2 WHAT THE PRESS SAYS At Bregenz Festival this year grand opera is coupled with pop pageant. And it works! That s Bregenz: a lavish show on the lake for 200,000 spectators each summer, with many valuable small productions in tow. A good model. And this year Carmen reached a not previously attained mark on the scale of theatrical effectiveness (where in fact the sky s the limit). The show is a feast for the eyes, the lake stage a spectacle in itself. On a basic set consisting of a colossal pair of female hands with a flurry of playing cards between them, the two artists create nothing less than a visual firework display of projections and colours. In the process Kasper Holten, 44, pulls off the magic trick of staging this well known Spanish crime-of-passion drama in part as a psychodrama in an intimate setting. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra under Paolo Carignani played in the Festspielhaus. Thanks to sophisticated sound technology the audience heard the orchestra in superb quality. The stage set contributes a lot to the success of Carmen: enormous playing cards serve as performing areas and for video projections (Luke Halls). In the fascinating alternation of colours and images, the cards measuring 7 m by 4.3 m sometimes appear to whirl through the air. She then welcomes the advances of the bullfighter Escamillo. The fateful moment when Carmen throws the cards into the air gave Es Devlin the idea for her stage design on Lake Constance. The British stage designer has created sets for pop acts like Adele, U2, Take That, the Pet Shop Boys and Kanye West. The playing cards in Kasper Holten s production can do much more than tell fortunes: they are performing areas for soloists, choral singers, dancers, stuntmen and smugglers. Also, projections on their surface conjure up the different worlds of bullfighting, cartomancy and passionate love. The melody that French composer Georges Bizet found for the passion of soldier Don José has become immortal, as has the song Carmen sings when she comes out of the cigarette factory where she works, her famous Habanera about the unruliness of love. Her wild dance in Lillas Pastia s bar, the Seguidilla, the Toreador s Song and the march into the bullfighting arena are»earworms«too all over the world. 4 GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS CANCELLATION AND EXCHANGE Bregenz Festival is committed to holding performances on the lake stage and wishes to point out that performances may go ahead in the rain and may also be late in starting or interrupted because of inclement weather. We therefore recommend that all visitors bring warm, rainproof clothing, but no umbrellas as they restrict the view. Performances on the lake stage run without an interval. Seats that are adjacent in the Lake Stage auditorium may not be next to each other in the Festspielhaus because of the different seating plan. For performances on the lake stage, the discount applies to tickets of categories 3 7; in categories 3 and 4, student and school children tickets must be purchased at a ratio of 1:1 with full-price tickets. In Categories 1 and 2 no discount applies. A reduced-price ticket is valid only in conjunction with a student / school pupil identity card. 6 ORCHESTRAL CONCERTS Masterpieces of the symphonic repertoire can be heard in the orchestral concerts. Familiar and popular works two Beethoven symphonies, Dvořák s best known symphony and two important pieces by Richard Strauss are on the programme alongside a complete novelty: the huge Symphony for Baritone and Orchestra by Tyrolean composer Thomas Larcher, who is working on an opera that has been commissioned by Bregenz Festival. In that concert, featuring music solely by Czech composers, the Prague Philharmonic Choir a regular guest at Bregenz Festival since 2011 will be celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of their country s independence with Dvořák s Te Deum. 7 SALES GUIDELINES 2018 FOR COMMERCIAL DISTRIBUTORS EARLY PAYMENT DISCOUNT The discount described below is available to commercial tour operators that make fixed group bookings of at least 20 tickets per order and per date for any performances given as part of Bregenz Festival. The early payment discount does not apply in the case of the Festival Lounge, Premium Tickets, and Packages. Admission tickets show the normal price. Please contact us in good time to benefit from the early payment discount. EXTENDED PURCHASE OPTION Option periods are not coupled with the time limits of the early payment discount. If you do not wish to purchase reserved tickets within the agreed time limits, we will offer you an extended purchase option if the ticket sales situation so permits. Please note that, should we not hear from you by the end of the option period, the reserved tickets will be automatically redistributed for sale. We therefore request that you contact us in good R ETURN EXCHANGE OF TICKETS Up to 10% of tickets you have purchased can be returned to us for resale without our charging commission, no later than 30 days according to the postmark before the date of performance (this does not apply to the Festival Lounge). In no other case may purchased tickets be returned. Changes in the programme or cast do not constitute an entitlement to return or exchange tickets. CONCESSIONS For organisational reasons, tickets at reduced prices can be purchased only by telephone on or in person at the Ticket Center. Discounted tickets are valid only in conjunction with the identity card entitling the holder to the concession. If a ticket holder fails to display the relevant identity card, (s)he must pay the difference between the concession price and the full price. SPECIAL OFFER FOR COACH DRIVERS AND COACH PARTY ORGANISERS Coach drivers or coach party organisers (of groups of 20 people or more) receive a free ticket or a meal voucher, depending on availability. These must be applied for in advance in writing and in the name of the beneficiary. Tickets, issued as e-tickets, will be sent to the tour operator. To gain admission, the ticket holder must show proof of identity as a coach driver or coach party organiser. The transfer or sale of such tickets to third parties is not permitted. The tickets are for single unsold seats and are not located next to the seats booked by the group. No entitlement to such tickets exists. Meal vouchers are valid solely during the lake stage performance and entitle the holder to a discount on a one-plate meal in the restaurant marquee. ARRIVING BY COACH The location of parking for coaches/buses close to the festival grounds is shown on the map overleaf. Coach parking is subject to charges and is possible at four sites in Bregenz: Parkplatz West 32 parking bays for the duration of the festival; Seestadtareal 8 bays (max. 3 hours); Reichsstraße 11 bays (privately operated by the Pfänder mountain cable car); Remise 10 bays (near Parkplatz Ost). PUBLIC TRANSPORT An admission ticket to a Bregenz Festival event entitles the holder to free travel by bus and by rail within the Vorarlberg Public Transport Network on the day of the event. For the return journey following a performance on the lake stage there is an additional train service to Bludenz and Lindau as well as a bus service to Lustenau, Bregenz Forest and Gaißau (Swiss border). 12 A DAY IN BREGENZ Bregenz offers plenty of variety, perhaps MOUNTAIN AND LAKE EATING AND DRINKING PARKING NOTICE more than any other town on Lake Constance. Why not combine a visit to Bregenz Festival with a day spent in this lively cultural town? ART AND CULTURE Stroll from Leutbühel along the Maurachgasse into the historical upper town, where the oldest buildings in Bregenz are to be seen. Climb the town s landmark, Martinsturm (Martin s Tower), which has the largest onion-dome in the Lake Constance area.
