2 Compton Verney ART GALLERY AND PARK Where art meets nature... Autumn 2017 For the latest information visit The national media acclaim we received over summer demonstrated just how well we stage exhibitions. (The Sunday Times described our summer show as A dazzling exhibition that sets the standard for how all shows should be done.) And this autumn is no exception, with Compton Verney offering not one but two outstanding exhibitions the Quentin Blake retrospective Inside Stories alongside Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris The Lost Words accompanied by a wide range of events and activities. In addition, this October we focus on the Jane Austen bicentenary and on our marvellous Chinese collection in China Revealed. At the end of the month we reprise 2016 s fabulous In-Light display in the park a superbly imaginative project which has now been guaranteed Arts Council National Portfolio funding for four years from Added to that, we have our celebrated Textile Fair in November and our famous Winter Weekends in December. 6 A vision of the future Until 17 Dec 2017 The Clearing is a collaborative artwork by artists Alex Hartley and Tom James, which aims to build a vision of an uncertain future in the grounds of Compton Verney. Designed to grow and evolve over the course of the year, The Clearing now includes one geodesic dome, a cob oven, one shelf of mead and a chicken coop; and has been home to 34 caretakers, one baby, and five extremely curious chickens! Come and join us for our final workshops, as we experiment with the more advanced technologies and concepts we don t want to leave behind once the world ends. For workshops please bring along warm clothes, stout footwear, some tissues or a hanky, and food to share for lunch or dinner. Suitable for children aged 10+ Adult 10 Child 5 Price is per workshop and includes entry to the Park only. BOOK NOW! The Clearing Workshops Learn the skills you need to survive in a world affected by climate change. Listen to the Radio Sat 21 Oct, 11am - 4pm In a post-crash society, how can we keep communicating with each other? One answer might be radio. In this workshop, we ll be making a fox-hole radio from easily scavenged materials (bring your own wire), and learn the basics of radio physics. We ll also be talking about how to transmit, and whether we ll ever be able to listen to Abba Gold ever again. Rebuilding Democracy Sun 5 Nov, 11am - 6pm Will life after the crash be nasty, brutal and short? This special, extended workshop will bring together a number of rapid fire workshops, from feminism in the future to community self-defence, to teach you how to rebuild and defend democracy. We ll end with a bonfire, to celebrate the continued survival of British democracy, and burn some home-made Guys. Astronomy for Survivors Sat 25 Nov, 2pm - 7pm This workshop is an attempt to introduce the rest of the universe to The Clearing. We ll learn how to navigate from the night sky, how to identify the constellations, and how telescopes work. And we ll wonder aloud about whether we ll get there. How to Die in the Future Sat 2 Dec, 11am - 4pm Whenever you think about climate change, you very quickly get to some fundamental questions. What is our role, here on Earth? How should we live? Should we live in harmony with the planet? This final workshop aims to provide a bit of space to talk about these questions. We ll be joined by some special guests including representatives from Birmingham s You Only Die Once collective, who ll also give us some guidance on the practicalities of our departure, now and in the world to come. Featuring many of Ravilious key works, this exhibition focuses on moments when the lives, work and careers of this group of contemporaries coincided, such as their time at the Royal College of Art, London, time spent at Furlongs and Newhaven in Sussex, and their various roles in the Second World War. Curated by Andy Friend and the Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne. FREE entry for Members. Group Bookings now being taken. Contact Emily on Eric Ravilious, The Greenhouse: Cyclamen and Tomatoes, Presented by Sir Geoffrey and Hon. Lady Fry in memory of the artist Tate, London Created in Conflict: British Soldier Art from the Crimean War to Today Sat 17 March Sun 10 June Explore the subject of creativity in conflict featuring artwork made by British Armed Forces personnel from the Crimean War to the present day. Those at war have long used art as one way of staying in touch with home and sharing at least part of the experience of war with loved ones. This insightful exhibition will showcase the incredible diversity, resourcefulness and beauty of art produced in war time, including work made by soldiers in the trenches during WWI, handmade patchwork quilts from uniforms, oil paintings depicting the arrival of parcels from home during the Crimean War, and toys produced by convalescing soldiers. Art made by military personnel could also be used for propaganda purposes, and Created In Conflict: British Soldier Art from the Crimean War to Today considers the unsettling effects of such objects which can make us feel both better and worse about war. The exhibition will also feature creative collaborations between veterans and contemporary artists. Created in partnership with the University of Cardiff and the National Army Museum.
