Nanton Hands Over Dirty Water Sample to USA-PA PERTH AMBOY - At the request of Councilwoman Lisa Nanton 3 representatives from USA-PA spoke before the Council at the 11/24/14 Caucus Meeting to give their annual report. Former B.A. Greg Fehrenbach was on hand. He was instrumental in helping the City negotiate a deal with Middlesex Water to bring down the debt incurred by the previous administration. Representatives from Middlesex Water included Dennis W. Doll, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Richard Risoldi, Vice President and COO, Middlesex Water Company, and A. Bruce O Connor, Vice President, Controller and Chief Financial Officer. Risoldi fielded most of the questions asked by Councilwoman Nanton. He said, There are curbed boxes that allows us to shut off valves to each customer. We receive about 4 to 5 complaints a month in reference to low pressure. Nanton was concerned about the southern section of town. She stated, Minerals and PERTH AMBOY - Several Speakers came before the Council on the 11/24/14 portion of the Regular Meeting. They were concerned that the City has in their employment Nancy Martin (Head of the Tax Department) who is also the Mayor of Helmetta. The management of the animal shelter in Helmetta has recently been under attack for deplorable conditions. Local Businesswoman Wilma Matey commented on the situation, I was concerned about Martin working here after the allegations against her in Helmetta. Matey stated, Martin s son has four positions in Helmetta. It concerns me that we are not bringing credible Councilwoman Lisa Nanton irons are in our water. With this said, she showed a representative a jar of murky water and stated, This was filtered out from the line that comes into my house. Risoldi responded, We take samplings of water from 17 commercial sites throughout the town. Nanton handed him the jar. Risoldi said they would take it for analysis. Former B.A. Greg Fehrenbach said, In 2008 we were in debt to Middlesex Water or USA-PA from the previous administration. We satisfied $5 million of that debt in There was a shortfall in year They Want Her Out! COMPLIMENTARY UP TO 10 COPIES/$1 EACH ADDITIONAL Former B.A. Greg Fehrenbach one. O Connor noted, The City is current with their payments. In reference to the water, they (the minerals) come from the pipes itself and not from the plant. The flushing that we do gets the larger particles out of the pipes. We flush the system every October. Fehrenbach said, Some 4 inch lines will be replaced by new 8 inch piping lines. Risoldi said, There will be cement water-lining which will cut down on the iron. An evaluation of where we need to put the new 8 inch pipes will be done. people here. How embarrassing! She s a Mayor and she does not have the right character! If you don t care about living, breathing animals you don t care about anything. Toms River Resident Amber Yehle who is an Animal Rights Activist said, Martin fought tooth and nail to hide animal atrocities and the record keeping at the shelter was horrible. You may want to open and check your books. She said, Google Martin s name and see what you come up with. Nancy brought in Richard and Michal Cielesz who had a high euthanization population. They do not have a license to do that. Perth Amboy Resident Catherine Soto said, I am formerly from New York and I chose Perth Amboy to live in. I sent out an OPRA request about Nancy Martin in reference to her license which expired in The OPRA request came back with her last license was in This is corruption. She should be relieved of her job (in Perth Amboy). She is a disgrace to Helmetta. Is this what we want in our City? I m not afraid to get arrested. Another speaker came before you to offer her services (tax collector) for free. We have the best animal shelter in Perth Amboy. Council President Joel Pabon said, The Council will look into this. Beach Club Redevelopment Ordinance Introduced By: Joseph L. Kuchie SOUTH AMBOY - The ordinance adopting the Beach Club District Redevelopment Plan was introduced at the 12/3/14 South Amboy Business Meeting. The Manhattan Beach Club would bring nearly 1,750 luxury units as well as close to 90 affordable housing units and space for commercial use to South Amboy. While residents have questioned the plan since it was introduced by the South Amboy Redevelopment Agency, Mayor Fred Henry was very excited for the project to get moving. We re taking the first step in redeveloping our waterfront area, Henry said. It is a very good project that is going to transform South Amboy There is still a lot of work to be done but we will continue doing it. Henry added that the ordinance is up on first reading and that there will be a second reading later which will allow the public to comment and ask questions to the council. He also noted the recommendations and discussion that has Pearl Harbor Day December 7, 1941 already come about the project. Construction would begin in 2015 with up to 300 units being added. The Manhattan Beach Club presentation is available for viewing on the city s website on the SARA page. Business Administrator Camille Tooker also discussed details on the re-examination of the city s Master Plan. The Master Plan is the planning framework that shapes the city s physical, social, environmental, and economic future. The Master Plan should be re-examined every 10 years the last time it was done was in 2004, Tooker said. We would like to begin the process of looking to bring someone in and re-examine the master plan. Councilwoman Christine Noble filled in for Council President Joseph Connors who was not in attendance. All other council members were present for the business meeting. Mr. Spock: Practical, Captain? Perhaps. But not desirable. Computers make excellent and efficient servants; but I have no wish to serve under them. From the Star Trek Episode, The Ultimate Computer Airdate March 8,1968. Even in the late 50 s and early 60 s the concept of computers ruling man was imbedded our literature, movies, and TV programs. With the holiday season upon us, many parents are interested in purchasing items as newer laptops, towers, gaming systems, I-Pads, Pads and drones which are hot items, especially this year. