2 SUMMER CAMPs 2012 Open Arts Studio is a school of the arts where students are given the freedom to express themselves in a safe and noncompetitive environment. Our educational approach utilizes creativity and fun to help students develop new techniques and increase their self confidence. Open Arts Studio offers a variety of summer camps for kids ages 5½ through 14. Camps are designed so students have fun while learning new skills and techniques in visual arts, music or theater. Each week we provide students with different themes and projects. Camps are held on a weekly basis and run for five consecutive days, Monday through Friday. There are two camp times each week: the AM Camps run from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and the PM Camps run from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Kids will often sign up for both sessions, bring a sack lunch, and stay for our lunch club! 3 POTTERY & CLAY Open Arts Studio s clay program teaches many techniques and offers students the opportunity to work with clay in a variety of methods. The slab roller, extruder, molds, hand tools, and pottery wheel are among the tools students will become familiar with as they build their creations! A nimal I nspiration Week 1, June Projects include: bird houses, dog bowls, cat dishes, outdoor bird baths & bird feeders, and pet slugs. P uget S ound P ottery Week 2: June Star fish, sea turtles, sea anemones and puffer fish are among the many clay creations. Wind chimes with your favorite ocean going creatures: along with recreations of tide pools, sea castles and beach combers treasures. Helping at Home Week 3, July 2-6 (no camp 7/4) Campers will create functional items for in the home, such as bookends, keepsake boxes or jewelry trees, key chains, foot sculpture door stoppers, sconces, and hide-a-keys. R enaissance R evival Week 4, July 9-13 Campers will create Renaissance theme pieces such as prince and princess crowns, dragons and monsters, usable goblets & chalices, and a coat of arms, among so much more! G ames I n C lay Week 5, July Campers will create a variety of games, from classic chess and checkers boards, to new games the campers will create! Other creations include tick-tack-toe, puzzles, and mancala boards. Sewing Camp This camp will teach campers everything they need to get started sewing! They will learn how to thread the machine, wind the bobbin, adjust tension, change needles, and troubleshoot. They will sew straight lines and corners and make a pillow slip, beach tote, pj s and more! *All supplies are included. For campers ages Pottery Camp Schedule AGES 5½ to 8: K itc h en C reations Week 6, July Campers will create items such as double-decker chip and dip bowls, big forks and spoons, one-cup teapots, a butter dish and cover, a pie dish & pie weights, cookie cutter basket bowls, and clay trivets. i S culpt F un Week 7, July 30 - August 3 Campers will become potters and sculptors as they learn how to play with various ideas such as scale, multiples, detailing, stacking, texture and craftsmanship. Projects include: giant paper clips, stacking totem cups that create a totem pole, small houses that make up a village, clay birds on wire, and more! G rass R oots C lay Week 8, August 6-10 This week campers will explore farm and garden theme projects such as an ant farm with a Plexiglas cover, chickens and birds with wire legs attached to a clay base, birdon-nest lidded boxes, bird houses, windmills, silo lidded jars, and unglazed garden stones. 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. AGES 8 to 14: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. G lobe T rotting Week 9, August Travel around the world in five days while creating medieval European and African tribal masks, animal and people figurines, maracas and whistles, Japanese Lamps and much more. J okes on P arade Week 10, August Campers get a chance to release their inner silly, creating items such as grenade salt and pepper shakers, toilet bowl candy dishes, clowns, dog poo hide-a-keys, fake cell phones, and much more! BEST OF SUMMER Week 11, August We ll take some of the most popular pottery projects from this summer and visit them one last time in this summer camp! Exposure to Photography Photography camp immerses campers in a wide variety of digital, picture taking experiences. Campers will learn the basics from how to use the camera to the advanced elements of good composition & lighting. We ll introduce some fun, traditional techniques & a variety of exposure techniques to create unique images. *Campers must bring their own digital camera. 4 DRAWING & PAINTING I nsect M ania Week 1, June (Ages 5½ to 8) Campers will create beautiful art from drawing & painting various six and eight legged bugs and insects that can be found in our backyard and around the world! EVERYDAY THINGS Week 1, June (Ages 8 to 14) This camp will find inspiration in things that you see every day and objects that fascinate your artistic brain. Campers will discover tools and techniques for drawing and painting still life and 3- dimensional images that you see at home, in your yard, at school or even in the palm of your hand. You ll also create a drawing journal and discover the command and freedom you will achieve in your own art work. PAINT PAINT PAINT Week 2, June Back by popular demand! Paint, Paint, Paint is a week filled with brushes & color! We ll create our own paintings modeling different 19th and 20th century art movements such as Abstract, Expressionism, Surrealism, Pop Art and Collage. Some artists we will emulate include: Da Vinci, Picasso, Andy Warhol, Van Gogh & Matisse. UNDER THE SEA Week 4, July 9-13 (Ages 5½ to 8) From the foamy surface to the darkest depths campers will explore and create images of marine life and other unusual scenes from the world s vast oceans. This camp will utilize a variety of drawing and painting mediums. Camp Schedule of Ages 5½ to 8: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Ages 8 to 14: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. INTO THE WILD Week 4, July 9-13 (Ages 8 to 14) Explore, draw, paint & learn about a wide variety of animals from around the globe. In addition, more advanced techniques will be introduced emphasizing color, texture and gesture. MOVIE MADNESS Week 6, July Campers will choose form several of 2012 s most popular movie character sand turn them into creative drawings and paintings. Characters will be chosen from age appropriate films such as Rango, Rio, The Lorax, The Avengers, Puss in Boots, Tin Tin, Madagascar III, The Pirates Band of Misfits, The Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and much more! SCENE PAINTING Week 7, July 30 - Aug. 3 Anything