3 After over 50 years in the commercial cattle industry, 20 years in the purebred Angus business, and preparing for our 16 th annual bull sale it seems true that the more things change the more things stay the same. We are all constantly facing new challenges in terms of weather, regulations, consumer demands and political B.S. For us the constant force that pulls us through it all is the strength of family working together, and the Angus cow. Our cow herd has paid its way and built our operation into what it is today. We are not a fancy outfit, but we take pride in everything we do, and are continuing to build for future generations. We would not be here today if not for the support of our customers. Even with more selection tools available to us, we feel that by continuing to focus on the basics of structure, fertility, maternal quality, and performance, we will develop a balanced and profitable herd. Sometimes keeping things simple is best. If you have any questions about which bulls are best suited for your needs feel free to visit with us. Our bull offering consists of a strong selection of twoyear old bulls that were born in the youngest 50% of their calf crop. These bulls have not been offered for sale before and are culled rigorously. The yearling offering has something for everyone, including proven genetics, and some new pedigrees for our repeat customers. The Black Angus offering continues to grow and you can expect to see more black bulls going into the future. Our heifer offering will be slightly smaller this year in numbers, but the depth of quality is as strong as ever. Being faced with a tight feed supply we decided to market our F1 heifers last fall, but we will have our straight Red Angus heifers on offer at the sale. In order to continue to offer the highest level of service to our customers we will be videoing the entire offering at the end of February. Videos will be available on our website as well as which will also offer online bidding on sale day. 4 WHAT DO THE NUMBERS MEAN? Calving Ease Rating System: Power Plus: Bulls marked with this symbol have more punch and will have larger calves at birth and more performance at weaning time. They are recommended for cows only. Curve Bender: Bulls marked with this symbol have more moderate birth weights while maintaining performance. They can be used on cows with no problems or large, well developed heifers preferably of British breeds. A few assisted births may be expected out of heifers. Sleep Easy: As the name implies, a Sleep Easy sire is a calving ease bull that lets you sleep easy knowing you should have very little calving difficulty. These are the bulls we recommend to use on heifers. Notes About EPDs: EPD: The birth weight EPD is a figure expressed in pounds and is a predictor of an individual s contribution to its progeny s weight at birth. EPD: The weaning weight EPD is expressed in pounds as the average weight of his progeny compared to an average bull of the breed for weaning weight. EPD: The yearling weight EPD is expressed in pounds as the average weight of his progeny compared to an average bull of the breed for yearling weight. It is the best indicator of overall growth. Milk EPD: The Milk EPD is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk as expressed in his daughters, or in other words, that part of weaning weight attributed to a mother s milk genes. EPD: The EPD is a combination of an animal s Milk EPD added to 50% of its Weaning Weight EPD. It is an indicator of the growth potential of progeny based on performance and milking ability. The EPD is a better indicator of a cow s production potential than just Milk. EPD: The Calving Ease EPD is a percentage of probability that a bull s calves will be born without any assistance. Therefore, animals with a higher positive number will have greater probability of having no calving problems. M EPD: The Maternal Calving Ease EPD is a percentage of probability that a bull s daughter s calves will be born without any assistance. Therefore, daughters of an animal with a higher positive number will have a greater probability of having no calving problems. Please note that the EPDs listed in this sale catalogue are the product of the new Canadian AngusONE Genetic Evaluation. These EPDs are calculated by Angus Genetics Inc in partnership with the American Angus Association. Therefore, EPDs for Canadian Red Angus, Canadian Black Angus, and American Black Angus animals are directly comparable to each other. This is a completely new base for Canadian Red Angus however, therefore, please be advised that the EPDs are not comparable to last year s EPDs for Red Angus. These EPDs are on a completely different scale, so please familiarize your selves with the new Breed Average and with the new threshold number for traits of importance to you. The new AngusONE breed averages are shown below to help you adjust to the new base. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a complex lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder that typically appears within the first three years of life. It is considered to be a spectrum disorder meaning the primary symptoms can be expressed in varying degrees of severity. Individuals with autism will have difficulties with verbal and nonverbal social communication, social interactions, and can display a range of rigid or stereotyped, repetitive behaviors, often with insistence on a specific routine that they will show resistance to changing. Sensitivity to sensory stimuli is also often observed.

Anthem is a balanced performance sire with extra bone, a big square hip and a deep rib. His dam is an exceptional female, and the Anthem daughters in production have proven him to be a strong maternal sire. We feel Anthem is one of the best all around breeding bulls in the Red Angus breed today. 7 Reference sires RED SSS Hard Eight Hard Eight was purchased to serve in our heifer pen and he has proven to be a true calving ease sire. We felt this dark red, good footed Max son would be popular with our customers looking for highly maternal, calving ease genetics. What sealed the deal for us was his dam and sisters in the SSS herd. Hard Eight is also a maternal brother to Red SSS Contender who is a popular herd sire at SSS. He was built right from the ground up with a big foot, heavy bone, extra length and endless shape through his rib and hip. His dam is also from the Anexa cow family which is the best at U2. We were very impressed with the Recon sire group for their hoof quality and spread from birth to yearling. Unanimous was lost at an early age so his sons are limited but are feature bulls. After seeing his dam Meg 85N and maternal sisters we knew we had to incorporate his genetics. His sire Indeed is one of the legendary maternal sires in the breed. Fertility, udder quality and longevity are traits where he excels. Every daughter made the replacement pen, and his daughters have perfect udders with very small teats. We feel so strongly about the maternal merit of Magic Mike that we purchased a half interest in his full sister Red BarEL AB Meg 169Z. Monopoly is a son of Ter Ron Park Place who is a son of the famous HF Tiger 5T. We wanted to add the short gestation genetics of Tiger into our red cattle. Monopoly s first calves all arrived early and without any assistance. In addition to calving ease, Monopoly also has an exceptional hair coat, and is deep sided. His sons have been features in past sales and this year they are headliners as well. We have purchased Monopoly from Semex and will have a larger number of his sons available in the future. He has a massive hip and wide top, and packs a lot of muscle on a moderate frame. After seeing his first calf crop here we are certain we want to incorporate more of his genetics into our program. 26 commercialheifers The open replacement heifers have become a feature in the sale. Being limited by the size of our land base makes these heifers now available. These heifers offer a rare opportunity to purchase foundation seedstock females that have been developed from a purebred Angus cow herd. We are offering a group of straightbred Red Angus females. This is a great opportunity to access replacement heifers that could provide the foundation for an F1 program. Most of the group are sired by our herd sires Monopoly and Hard Eight. We just can t keep them all! They will be presented in working condition and have been developed sidebyside with our own replacements, receiving no additional feed. The will continue to grow and develop for their new owners. We will be offering approximately 15 heifers. They will be sorted and split into smaller groups of 35 head at sale time based on weight, breeding and type. We will have a supplement sheet available at the sale with more information.
