The materials were compiled as part of the library of the Association Collection, a professional institution founded in 1871 and designed to regulate and encourage the development of the medicine in Los Angeles. Historical Note The Association, begun in 1871, is a professional institution designed to regulate and encourage the development of the medicine in Los Angeles. Since then, the organization has established itself as an important institution in the profession. The Association's library quickly became an archive for the medical history of California and an invaluable research resource for physicians. Scope and Content This collection contains approximately 870 publications and printed items, produced by various organizations, related to hospitals, medicine, medical education, and public health, chiefly in Southern California in the 20th century. The materials were compiled as part of the library of the Association Collection, a professional institution designed to regulate and encourage the development of the medicine in Los Angeles. The bulk of the collection consists of programs for meetings, conventions, and congresses; annual reports for medical societies, hospitals, and medical schools; and doctor, staff, and medical student directories. In addition, there are reprints of speeches and addresses; yearbooks for medical schools; commemorative, biographical, and historical publications; some original historical documents; by-laws and founding documents; and some planning and administrative documents. The materials include items produced by nearly 200 different authors, though many organizations are represented by only a few items. There are over 140 items published by or about the Association. The Association Collection consists of 7,000 rare volumes and journals, as well as additional manuscript collections, in the history of medicine. To begin searching this collection, use the subject

Note, for example, that a study produced by an architectural firm for a hospital will be filed with the hospital, and a biographical sketch will be filed under the subject's name. Within the finding aid, each item entry includes the following information: item call number, title and date, number of pages, any applicable notes on the physical extent or content of the item, and the call number previously assigned to the item by the Association before being transferred to the Huntington Library.
