3 Preparation: Sand entire piece until smooth. Wipe clean and with the 1 Glaze Wash, apply DecoArt Multi-Purpose Sealer to the front and cut edges only of the board. Let dry. Sand a second time where you applied the sealer. Your piece is now ready to paint! Back of board: On a paper plate, mix equal parts of the DecoArt Staining & Antiquing Medium with Dark Chocolate. Using a soft cloth, rub into the back side of the board until it s evenly covered. Let dry and apply a second coat to deepen the stain if desired. Painting Instructions: Use appropriate color transfer paper as needed. Use the 1 Glaze Wash, paint front and sides with Deep Midnight Blue. Let dry and apply a second coat. Once dry, gently trace where the ground line will be. Float that area in with Titanium White using the ¾ Glaze Wash. Clean up water line with Maxine Mop ¾. Starting at the clean water edge, gently pat your way up to mop up excess water, taking care to not mop into your float or you will remove your paint. The rest of the snow mounds will be painted in later. Trace large snowman and the scarf. (Arms, crown and facial features to come later.) Trace the ladder. Ladder: Tape the sides to get a crisp line. Use the size Round and paint ladder with Dark Chocolate. Switch to the 10/0 Script Liner for the small left top portion. Remove the tape. Use the size 4 Shader and shade right sides of ladder and rungs with Soft Black. Use the Maxine Mop ¼ to mop up edges. Repeat the process to highlight on the left side with Fawn. Large Snowman: Load the ¼ Deerfoot with Buttermilk. Be sure to remove the excess paint by pouncing your brush onto a clean, dry paper towel before you start to paint. Stipple in Buttermilk to create the body, trying to keep the area where the scarf will be clean. Switch over to the 1/8 Deerfoot for the toe part of the foot. Reload the brush as needed, always removing the excess first. Clean off your brush with a dry paper towel and repeat the same process with Light Buttermilk, then with Titanium White and finally with Cool White. With each additional layer, you will add less and less colour so to not cover up the previous layer. 2

4 3 Scarf: Use the size 6 Shader, and base in Jade Green. Paint the wide stripes in Winter Blue with the size 1 Shader. Line work is Napa Red using the 10/0 Script Liner. Shade under the face and in the crease with Black Green using the size 8 Shader. Highlight opposite sides with Soft Sage. Transfer the pattern for the star, tree and branches. Tree: Base trunk in Dark Chocolate using the size 3 Round at the bottom and switching to the 10/0 Script Liner as you get higher. Using the size 10 Shader, shade down right side with Soft Black and highlight left side with Fawn. For the upper thin part of the trunk, use the 10/0 Script Liner to softly line in the shade and highlight. Paint the branches in the 10/0 Script Liner and Dark Chocolate. Needles: Needles are painted using the 10/0 Script Liner and three different colours. As you apply the second and third colour, you will paint in less needles to avoid totally covering your first layer of colour. When painting the needles, use a light hand. By this, I mean don t be too stiff or your needles will turn out like sticks. You want them to be light and airy with a slight curl at the end. Okay here we go! Load your 10/0 Script Liner with Black Green, and begin to paint the needles on the branches. Next, keeping a dirty brush, load it with Hauser Medium Green and start over, being careful to not cover all of the Black Green. Finally, (still using a dirty brush) load it with Jade Green and repeat the process. Star: Tape all sides and base in Golden Straw using the size 8 Shader. Apply as many coats as needed to get a solid colour and remove tape when finished. Shade where shown with the size 6 Shader using Burnt Sienna, and then highlight with Light Buttermilk. Transfer the pattern for the small snowman body, hat and scarf. (Arms and facial features will come later.) Paint the small snowman using the same method as the large snowman. Retrace the scarf part and base in Napa Red using the size 8 Shader. Large stripes are in Jade Green, using the size 1 Shader. Thin stripes are Black Green with the 10/0 Script Liner. Using the size 8 Shader, shade with Soft Black between crease, and to separate the pieces at the

