17 Hopstreet Gallery proposes for Art Rotterdam 2018 a duo-presentation by two of their represented artists Sara Bjarland and Bas van den Hurk. Both artists have a common interest in the sculptural, the spatial and they work like archaeologists. They are interested both in the physical object and the nature of the meaning of objects. Sara Bjarland ( 1981 Helsinki lives and works in Amsterdam) explores the grey area between the natural and the artificial, and the interchangeability of synthetic and natural materials in our everyday lives. Through photography, video and installation she points at the ambiguity of cultural objects which through imitation are hardly distinguishable from natural organisms. For this, Bjarland often uses discarded and dirty objects that she finds on the street; remnants and leftovers from our consumption society. Through staging and framing her subjects carefully, she gives the objects have a different value that would otherwise go unnoticed. Recent shows include Rumination Tale at Plan B Projects, Amsterdam (2016), Die van Aalst - contemporary art from private collections, Aalst (2016), The Prophecy of Bees at Kunstfort Vijfhuizen (2016), Vectors of Kinship at Shanghai Biennale (2016), Formations at Witteveen Art Center, Amsterdam (2015), Invasive Exotics at RAM Galleri, Oslo (2015), Meditations on a Hobby Horse at CIAP, Hasselt and Viewfinders - Nordic and Baltic Contemporary Photography, Riga Art Space (2014). In the summer of 2016 Sara Bjarland took part in an artist residency at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios in Dublin, and in she was a resident artist at HISK in Ghent. Her work is part of private collections in Belgium, The Netherlands and Finland, and was recently acquired by the ARTIS-collectie in Amsterdam. In 2015 Hopstreet presented her work in the NEW ART SECTION. Bas van den Hurk ( 65 Tilburg lives and works in Tilburg) Exhibitions are made into interstices between painting, fashion and architecture. His recent paintings, stretched of silk, are smeared and dabbed with a palette that pulls at one's eyes. Bright magentas and deep sandstone. Motives are printed through them, a fragmented image of a costume from the Triadic Ballet designed by Okskar Schlemmer. These paintings are brought into play with pieces of fabric patch-worked and sewn into collaborative, handmade suits and dresses and sculptural structures that function as displays for elements referring to the painting process. His work has been show extensively worldwide at, amongst others, Kunsthalle CCA Andratx, Mallorca, Spain, Wendy Cooper Gallery, Chicago, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Autocenter, Berlin, Rod Barton, London, RH Contemporary, New York, Jerome Pauchant, Paris and Halsey McKay, East Hampton. Recent group shows include Emergent, Veurne, De Vleeshal, Middelburg, Cell Project Space, London, Temporary Gallery, Cologne, The Neutra Museum, Los Angeles, Thierry Goldberg, New York and The Colombo Biennale, Sri Lanka.