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Perhaps a little of both. Just like in marriage, one takes the good with the bad. It s a package deal. The same goes with technology. With primitive robots, such as the mini vacuum cleaners, delivery systems for some offices and drones on the football fields, one must think that the science fiction of the past becoming science fact of today. Now more than ever, man is becoming more and more dependent on machines. Children are able to experience swimming, skiing and other sports such as track and baseball through virtual gaming systems. They don t even need to leave their house. Parents don t even need to go shopping anymore in malls or department stores. They shop online. Even groceries can be ordered online and delivered at your door. Exotic foods such as meats and fruits from halfway around the world are at ones fingertips. (For example: one can order lion meat on certain websites.) There was an interview conducted in England in the late 1970 s with the late author, Published by Amboy Guardian LLC P. O. Look at the internet, using Skype one can communicate with people all over the world face to face. There are also dependencies from computers. Walking into a bookstore or library, there s nothing like seeing, touching and smelling books. For now, most books are printed on paper in the traditional way and digitized. In times to come, the massive bulkiness of books will be lost and replaced by Kindlelike Pads. One could have the whole Library of Congress on an 8 Terabyte hard drive. Records and CD s are going the way of dinosaurs. Regardless of purists who insist the recording on records are far superior over digital media, the future is all digital. On I-Pads or cell phones, one can download music, books, movies and old TV shows for their own entertainment. VCR s and DVD players are on their way out. Imagine life today without your cell phone? Or even waiting in line at the checkout register in your local supermarket with old fashioned manual cash registers? Just imagine what would happen if there s a power outage in the Supermarket? Just like when Superstorm Sandy hit us. So what is the future for mankind on Earth? Remember a novel and a movie titled: Colossus. Colossus was both a book and a movie which talked about how a supercomputer recognized the existence of another of its kind halfway across the world and decided to merge. Then, They decided to rule the world, and to make LOCAL PERSPECTIVE School Yesterday and Today I used to go to a school just two blocks from my house. The building is still there, so the school is over one hundred years old. The grades in my school were K through 6. Three of our subjects were Reading, Writing and Spelling. Don t like to brag, but put me in a spelling contest and you were looking at a winner. We had a newspaper day once a week and each kid would bring in a newspaper and read his favorite article. This was my favorite day. We used to get the Perth Amboy Evening News delivered to our house six days a week and on Sunday my Father would get the NY THE COMMUNITY VOICE Times and The Daily News on the way home from church. My mom liked the Daily News and I loved the comics from Dick Tracy and read all the way to the last page. Every neighbor got a newspaper back then. We even had a magazine rack. I can still see it now. It was wooden with four legs. Had two sides - one side was for magazines like LIFE and LOOK and the other side was for newspapers. The number of homes in my two blocks used to be twelve. There was a newspaper in their mailbox every day. There are double that number of homes in the same area. About four of those homes get a newspaper. I really believe that newspapers taught me to read. The years have passed and I see a different scene. People are on cell phones, have plugs in their ears for , dot com or whatever. They have in their backpack or shoulder bag. They are totally in a trance. Once they get home, it s on the computer again and then the TV. Some people tell me that the newspaper and books are obsolete. Didn t a guy named Adolph Hitler have ideas like that before WWII? Cell phones, computers and TVs are great, but you are missing the boat if you don t have a newspaper in the house. Yes, my friends, a house is not a home without a newspaper in it. 6 6. The Amboy Guardian * December 10, 2014 Input From Hundreds of Residents And Kids Informs Concept Design For 2 nd Street Community Park in Perth Amboy Press Release 12/5/14 PERTH AMBOY- Over the past six months, a team of planners and landscape architects from Rutgers University have been working with the City of Perth Amboy and the Middlesex County Improvement Authority to develop a concept plan for a new park planned for a now vacant property on 2nd Street across from the Wilentz Elementary School. The Rutgers team surveyed residents, conducted workshops with elementary, middle school and high school students and held two public open house meetings at the Brighton Avenue Community Center. The final concept design for the new park, which will be presented to City officials on December 8th and the public on December 11th, incorporates many of