The exhibition spanning various periods traces the development of disaster pictures and, at the same time, examines the reasons behind this subject s prevalence in art. 12 APRIL 28 JULy 2019 THE DrAWING OF REALISM HAMBURG S PAINTING OF THE 19th CENTURY 16 November February 2019 Philippe Vandenberg Kamikaze The destruction (Kamikaze) of the preceding as a fundamental condition for all creativity became the Belgian artist Philippe Vandenberg s ( ) key stylistic and working principle. His pictures tell of the dark side of humanity, of hatred and violence, coldness and agitation and of communicating and sharing among humans via art. Vandenberg s art is marked by an intensity that captivates and irritates, addresses and engages the viewer and inspires reflection. In the 19th century many painters from Hamburg departed to different parts of the world. Returning with new influences and rich experiences, they laid the defining foundation for German Realism. Discover this exiting century with its development from Classicism to Romanticism, the period of Realism and Naturalism, all the way to Impressionism, from the perspective of the so-called Hamburg School

11 10 MAy 22 SEPTEMBER 2019 IN THE LIGHT OF THE NORTH DANISH PAINTING FROM THE ORDRUPGAARD COLLECTION The Ordrupgaard Musuem with its masterpieces of Danish painting of the 19th and early 20th century will be hosted at the Hamburger Kunsthalle. Towards the end of the 19th century the transition to Modern Art took its course also in Denmark. It involved the end of the grand narratives and an orientation towards simple, real life. The spectrum of the show ranges from the pioneers of the Golden Age to representatives of the National Romantic style, all the way to the prominent Symbolist Vilhelm Hammershøi. 31 August january YEARS Hamburger Kunsthalle In 2019 the Hamburger Kunsthalle is celebrating its 150th anniversary. Since 1869 the uniquely comprehensive collection, developed from the beginning by the citizens of Hamburg, has been open to the public at the heart of the city. The joint effort has resulted in one of the most important museums in Germany. In the anniversary year, we will direct our attention to the museum and its collection from diversified and sometimes unusual perspectives: with many interventions in the collection, discussions, the participation of our audience and, not least, a big birthday party. 25 OcTober February 2020 Tiepolo, Fragonard, Goya AND THE REVOLUTION IN PAINTING The great artists Giambattista Tiepolo, Fragonard, François Boucher, Joshua Reynolds and Goya responded to the ideological, political and societal changes of the 18th century with their art. They revolutionized painting by redefining artistic standards and breaking with conventions in an equally innovative and provocative manner. Based on these fundamental changes, they created the foundations of Modernism in the great artistic centres of Venice, Paris, London, Hamburg and Madrid.
