail you any forms you need. 2. Review the SAWG Show Schedule. There are eight shows planned for the year; three Reminder! DEADLINE AWA FALL SHOW AUG. 14 azwatercolor.com of them are Signature Point shows. That means if your painting is accepted into a point show, you will receive one point. It takes two points to achieve Juried membership status and five additional points to achieve Signature member status. SAWG also offers a Saguaro Fellow status; contact Deanna Thibault for the current status of this level of membership. Signature Point Shows include: Fiesta Sonora Show, the Calendar Show, and the Annual Show. Currently, you may also receive a point for acceptance into the Arizona Aqueous show held in Tubac, the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies show, and the Arizona Watercolor Association (AWA) show held in Phoenix. Watch the website for details as they become available. Additional SAWG Shows: Holiday Show, Signature Members Show, Picturas Chiquitas (Little Pictures) at La Pilita Museum, Experimental Show, and the All Members Show. Check the website for a complete listing of all the show details, at: southernazwatercolorguild.com/shows. Entering a Show: Mailing an Entry Form (with a check), and ing your JPG. The Entry Form: On the Shows page, you will find Entry Forms for upcoming shows, as well as the SAWG Show Policy. Check the show details and read the policy carefully and print it out for future reference. If you have questions, contact the VP for Shows or the Show Chair(s). For the show you wish to enter: download, print, complete, sign and mail the Entry Form to the address specified on the form, along with your check ($25 for one entry, $35 for two entries.) For juried shows, you will be notified whether or not you are accepted via , so please provide either your or that of a friend. (Be sure to add the Show Chairs addresses to your address book, or remember to check your spam file after the notification date.) The size refers to the framed size, or finished size if unframed, given in inches. The SAWG Show Policy must be adhered to. By signing the Entry Form you are agreeing to abide by the show policies. (See the complete SAWG Show Policy dated 6/15/14 on the website under SHOWS ) Note that there may be variances to some of these rules for some shows; they will be in the Entry Form for the specific show. The JPG: Under the Resources tab on the Shows page, there are instructions on how to prepare a JPG file from a photo of your work and other helpful information. (Quick requirements: 300 dpi, and 1800 pixels or 6 inches on the longest side.) (Neither the Holiday Show nor the Picturas Chiquitas require JPGs.) One word of caution here: once you your JPG, STOP PAINTING ON YOUR PICTURE! Go frame it, or glaze it whatever it is you do. At the check-in for the show, your artwork will be compared to the image you submitted, and they must match. That s pretty much it just do your research and submit your entries. Happy Painting! Hope to see your beautiful art in many of our SAWG shows! submitted by Monica Hart, Judy Peterson, and Judy Constantine

5 MORE GALLERY NEWS SAWG Teachers As you know, the East Gallery will be outfitted as a classroom for you to use after Monday, July 21, Tables, seating 6 students, will be left up, so that you will NOT have to set them up and take them down with each class. You may hold a class there any day, not just Mondays. Have a 2-day class, a once-a-week class, a 4-day class, an all-day class, a half-day class, or any combination of these. You pick how many hours, the subject you will teach and what days. The lighting in the classroom has been improved, so we think you will enjoy working with your small class there. As we said in the Changes e-blast, there will be no rent for the room, we just ask for a commission of 25% of whatever you charge the students for a series of classes. There is a Teachers Sign-Up Calendar behind the desk, so that you can check which dates you d like. Sign up on your choice of dates. Then make a little flyer on one sheet of paper to tell what the class is about and put it into the Teachers Advertising rack by the business cards. You don t have to teach a painting class, you can teach any skill related to art. I am teaching four half-day classes on reducing framing costs in October, and another four classes in January about how to rescue failed paintings. I asked that people sign up on the back of those flyers. We will keep a list of the classes available, too, so people coming to the Gallery can see what is offered. If you have questions, call or Mary Kramer, , mimahk@gmail.com for more information. SAWG Students If you read the blast above, you may be wondering what teachers will teach, when, how much, etc. You can find out by regularly checking the Teacher Advertising rack near the artists business cards in the Gallery. Or, you can call some of your favorite teachers and ask for classes you want to take. You could get some friends together and approach one of our teachers about what you d like to learn. Maybe they will know others who want to