1 SKETCHBOOK THE SOUTHERN ARIZONA WATERCOLOR GUILD www. southernazwatercolorguild.com APR 2014 Location Location Location!!! After hours and hours of investigation and discussion over a 4 month period, your Board of Directors has decided upon a new home for SAWG meetings and workshops, the Scottish Rite Cathedral of Tucson. The September meeting will be our first gathering there, and we are hopeful that those of you in Tucson at that time will join us to kick off our year. Built in 1915, the Scottish Rite Cathedral has been on the National Register of Historic Places for over 30 years. In fact, if you go to their web site, tucsonscottishrite.org, and click onto facility rentals, you will have access to a brief video tour of the building. Located on South Scott Ave., many of you have parked in their lot when attending the theater downtown. Closer to September we will provide you with a number of route options which may help to make the trip to this new location a bit less stressful. In addition, since car-pooling may be an idea to pursue, if you d like, we ll help you locate other people within your zip code. Leaving our ideal home at the Windmill Suites is a move we didn t expect to have to make. Because the new owner expects to dramatically reduce the size of the meeting space, there is no way we could fit. We were fortunate to be able to find a facility the likes of Scottish Rite that will be able to accommodate us and allow us to maintain our budget. The search was exhausting, but we re pleased with the choice, and we hope you will be as well. Experimental Show April 8 - May 4 The EXPERIMENTAL SHOW is always a fun show to see how far our artists push their medium! Come and see new techniques, unusual objects incorporated in the work including metal, string, fabric, feathers and mirrors. This year there will be a statement by the artist included with the piece about what was experimental to them. The Awards Reception for this show is Thursday night, April 10th. Reminder! 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT I am ever so hopeful that you listened to my plea at the March meeting regarding yourattendance at the April meeting. On April 14th we will be awarding thousands of dollars in scholarships to a handful of deserving future artists from local high schools. This program doesn t usually fill the meeting space like a famous artist does when he s giving a demonstration. However, when you consider the importance of this community connection, the place should be packed. All too often the majority of the seats are filled with family members and teachers of the winners. Let s change that with this year s meeting! It s only 90 minutes. You can do it! Please pencil it onto your calendar right now. April 14th. 7:00. I know you won t regret it!! It s April! It s the month of our election of officers for the upcoming year! No one has called me to request a spot on the ballot! No one has ed me! No one has spoken to me about the possibility of being a candidate! YIKES! Either you are extremely satisfied with the status quo and you can t imagine doing the jobs any better than we re doing, or, you re really relieved that for another year you don t have to be prompted into action. There are, however, three positions on the Board of Directors that must be changed every two years: President, Vice-President of Programs, and Vice-President of Shows. Yes, I will run again for President, and yes, Judy Constantine will run again to be Vice-President of Shows. Bob Karns, unfortunately, is unable to stay with us for another year as Vice-President of Programs due to a heavy workload in the real world. Thus, as Uncle Sam says, We need YOU! We really do need you. You re hesitating, I bet, because you don t know what this position entails. According to our bylaws, the duties of this Vice-President include the planning and preparation for monthly SAWG meetings, serving as liaison to secure meeting space, supporting the work of chairs of those committees and appointments that relate directly to SAWG programs and assisting the President when requested. Oh, and yes, there s that exciting extra of filling in for the President if she goes on vacation. Seriously, your current Board of Directors is enormously supportive of SAWG and of each other. We dabble in each other s areas of expertise, offering advice and supportive shoulders. One person s issues are never viewed in isolation. In essence, this is nothing short of a wonderfully organized and dedicated group of people. This is your opportunity to become a part of them. Please consider trying it out for a year. Give a year and then decide about another. How hard can that be? Here s my address in case you ve lost it: jc1755@gmail.com. On that note, I have exhausted my appeals. It is a very busy world in which we all strive to find just a little time to paint, let alone attend meetings or serve in an office. But the reality is, you have the summer off to exhale. Stick with the program just a little longer and consider how you can help in the new year. I m the eternal optimist.see you in April! SHOW NEWS La Pilita Show We had a wonderful reception and most of our artists were able to attend.music was great, weather was great, and the food table was overflowing. 4 WORKSHOP NEWS Carl Purcell March Demo, Workshop Artist & Awards Judge Painting the Hidden Patterns of Nature It was unanimous! All of Carl s workshop students agreed that he is a superior teacher, made learning fun and kept the class engaged. Everyone s expectations were exceeded and they look forward to his return. Classes included were: instructions on which colors to use for light, medium and dark washes, the correct proportion of pigment to water, how to save whites, painting linear patterns and correct composition. Carl taught them how to see patterns of value and color in nature, in photographs and how to paint them rhythmically. Students practiced repetition with variety, painting an abstract foundation for a realistic painting and followed each demo step by step. Everyone concluded it was a great opportunity to learn new and useful techniques!
