As the New Year opens before us, like a blank page in a sketch book, waiting to be filled with drawings, paintings, and creativity, we can help fill that book by setting goals. George Wise, well-known Idaho artist, told me one of his goals is to paint or draw something every day. You can t wait until you re inspired to do it. Every artist has to be a craftsman, he said. As I watch Bob Beason in my weekly art class expertly draw almost anything on demand, I recall reading Alice Neel s ( ) comment: For me, drawing is the great discipline of art. I realize to progress, I must resolve to work harder to master the craft of drawing by practicing it more often in It is time for me to draw afresh! My New Year s wish for you is to set some positive goals and resolutions as well. Hang them where you can see them every hour of the New Year and be excited for what you can achieve in the coming year. Good luck, good health, good cheer and remember to constantly squint. To ring in the New Year, I am also pleased to announce that the Idaho Community Foundation has awarded the Pocatello Art Center a $5000 grant to create a Visiting Artist Program. Several notable artists will be invited to present master classes, demonstrations, lectures and workshops during These programs will supplement existing classes and are intended to provide ongoing professional development to practicing artists associated with the Center. Attending workshops can stimulate creative impulses, help relieve artist blocks, or result in new ideas and inspirations for future work. We look forward to presenting our program schedule to you sometime in February. Also, in celebration of George Wise s lifelong dedication to the arts, the Pocatello Art Center Board of Directors is hosting a reception in his honor on January 6, 2017 from 5 to 8 p.m. during 1st Friday, at 444 N. Main Street, Pocatello, Idaho. George will be there signing prints. He has created several new oil paintings that will be available for sale at extremely reasonable prices. Collectors mark your calendars for an evening of hors d oeuvres, beverages, music, and lively conversation with this accomplished artist. In closing, I would like to acknowledge the artists who donated their beautiful work to the Center for our raffle to raise revenue for maintenance expenses. We continue to fix leaky pipes, refurbish light sockets, worn out floors, etc. Carol Myers, Torgersen Murdock, Pat Geiger, Pennie Wolf, Karen Wardle, Karen Vargason, Georgia Orwick, and Jennifer Fisher. Winning your art put smiles on the faces of many delighted community members. Thanks again for helping us keep the Art Center inviting and in good repair. Our thanks for the support of Individual and Corporate Donors who help us keep the Art Center Gallery and School a vital part of our community. 3 GALLERY NEWS First Friday Art Walk will be January 6, 2017 by Pat Geiger We will be closed from December 24, 2016 through January 2, We will reopen on Tuesday, January 3, Please have all Holiday Show work picked up by Wednesday, January 4 th and your new work in by that date as well. We will hang the new show Thursday, January 5, after the board meeting around 1pm. Future hangings will be back on Tuesdays before the First Friday art walks. We cordially invite all our members and friends out on First Friday in January to honor George Wise. He will exhibit some of his newer works in a variety of mediums which will be for sale. He will be available to sign his prints which will be offered for a small donation to the Pocatello Art Center. He is looking forward to seeing his friends and students and we hope you will come out and visit with this very humble and amazing teacher/artist. December has been a great month in the gallery. The Holiday Show and Sale has been ongoing and it has brought in a few new patrons. Sales are down from last year but there is a little time left to purchase that special gift for someone you know. The work is beautiful and varied. We have gorgeous paintings and giclees, porcelain, jewelry, silk, photography, cards and much much more. We hope that you have had a chance to experience this show. January s theme is All Seasons and we are looking forward to a fresh new show. Remember themes are only suggested so please bring in any new work that you would love to share. We will have a reception on First Friday that will honor George Wise and we are hopeful that you will all come out and visit with this incredible mentor. His work will be for sale and he will be signing his prints. The center cabinet will house the wooden bowls and vessels of Nathan Hemperly. He uses a variety of woods and techniques and we have no doubt that you will enjoy his art. His work will remain through January and February. As always, we will have our amazing jewelry and hand painted porcelain in the corner cabinets. Our artists change their work out often so you never know what you may find but you will love it! SE Idaho Region of Idaho Watercolor Society by Onita Asbury & Neil Loebs The Southeast Region of Idaho Watercolor Society met early in December at Onita Asbury's home. Treats were shared with mulled wine and other beverages. Mini-paintings were traded between the members in a drawing. It's always amazing what we can do under friendly pressure and everyone was pleased by the one each received. We discussed plans for the next year. We will be having our annual membership show opening on February 3 rd, 1 st Friday at the Art Center. We didn't plan a definite theme, just whatever "new" each painter wants to show. There's no limit on the media or number of paintings each one enters. It will be hung by whomever can help on Tuesday, January 31, so everyone must get them in before then, please. It is a great difficulty to try to hang paintings that come in after the show is hung. The open house, 1st Friday, will be on the 3rd of February, and we will be responsible for the refreshments. The Art Center is so good to let us have this showing place and we IWS members need to show our appreciation. Also, in February we will have a workshop taught by Carol Myers. She will teach a method using alcohol in the process with watercolors. Some may remember the painting she hung in the Christmas Holiday show at the Art Center. We thought it was impressive and would like to try it. She is a great teacher, also, so that will be exciting to try. The workshop will be open to all. It will be the Friday and Saturday, 24th and 25th of February. The price will be $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Our meetings are usually every other month so the next one will be the First Friday Open House in February. Please come see what we are doing, chat with the members, and find out how much fun we have throughout the year. We'd love to have others join the Society. Somebody said "the more the merrier!"

We can look at last year and what we wanted to do this year to see where we are. Membership dues are down from last year. The Miscellaneous income is also down, mostly because of fewer donations. The income from classes fluctuates. *Apartments and Maintenance costs are over the expectations. This is because of the many repairs this year. All the apartments are currently rented. PAC pays the utilities for the apartments. *Linda Groom made a motion to accept the Treasurer's Report. Karen Vargason second. *Sagebrush: The Sagebrush Committee is working on a proposal to approach businesses to donate to the Sagebrush. They are working on music and a variety of things for next year. *Gallery: The gallery looks incredible! Pat thanks all the artists who are sharing their work this year in the Holiday Show. *George Wise will be the Featured Artist in January. PAC invites everyone to come honor him during the First Friday Art Walk on January 5. *Pat has spoken with some ISU Grad students. They are tentatively planning a critique on Tuesday, February 21. This will be open to PAC membership from 6-8pm. *Fund Raising: The Fund Raising Chair met with the Sagebrush Arts Fest Committee to discuss funding to expand the event. The goal is to broaden the Fest by attracting artists from all over the west. We hope to bring local talent in music and dance, to expand children's art activities, and to offer a food fair for an exciting two-day event to be held August 26-27, We also plan to become members of ZAPP, part of the Western States Art Federation, the leading online application system used by more than 70,000 artists for art festivals and fairs nationally. Several businesses, foundations, and financial institutions will be approached to help sponsor the event. *Maintenance: The PAC stairwell light to the basement is a problem. It is too dark to see clearly. Wayne will talk to ANR Properties to work out a solution. Ice Melt will be available for tenants and the Desk people to spread on the icy doorstop. A plan will be made to clean off the snow in the front of the building.

5 Minutes con t: *Publicity: Barbara Orr has been working on a history of PAC. She is submitting it to the Legacy Committee. There are wonderful photographs in the scrapbooks that could be used by the Legacy committee. *Proposal: Write a history of PAC, submit it to the Legacy committee as a potential program.