5 back. Highlight opposite with Hot Shots/Neons Fiery Red. Paint in tassels with Jade Green and Napa Red using the 10/0 Script Liner. Hat: Base in Winter Blue using the size 8 Shader. Shade in the crease and at the bottom with French Grey Blue with the size 6 Shader, and highlight on top with Light Buttermilk. Use the ¼ Maxine Thomas mop to soften edges. Stipple in the fur trim and pom-pom with Buttermilk using the 1/8 Deerfoot. Repeat with Light Buttermilk, and then again with Titanium White. Add a small amount of Cool White for added brightness. Be careful to not overlap the earlier colours. The pom-pom has a shade of French Grey Blue at area closest to the hat base, done with the size 6 Shader. The ribbon is done once with Jade Green then again with Light Buttermilk, using the 10/0 Script Liner. Twigs on hat and the crown: The branches are in Dark Chocolate with the 10/0 Script Liner. Double load the size 2 Filbert with Hauser Medium Green and Jade Green and paint in tiny little leaves. The more pressure you apply, the larger your leaf will be. The berries are Napa Red by using the stylus, and once dry, add a tiny dot of Light Buttermilk as a highlight. Transfer noses, face details, arms, tree ornaments and bucket of ornaments. Ornaments: The tree ornaments are painted in with the size 3 Round and shade/highlight with the size 6 Shader as follows: Blue ones: Base in Winter Blue, shade to the right with French/Grey Blue and highlight to the left with Light Buttermilk. Red ones: Base in Napa Red, shade to the right with Soft Black and highlight to the left with Hots Shots/Neons Fiery Red. Yellow ones: Base in Golden Straw, shade to the right with Burnt Sienna and highlight to the left with Light Buttermilk. Add a highlight of Light Buttermilk with the 10/0 Script Liner on left side of each ornament. Snowman arms: With Dark Chocolate, using the size 3 Round, paint in the stick arms. Then using the 10/0 Script Liner, and the same colour, paint in the branch fingers. With the size 4 Shader, shade bottom of the arms with Soft Black and after cleaning your brush, highlight the tops with Fawn. For highlights on the fingers, lightly line them with Fawn using the 10/0 Script Liner. Metal Bucket: Tape the sides for a crisp edge. Use the size 10 Shader and base in Neutral Grey. Once you re done, remove the tape. Shade on right side with Graphite, using the size 12 Shader then highlight with Slate Grey. Ornaments in the bucket are painted the same as for the tree. Finish floating in the snow on the ground, around the bucket with the ¾ Glaze Wash. Snowman faces: Noses: Base in Canyon Orange using the size 3 Round 4

6 and 10/0 Script Liner towards the tip. Shade with Oxblood, on the bottom and by the face with the size 4 Shader, and highlight with Tangerine on top. Add a light highlight of Golden Straw on the top for extra brightness. Eyes and mouth are Lamp Black using the stylus. Once dry, create a small eyelid with Lamp Black using the 10/0 Script Liner. Keep this very thin. Add a dot of Light Buttermilk in the eyes with the stylus. Stipple in the cheek area with the 1/8 Deerfoot using Heritage Brick. This is done very lightly be sure to remove most of the paint onto a dry paper towel and remember you can always add more, but it s very hard to remove it. So best to do it very lightly. Shading the snowmen: Using a clean brush, wet the area with clean water prior to shading. This will allow for more play time with your colour. Prepare the size 10 Shader with French Grey/Blue and shade under the scarves, around the arms, by the noses, under the hat on the small snowman, under body on the large snowman by his legs and down the backs of his legs. Transfer the patterns for: BE- LIEVE, snowflake and swirls. Believe: Tape straight sides where possible. Base letters in Fawn using the size 6 Shader. Once dry remove tape and keep going from letter to letter until done. Shade where shown with Dark Chocolate and highlight with Light Buttermilk using the size 6 Shader. Mop up with the ¼ Maxine Thomas mop to soften. Large snowflake and swirls: All line work is done with the 10/0 Script Liner and Cool White. The dots of snow are with the stylus. (If your stylus isn t large enough, use the end of the handle of a liner brush). Finishing: Sign and finish with DecoArt DuraClear Varnish - Satin. 5