the ideas shared by hundreds of residents throughout the design process. We listened to residents and developed a concept that brings together recreation spaces for things like skateboarding and handball, open space for unstructured active play and space for community gardens, festivals and even open air movie nights, said Wolfram Hoefer, Assistant Professor at Rutgers Center for Urban Environmental Sustainability, who headed up the design team. Since we initiated the Mayor s Wellness Campaign in Perth Amboy several years ago, we re serving everyone from our active seniors to our children. Our City will see over $2 million dollars in grant funds invested in park improvements along the entire waterfront area. These new facilities and the future 2nd Street Park will not only maximize underutilized property and beautify neighborhoods, they are initiatives that keep our community healthy. I want to thank our residents and local organizations for their input and feedback, said Mayor Wilda Diaz. The Middlesex County Improvement Authority received a grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency to advise the City on environmental issues, perform site testing and plan the process for cleaning up the former Harry S. Goldberg Scrap Metal Yard, a six-acre Brownfield site on Second Street stretching from Paterson Street to the Raritan River waterfront. Once clean-up of the site is complete, the property will become the new home for Perth Amboy s 2nd Street Community Park. Annie Hindenlang with the City s Office of Economic and Community Development and Perth Amboy Redevelopment Agency noted that, The former Goldberg and Sons site has been an eyesore for the surrounding community and the City s beautiful waterfront for almost 20 years. With the assistance of the Middlesex County Improvement Authority and Rutgers University, the City has made significant progress in moving the environmental cleanup forward and establishing a plan for reuse that truly meets the needs of the surrounding neighborhood. The new waterfront park will become a great attraction and resource for the community as a whole. A final community outreach open house meeting will be held at the Brighton Avenue Community Center, 56 Brighton Avenue on Thursday, December 11, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Residents will be able to view the final concept design for the park and speak with members of the Rutgers design team, City officials and Middlesex County Improvement Authority about the design and next steps in the process to complete the park. In addition to the Open House, the Rutgers team will also present the final park design to the Perth Amboy City Council at their Caucus Meeting at 4:30 pm on Monday, December 8 in the Council Chambers. Both meetings are open to the public. We will be off Christmas Week Please send your Holiday Events no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, December 12, Tsunami Swim Team Holds Its First Meet By: Katherine Massopust PERTH AMBOY On Saturday, December 6, 2014 the Tsunami Swim Team of the Perth Amboy YMCA competed in their first swim meet against Princeton. This marks the first swim meet from a Perth Amboy YMCA Swim Team in over 20 years. With so many swimmers enrolled in the YMCA s swim lessons, the swimmers had no outlet to compete using their skills. We have such an awesome facility that we had to have a swim team, states Meredith Lyndon, one of 3 cocoaches of the Tsunami Swim Team. Along with Samantha Burd and Johanna Safranski, Lyndon helps develop the proper skills for the swimmers to compete. We focus a lot on teaching, states Lyndon. The Raritan Bay YMCA began its Tsunami Swim Team last year. There are 3 levels of swim lessons at the Perth Amboy YMCA. Once all 3 levels are completed, the swimmer is eligible to try out for the Tsunami Swim Team. There are 32 members of the Tsunami Swim Team. The ages Members of the Tsunami Swim Team compete against Princeton *Photos by Katherine Massopust Jewish Renaissance Medical Center and United Way Work for a Healthier Central Jersey News Release SOUTH AMBOY - The Jewish Renaissance Medical Center (JRMC) and United Way of Central Jersey (UWCJ) will launch an incremental campaign to promote the importance of primary and preventative care; and the access of a medical home. JRMC s mobile medical command unit will function as the primary mechanism to articulate this campaign. JRMC will deploy the mobile unit to reach target municipalities and subpopulations that UWCJ and JRMC deem as underserved. The campaign will be organized to provide free medical and dental screenings, as well as, patient navigation sessions. Where: 140 North Broadway, South Amboy NJ behind City Hall When: Saturday, December 13, 2014 from 10:00am to 2:00pm What: Free Medical and Dental Screenings & Patient Navigation Gloria Aftanski, President of United Way, said recently, Good health is an essential ingredient for individual success and a thriving community. Healthy children are more likely to succeed in school. The whole community will flourish when all of our residents have access to public parks, playgrounds, healthy foods and quality healthcare. We are committed to more than short-term charity for a few; we are committed to lasting solutions that build opportunity for all. By targeting under-served populations which demonstrate poor self-care by not seeing a medical provider on of the swimmers vary from 7 to 17. The team practices on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. They deserve to compete. 