learn the same thing, and viola! you have a class! When your class begins, please take off the protective table cloths, and go to work. We ask that you clean the tables after each class and put the table cloths back on. submitted by Mary Kramer Members showing at the Gift Shop As you read in the Changes e-blast, we are starting a small Gift Shop, along the back wall of the East Gallery. We recently purchased some gondola type shelves for that purpose. The numbered shelves are 30 wide, 25 deep, and about 12 tall. They will be rented on a first come, first serve basis for $30 per show. There will be a waiting list for those who want to get in the next rental period, and those vacating the shelves after one month can go back on the waiting list. In that way, we hope to accommodate as many members as want to participate in the Gift Shop, so sign up for a shelf for the show, then sign up on the waiting list. You saw a list of items that might be featured in the Gift Shop section of the Changes e-blast, but you may think of other work. In that event, please talk to Judy Constantine (for now) to see if your item is appropriate. If you need a way to display work on your shelf, Tucson Store Fixtures and Supplies, 500 W. Grant, has a variety of display pieces available. Kelly Paper Store, 232 W. Grant, has many kinds of small bags and plastic boxes they can help you with. If you want to get some things printed with an image of one of your paintings, call a screen printing place to see if they can print what you want (you might want to call several to compare prices.) Office Max, Staples and Office Depot all have tags and stickers with which to mark your items, so we can pay the right person. Mark them with your shelf number, first 4 letters of your last name, and the item number on your inventory list. Example: 3kram14 means shelf #3, Mary Kramer, #14 item on her inventory list. (That way, if a customer puts a piece back on the wrong shelf, the right person will still be paid when it s sold.) Yes, there is an inventory list for you on the website and some in the Gallery. Sales will be handled by the docents in the same way that paintings, bin work and cards are done. The sales receipt must be made out for purchases. It should have your shelf number, your name, and your item number recorded, along with the purchase price and the sales tax added. Items should be described a bit, too, like orange & gold bead bracelet or apron. The docents will call you when an item of yours sells, and you may replace it as you wish. submitted by Mary Kramer

8 COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT When was the first time you knew you were an artist? Kindergarten? High School? Those stay-at-home mom days? Or perhaps in your mature years? I fall into the latter category and had my doubts until the day Judy Peterson called me from the Gallery to tell me a set of my cards sold. [Actually, the truth is, I m a beginning artist with much to learn.] Having moved several times earlier in my married life, I began to appreciate art slowly. In the 90 s, I volunteered to bring art into the classroom at an elementary school in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. A friend had developed an art program there, and I visited the classroom about once a month. The art program was wonderful and culminated in a field trip to the Cleveland Museum of Art. After returning to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1999, I wanted to give back to my hometown community and volunteer somewhere exciting. The Milwaukee Art Museum was expanding and Santiago Calatrava was chosen as the architect. (If you haven t visited this art museum, put it on your bucket list ). I joined the docent training program. Over the ten plus years that I volunteered there, I learned so much about art and how to appreciate all forms of art. As the docent board representative, I worked directly with the staff member responsible for the student and school programs. Together, and with a group of interested docents, we re-created a three- year junior docent program designed for students in second to fifth grades. Why am I telling you all of this? Well, this past fall an opportunity presented itself which afforded me time in a classroom facilitating students appreciation of art. Cragin Elementary School, part of TUSD, has sought and welcomed volunteers into the school and its classrooms. Their community outreach program is excellent. Twice a month, I work with first and second graders, helping them to see and learn about art. Using web-based and TUSD resources, we look at works of art using the elements of art as our guide. It has been a rewarding experience. Cragin is working on becoming a magnet school for the performing arts. Is there a school near you? Do you have any extra time to volunteer? With your experience and talent, you could change the life of a child. And who knows, that child might be a recipient of a SAWG scholarship in the future. Get involved! If you d like more information about my experiences, please contact me. submitted by Monica Hart CALL TO ARTISTS
