A few days after the election, Suspended Superintendent Dr. Janine Walker-Caffrey was dealt another blow when the state refused to reinstate her. Varela and Lebreault had many ethics charges iled against them by Caffrey. The voters made the inal decision. Varela was the top vote getter followed by another vocal critic of Caffrey, Anthony Bermudez. The mandatory installation of cameras would help the police with investigations that occur outside places where liquor is sold and prevent crime from occurring in these areas. If the law were to go into effect, the business owners would be required to install the cameras within 18 months. Similar laws have been put into effect in Newark and surrounding towns to reduce the amount of crime that occurs outside similar public establishments. Business owners who did not comply with the new law in Newark were ined at least $500. Councilwoman Zusette Dato supported the idea, saying that it made sense to help police investigations and have business owners be responsible for the cost rather than taxpayers. However, councilmen Donald Applegate questioned why it was only being put into businesses with liquor licenses. Do gas stations have to have these cameras Do banks? Applegate asked. Anything Perth Amboy Caucus Meeting 4:30 p.m.; Council Meeting 7 p.m. Wednesday 11/13/13 Councilman Donald Applegate can get robbed anywhere Councilwoman Dato made the point that crimes around properties with liquor licenses were likely higher than where other establishments are located. I think the point is if you ask the Chief and he gave his point of view tonight he would say there is a higher incidence where there s alcohol sold than in other settings, Dato said. Councilman Applegate recommended looking into a law enforcement grant that would help these businesses pay for their cameras rather than having them pay all out of pocket. He acknowledged that some businesses were still inancially struggling and making them install cameras would only make it worse. Would there be any grants out there that we could put cameras all up and down Broadway to take the cost off? Applegate asked. You know they are hurting. If there s something we can do for Broadway that would cover a lot. Mayor Fred Henry and Council President Joseph Connors reiterated that the council did not have to make a decision on this at the next council Continued on Page 2

All council members were in attendance for the business meeting. The next city council meeting will be held on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7:00 p.m. Henry Responds to Critics By: Joseph L. Kuchie SOUTH AMBOY - South Amboy Mayor Fred Henry addressed the criticism he received at last month s city council meeting about the anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. Comments were made about Henry and council members about their lack of attendance at the waterfront for the lighting ceremony on the anniversary of Superstorm Sandy. Henry was not at the ceremony or that night s council meeting because he was at another function to honor irst responders. I was not down there or at the council meeting because there was another function that I was invited to honor our irst responders, he said. They requested a city oficial and being that I don t have to be at council meetings I attended this other function. Council President Joseph Connors did make a statement at the beginning of the last meeting explaining where everyone was that night, but the comments Ray Wilenski Mayor Fred Henry were still brought up that it was a shame they weren t in attendance. Mayor Henry explained that it was dificult to be in two places at once. As everybody knows you can t be at two places at one time, he said. We were invited to this other function and I did attend that. I m glad we had the other function at the waterfront and I understand it was well attended It s a shame someone has to take a cheap shot like that at a council meeting when it was already stated why we weren t there. Break-ins, Ferry Service, Topics of Discussion South Amboy Council Meeting 10/29/13 By: Katherine Massopust SOUTH AMBOY - At the 10/29/13 South Amboy Council Meeting, it was noted that Councilwoman Christine Noble attended the Light Up New Jersey Ceremony which took place at the South Amboy Waterfront and commemorated the One Year Anniversary of Superstorm Sandy. It was also mentioned that Mayor Fred Henry went to the Devils Hockey Game that night was unable to attend the ceremony. Councilwoman Zusette Dato mentioned that there were 5 car break-ins reported by the South Amboy Police Department. Chief Darren LaVigne took very strong measures and hand-delivered letters to residents personally. He recommended that cars should not be left unlocked. Most of the cars that were robbed were unlocked. Business Administrator Camille Tooker remarked that some of the vehicle break-ins were throughout the town. Don t leave anything out (pocketbooks, etc. visible in the car) Let s try and help out the police. During the public portion of the meeting resident Nancy McLaughlin asked about the status of the Ferry Service to New York which is supposed to return to South Amboy. Business Administrator Camille Tooker answered that the City of South Amboy has completed 2 phases of the 3 phase project. The 3rd phase of the project is a parking lot and terminal. It is no secret. We have the money. We want to expedite the Ferry Service because of the closing of the Pulaski Skyway. Nancy McLauglin also mentioned an incident which occurred near her home: On Sunday afternoon, I saw a young man carrying a TV and dropping it on the sidewalk. The screen was cracked. It (the TV) wasn t mine. I called the police and was told, It sounds like a sanitation problem. When I woke up the next Business Administrator Camille Tooker morning, the TV was gone. I was concerned that it was stolen. Resident Ray Wilenski wished to address the Council to thank Former South Amboy Mayor Jack O Leary and Councilman Mickey Gross for putting together the Gala for the American Legion. The Gala beneited the Boys & Girls Baseball League State Program which is a leadership program. It a community based organization going to support the community at large. Wilenski added that he was elected Senior Vice President of Disabled Veterans on State Level. We re on the Web!!!!