that our eyes see can be broken down into some kind of line or shape, whether it s a baseball on the floor in the corner of the garage, or a stop sign on a street corner. Any color that you see when you gaze at rolling foothills and mountains can be mixed with a brush and painted on canvas. This camp will explore a variety or techniques in acrylic paints, watercolor, oil pastel and more, while creating outdoor scenes and vistas, while learning to SEE with your paint brush. BATIK PAINTING Using the ancient Indian method of painting with hot wax & fabric dye, we ll create items such as: paintings for framing, wall tapestries and wall hangings, pillows, t-shirts, tote bags, and more! Bold color, wild imagination, and laughter will fuel our creativity. Week 3, July 2-6 *no camp 7/4 Ages 5½ to 8: From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Ages 8 to 14: From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Week 9, August Ages 8 to 14: From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. CARTOONING Week 10, Aug This camp will teach kids how to draw some of their favorite cartoon characters and create some of their own! This camp is a fun and comical way of learning how to draw people, animals and even furniture and buildings! We ll use pen and ink, watercolors, acrylics, markers and more to finish our creations and learn about 3-D and perspective techniques that help give our images a senses of depth and motion. BEST OF SUMMER -ART & CRAFTING- Week 11, Aug (Ages 5½ to 8) This camp we will revisit some of the best art projects from this summer! We ll spend time recreating various fun and exciting projects in painting, drawing, batik, crafting, and papier-mâché. MANGA & ANIME Week 11, Aug (Ages 8 to 14) Draw and paint popular Anime and Manga characters from TV and comics. Learn about the different styles and techniques for creating heroes and villains up close and in motion. You ll go through the different steps that professional artists use to create finished renderings: tone and shading techniques to create depth and dimension; motion lines and gesture techniques to create the illusion of movement plus, tools so you can start creating your own characters.

5 SINGING CAMP Singing games, improv, vocal exercises, and theatre games are the order of the day. Kids perform songs in front of each other, in small groups or solo. Our goal is to expand each child s self-confidence and expressive ability by combining music, vocal technique, and fun, noncompetitive games. Wk 3, July 2-6 (no camp 7/4) Wk 7, July 30 - Aug 3 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. AGES 5½ to 8 only. VOCAL TECHNIQUES Kids will have fun as they learn how to belt out a tune with vocal technique, confidence and performance savvy! This class combines improv, singing games, movement, & traditional vocal techniques to explore & develop the young singer s voice, encourage their love for singing, build confidence in musical styles & enhance vocal performance. Week 3, July 2-6 (no camp 7/4) Wk 7, July 30 - Aug 3 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. AGES 8 to 14 only. IMPROV CAMP Performance games, physical & vocal theater games, and improvisation are combined in a week long camp for kids to engage their dramatic and comedic brains. Kids experience performing in front of each other in small groups or all by themselves. Our improv camp is designed to develop a student s self confidence, expressive ability in front of others & ultimately to create and develop characters by combining fun theater techniques for body & brain with the chance to play, play, play! Improv allows the player to express themselves & perform knowing that mistakes are good! Making mistakes is a performer s #1 tool in improv; it fosters an environment of endless creativity, confidence with others and an enormous amount of fun! BEADING Campers will discover the art of making their very own jewelry! During five fun-filled days at camp, we focus on a variety of techniques to complete several specially chosen projects such as charms, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings and jewelry boxes! *Cost includes all supplies. For campers ages 7 to 14. Week 4: July 9-13, 9 AM to 12 PM or 1 PM to 4 PM Week 6: July 23-27, 1 PM to 4 PM Wk 5 July & Wk 8 August 6-10 Ages 5½ to 8: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Ages 8 to 14: 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. CRAFTING In crafting camp, kids will learn techniques such as: candle making, tie-dying, macrame, decoupage, ribbon art, tile mosaics & more! Campers will take home some very cool projects! Week 5: July AM to 12 PM: Ages 5½ PM to 4 PM: Ages 8-14 Week 9: August AM to 12 PM: Ages 5½ - 8 Papier-mâché This camp is all about whimsical animal structures inspired by artisans from the Oaxaca region in southern Mexico. Campers will recreate these sculptures in three-dimensional form through papier-mâché! They will build the framework, add the papier-mâché, and then add the colorful details! Week 8: August 6-10 Week 10: August Ages 8-14, 9 AM - 12 PM

6 BROADCAST NEWS Campers will begin their news week by writing and story boarding a 45 minute news program including local and international events, sports reports, editorial and opinion pieces, man-on-the-street interviews and even commercial spots. Each camper will participate in all the aspects of Broadcast News including lighting, sound & video editing, and green screen & post editing. Students will explore a multitude of media topics such as voice training, interview techniques, on camera image training, teleprompter instruction and much more. Improv & theatre techniques will be explored to help develop skills with anchor personalities, interviewing, on-camera presentation & creating man-on-the-street interviews. By the end of the week, campers will have produced a 45 minute news broadcast video which will be premiered Friday at 3:30 pm at Open Arts Studio for family and friends. Each student will receive a finished copy of their Broadcast News video. Week 9: August AGES 9 to 14. $ *This is an all day camp, please send your camper with a sack lunch. Open Arts Studio offers group music lessons for children ages 5 and up. We offer lessons in Piano, Guitar, Flute, Violin, Saxophone, Trumpet, & Clarinet! Group lessons are held once per week, for eight consecutive weeks (we make accommodations for vacations!). Immerse your child in music by signing up for our Blast Off music week! $25.00 will reserve your child a spot in a group lesson, that will meet for an hour every day, September 10th through the 14th. We are offering Blast Off lessons in Piano, Guitar, Violin, Clarinet, Flute, Trumpet, and Saxophone.