2 of our swimmers are autistic. They also swim in the Special Olympics, states Safranski. There are some swimmers who swam last year for the Tsuanmi Swim Team. Safranski states. There are different levels of competition. We hope in the future to become a USA Team. This would make the Tsunami Swim Team eligible for invitationals and open more doors. Meredith Lyndon spoke of her own experience competing, It s a lifetime sport. I started competing at age 8 until high school. Then I didn t compete for 36 years. Now I m in the Master s Swimmer Program. Swimming is something that these kids will be able to do their whole life. When asked the importance of learning to swim, Lyndon answered, We are surrounded by water (in Perth Amboy). It s important (if something happened) they won t drown. Swimming builds discipline and cooperation, states Johanna Safranski, One focuses on bettering the team by bettering themselves. You also make lifelong friends. Lyndon stated, Some of the swimmers skills are better than others. We pick one of the strokes (Competitive Strokes: Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke & Freestyle) that a swimmer likes to do, emphasize it, then pick another, and work on that, too. For their first swim meet, (last year the team only practiced and developed their skills with no formal competition) the Coaches of Tsunami Swim Team are focusing on developing skills, cutting times and getting the swimmers used to competing. It takes years to build a team, states Lyndon. Swimming is a sport for anyone, any shape and size. Citing why she coaches, Lyndon states, I was gifted with terrific coaches growing up and I want to give back what they gave me. The Tsunami Swim Team has another meet on Saturday, December 20, Congratulations, on a job well done. a regular basis and who may not view preventive care as essential we seek to achieve measurable improvement in the following: 1. Lack of or inconsistent medical home where many of our participants will not have a regular primary care provider. 2. Substandard health conditions where most of our participants will present with chronic illness, including many cases of severe acute medical, behavioral and/or developmental disorders. 3. Certain cultural attitudes and characteristics of populations of color adversely impede the pursuit of health treatment. 4. Need for enabling supports that impact their healthcare conditions, particularly housing, transportation and addiction treatment.

The Amboy Guardian * December 10, 2014 Santa Fly-in Press Release PRINCETON - Thirty-nine years ago, the idea of having Santa fly into the Princeton Airport for the area children to watch was brought to life. Throughout the years, this has evolved into a wonderful annual event for families and those less fortunate. The tradition will continue this year on Tuesday, December 24th, when the Nierenberg family, owners of the airport, will open the hangar doors to children awaiting Santa s arrival. Santa is planned to arrive at 11:00 A.M. Parents are advised to bring the children prior to then, as the Princeton Airport Flying Tigers will be serving cocoa and cookies, and local folk singer Pat McKinley will be leading the audience in holiday songs during the wait for Santa. If parents would like to have a gift waiting for their child, they should bring a wrapped gift with the child s name on it in large print to the Princeton Airport lobby. Gifts should be no larger than 12 to accommodate Santa. (Deadline Dec. 16 th )If parents have more than one child participating, the gifts should be wrapped in the same paper and tied together to speed up the distribution. Also, to have their child participate, parents need to bring a gift for the less fortunate as well. This is the most important feature of this event. These gifts must be new and unwrapped, and will be collected by the Mercer County Board of Social Services. Personal checks made out to the FoodBank Network of Somerset County, as well as canned or boxed food will also be collected at the airport. Donations from non-participants are kindly accepted as well. The collection of the gifts will begin the day after Thanksgiving and will end on December 16th in order to enable county workers to arrange the best matches for the needy. The gifts can be deposited in the chimneys in the lobby of the airport between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Once Santa s plane lands, he will head into the hangar, along with all the participants, to distribute each gift individually. In fairness to all, Santa will distribute the gifts in the order in which they are received at the airport. Children will also have the opportunity to take a picture on Santa s lap. Usually, distribution is completed by 1:00 P.M. and Santa continues his journey. There is no charge for this event. The Princeton Airport is located in Montgomery Township, 3.5 miles north of Princeton on Route 206. 17 December 10, 2014 * The Amboy Guardian.17 Novena to St. Rita O holy protectress of those who art in greatest need, thou who shineth as a star of hope in the midst of darkness, blessed Saint Rita, bright mirror of God s grace, in patience and fortitude thou art a model of all the states in life. I unite my will with the will of God through the merits of my Savior Jesus Christ, and in particular through his patient wearing of the crown of thorns, which with tender devotion thou didst daily contemplate. Through the merits of the holy Virgin Mary and thine own graces and virtues, I ask thee to obtain my earnest petition, provided it be for the greater glory of God and my own sanctification. Guide and purify my intention, O holy protectress and advocate, so that I may obtain the pardon of all my sins and the grace to persevere daily, as thou didst in walking with courage, generosity, and fidelity down the path of life.