4 4. The Amboy Guardian * November 13, 2013 I often noticed what s on the bulletin boards on the corner of Madison Avenue & Market Street in Perth Amboy. The particular picture above was very striking. The irst time I saw it was at night when it was illuminated. I immediately took out my cell phone and snapped a shot of it. I noticed that it was a sign for the Wounded Warriors. In the next few days after I took the shot, I meant to look up to see what this organization is all about but I never got around to it. I am writing this editorial on Veteran s Day and decided this was the day to ind out. Their mission is to honor and empower Wounded Warriors. I wondered what made this organization different from other groups who administered to those who have served and come back with severe injuries be it mental or physical. The organization was founded in 2003 by a group of Veterans and friends in Roanoke, Virginia. They decided to help the wounded service men and women of this generation. We found the following information from the Wounded Warrior Project s website: org - The WWP mission is to honor and empower Wounded Warriors who incurred a physical or mental injury, illnesses, or wound, co-incident to your military service on or after September 11, You may also be eligible for the program if you are the family member or caregiver of a Wounded Warrior. In the website, it also gives a breakdown of all the activities, resources and fundraisers EDITORIAL It Was Striking available not only to the warriors, but to their family members. What I love about this organization is that it is grass-roots and it shows what can be done by ordinary people without immediate government intervention. People helping people when there is a need whether it is something that may be piggybacking off of another similar group or organizations that came about when there is a natural disaster like Superstorm Sandy. I applaud those who started the Wounded Warriors Project and the regular people who came together to help those in need during Superstorm Sandy There were a couple of questions we had. The answers were discovered on their website. Apparently, other people had the same concerns. The bottom line is: They saw a speciic need and implemented a program to serve that need. (From the website) WWP began as a small, grassroots effort to provide immediate assistance when a warrior of this generation was injured. We felt we could do the most good by providing more comprehensive programs and services to the newly injured, rather than spread ourselves too thin by trying to help all veterans. We also knew there were many terriic veterans organizations for warriors from previous conlicts, but very few focused on serving our newest generation. The founders recognized what they needed and turned that need into helping others in the same situation.carolyn M. LOCAL PERSPECTIVE The New High School There is talk about a new High School for Perth Amboy. Here are my comments. There is space just west of the current High School. It could be built on the site of what is now Waters Stadium, just a Hurray for Halloween! It was truly great to see so many children out and trick or treating in South Amboy this past Halloween. We were way over due for a festive Halloween. Seeing so many families out and kids enjoying the day reminded me of the days when I was a kid going door to door. The weather was great, the police kept everyone safe and the day was free from incident. It is a far cry from the Halloween of last year that was canceled by Hurricane Sandy. Nice to see the resiliency of people to celebrate fall this year. Speaking of resiliency, it was also pretty awesome to have NJ choose the South Amboy Waterfront as one of Clearing Up Obamacare Regarding the Affordable Care Act (ACA), some things need to be cleared up for many Americans and other failed policy apologists that are failing their families and communities daily. As of this writing, 800,000 New Jersey citizens have fallen victim to insurance policy cancellations. The reason for this is that under the ACA (ObamaCare), these insurance policies that all have been happy with and that they like, do not meet the vague and veiled standards of the ACA. Over 24 times on national television, Obama promised, that if you like your health insurance and doctor, you can keep them, period. That is not the case, but in fact a lie that such conservative media centers such THE COMMUNITY VOICE its locations for the Light Up New Jersey event on Oct. 29th. Hundreds of people gathered to share