4 Page 4 The PALETTE Rio Grande Art Association ART SEE/ ART SPEAK WHAT A LINE! The line you heard in a bar or used as an excuse when you forgot to do something is a verbal line uttered to hide the truth. A visual line is not that easy to describe. The best description in art terminology is LINE is a mark which moves from point A to point B. A line's activities are worth a thousand words. I'm not fibbing! Here is the proof. Take a good look at your hand. Notice how your eyes separated the shape of your hand from the space around it. Although this shape was not actually drawn, it was traced by your eyes following the edges of your hand, a positive shape from the negative space around. Laymen would call this invisible line an outline. The proper art words are CONTOUR LINES. Want to play more with movement and line tricks? Raise your hand. Wiggle your fingers and whirl your hand gracefully in the air. Are you watching this activity? Wow! Your eyes speed up as they follow those curves and twists. When action is drawn instead of a contour, the result is a GESTURE LINE. While a lines may move the eye in any direction, they are either STRAIGHT or CURVED. Watch out! They can change types as quickly as you can blink an eye. To make matters even more complex lines are able to go from being as thick as a couple of inches to being as narrow as a human hair or become no more than an edge where a black object touches a white one. The emotional response to straight line domination is straight forward, inflexible, and so rigid it seems machine made. If the lines cause the eye to move from side to side (horizontal) there is a lack of liveliness, and endless expanse of empty space. If the straight lines are repeated in a vertical top to bottom direction, the eye feels more activity and dignity as if a person was sitting stiffly upright, standing tall with stomach pulled tightly in and eyes staring forward or pausing before a second before taking another step kind of formality. If the straight line pattern is pointed in a diagonal direction, the activity the eyes see is formal and orderly as though the activity being viewed is a marching band or wind blown field of grass. However if the straight diagonal lines point in different directions so they cross, beware. The eye becomes confused about which way to go as a conflict is taking place. When curved lines dominate a drawing, the eyes follow the direction, but the mind's eye senses a more light hearted topic. Just like the straight line, curved lines convey a mood. Lips curve up to smile and curve down to scold. When both upper and lower lip corners go in the same direction, all is in harmony be it happy or sad and angry. When straight lines crossed, the mind was confused, but when curved lines go in opposite directions, the eye makes a circle - a line without beginning or ending! Curved lines are not as perfectly precise and formal as straight lines, but they have there ups and downs like smiles and frowns. The emotional response to curved lines is that they give the mind a chance to be a wee bit lighter and frivolous as they skip on their way like edges of candy shop awnings, the swirl of a plant's growth or ruffles along the ladies skirts. Did I mention, domination of a linear type of line tends to suggest a gender to works of art? Strong firm lines seem masculine and wiggly curvy lines seem frivolously feminine. Watch for next month's Art See/Art Speak article on the magic of optical illusions. HAPPY HALLOWEEN Y'ALL!!!!!! Jeanne Weitz