stories, sip hot coffee (courtesy of Dunkin Donuts) and joint thousands of others down the NJ coast to point our lashlights to the sky to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. The evening was set in motion by some opening words by Sayreville Mayor Kennedy O Brien. South Amboy Council members Mickey Gross and Christine Noble stopped by and the Sayreville Council was very visible that night. Seems the only person of prominence that didn t show up that night was South Amboy Mayor Fred Henry. As it happens to be, he went to a Devils hockey game that night instead of the anniversary event being held in his own as NBC. CBS, the L.A. Times and the New York Times have clearly exposed. Secondly, Obama and his advisers clearly erred again in the program design. Under his ACA, young people were expected to buy in to the plan to support the older and poor. Apparently that crack White House crew forgot that they enacted the ability for children to stay on their parents insurance until age 26, clearly eliminating a major source of funding ObamaCare by their own hand. I would ask if New Jerseyans and all American men and women, regardless of age, as they will have to pay for unneeded services under ObamaCare... Do women truly wish their policies to cover prostate exams because it is paid for? I have no need for abortion services or pap smears as God has narrowed my ability to get short walk away. That existing street would be blocked to vehicle trafic. Waters Stadium has little available parking space, a new stadium in the northwest area could have adequate parking space or space for a second playing ield. Building a new High School at the edge of town may require a perpetual need for transporting students. The ideal location is one close to where most students live. Some claim the state would pay for it, but the state only gets its money from people. Spending more in one area leaves less money for other areas. Politics is the prioritization of spending and taxing. Ronald A. Sobieraj town. Turns out the Devils won that night, unfortunately Mayor Henry, lost...again. This pretty much sums up how lood victims have felt since the storm...where is the leadership?...and shame on him, as it doesn t get much easier than it was on Oct. 29th. As people recovering from Sandy in South Amboy face the latest blunder from city hall (being issued letters of Substantial Damage that were signed off on by the wrong city oficial -- something the State even says is odd), I hope the frustration is enough motive to make sure you don t go to a hockey game on December 31, 2014 and be there for the mayor s last day in ofice... just to show you care. Andrew Horezga those free services. Finally, allowing government control of 1/3 of the economy? When has it (the U.S. government) ever proved it can do anything except design a postage stamp? Anyone who truly believes that the government can succeed at anything except gain weight and layers of bureaucracy ad ininitum., is not very clear as to what the purpose and limitations are on the government. Then again, some people love to be motivated by fear and submit to anything any branch of government or any political party dangles before them. That, my friends, is truly why we are at where we are at in America. Maybe its time to leave Oz and get back to reality. Rev. This is the Pilla s family s (including Megan s sister OLP 6th grader Rosemarie Pilla) 4th year participating and raising money for AHA. This year Megan held a Survivor Torch to celebrate her story of survival. In February 2007 at her 3 year old well visit Megan s pediatrician detected a heart murmur. Megan was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect called Atrial Septal Defect which is more commonly known as a hole in the heart. Drivers should be extra alert to avoid collisions that could result in injuries and damage to their vehicles, as deer movements related to breeding have begun and will pick up in the coming weeks. Motorists are encouraged to alert the Department of Transportation of dead deer they ind along the state highway system and deer crossing locations. DOT has made it easy and convenient for residents to do so online at state.nj.us/transportation/ commuter/potholeform. shtm Triggered by shorter days and cooler weather, deer disperse and move around considerably as they search for mates. Studies indicate the peak mating season for deer in New Jersey runs from late October, throughout November, and into mid-december in all regions of the state, beginning earliest in northern regions.
