Fe CPPG PENCIL POINTS VOLUME 6 Issue 3 1 CPPG Pencil Points MARCH 2017: THE VILLAGES, FLORIDA VOLUME 6 / ISSUE 3 Message from the President Our Fifth Annual Jubilee Show and Sale is right around the corner. SPREAD THE WORD to your friends, neighbors, family, etc. Thanks to everyone s generosity for all the donated raffles and door prizes. The Jubilee Committee is working very hard - it looks like it will be an amazing event. We had a wonderful February meeting with Melissa Miller Nece, President of CPSA. She discussed many topics including the Colored Pencil Society and Miniature Art Exhibits. Melissa brought many of her paintings, and she shared her techniques and ideas. Many members joined her at Arnold Palmer Country Club for a tasty lunch. The March meeting will be the Emerging Artists Exhibit which is always exciting. Also, the Swap Table will be set up. Bring in any art items you would like to sell or give away and place them on the table at the back of the room by 9:00 a.m. Whatever items do not sell, you must take back home with you. The Bok Tower Gardens bus trip on March 13 is a go. Have your cameras ready! It is a great opportunity for some wonderful photos. It will be a lot of fun. Don t forget to keep working on your paintings. Bring your creations to the round table critiques at the April meeting. This is a don t miss opportunity. It is that time of year for membership renewal, and we have a full membership. Once again, say Hi to someone you don t know at the next meeting- -- you might find a friend. Happy Saint Patrick s Day to all! Amy

CPPG PENCIL POINTS VOLUME 6 Issue 3 2 Melissa Miller Nece, president of CPSA, covered everything from the use of primary colors to types of paper and pencils as CPPG members learned many new techniques from her presentation at the February meeting. Melissa s enthusiasm and examples of her beautiful work inspired Guild members. Sharing her beautiful artwork and witty T- shirt with Amy Ottilige and the Guild members.

CPPG PENCIL POINTS VOLUME 6 Issue 3 Beautiful examples of Melissa s work encourage CPPG members to try new techniques and ideas in artwork. Melissa also presented the intriguing idea of doing work in miniatures. A new challenge for colored pencil work. A large crowd enjoyed the February meeting. 3

CPPG PENCIL POINTS VOLUME 6 Issue 3 4 March 8, 2017: Emerging Artists Exhibit and Swap Table Members who have never shown their work in a Villages show can bring a matted (not necessarily framed) piece and receive constructive feedback from member artist instructors. See details elsewhere in this newsletter. In addition, if you have art supplies or materials that you are no longer using, bring them to the meeting for the Swap Table. Here s how it works. We ll have a table set up behind the seating area where you can place art items you d like to sell and/or give away. Be sure to put your name and the price (if relevant) on each item you bring in. Other members will check out items offered and deal directly with you to buy them; you keep all proceeds. You are also responsible for removing any of your items that are not purchased or taken. April 12, 2017: Round Table Critiques Bring your work-in-progress or finished pieces to the April meeting for our Round Table Critiques We will have eight tables with member artist instructors ready to offer suggestions for improving your work. And, as we ve done in the past, you will have the opportunity to receive feedback from two different critiquers. May10, 2017: Frank Zampardi, Creating Still Lifes In May, Frank Zampardi will talk with us about setting up still life compositions. Need Jubilee Supplies? If you are still in need of plastic sleeves for your cards, I have them for $5.00/100 and a VERY limited number of envelopes at $6.00/100. Give me a call or me. Dawn Mastrodonato gramadawn403@aol.com

CPPG PENCIL POINTS VOLUME 6 Issue 3 5 The 2017/2018 Early Membership Renewal Drive will get under way at the monthly meeting on March 8, and will close on June 30, All current memberships will expire on September 30, By renewing your membership between March 8 and June 30, 2017, you will be extending your membership through September 30, One of the benefits of participating in the Early Membership Renewal Drive is that you will be listed in the 2017/2018 Membership Directory. The urgency of the Early Membership Renewal Drive is only if you wish to be listed in the 2017/2018 Membership Directory. The Membership Committee members take the opportunity of the summer months to work on the upcoming Membership Directory, with a goal of having it ready for distribution at the September 13, 2017, monthly meeting. Renewals and new memberships are accepted year round. Please make your check payable to CPPG in the amount of $ If paying with cash, we would appreciate your having the exact amount. 6 CPPG PENCIL POINTS VOLUME 6 Issue 3 6 Bok Tower Gardens Bus Trip Set for March 13 We are happy to announce we have 47 people signed up for this trip! We will be meeting at Lowe s on 441 at 8:15 a.m. This will give you time to pick up your snack bag and board before the bus leaves at 8:30. Please park toward the back of the Lowes parking lot near Cracker Barrel. We expect to be back at Lowe s at approximately 4:30 p.m. If you have someone picking you up, please have a way of communicating with them in case we are slightly late due to traffic issues. Don t forget a camera! Visit to learn more about the gardens. If you have any questions please contact Diane Dumas at ddumas151@verizon.net or Another Suggested Book for Art-Loving Readers I haven t finished this book yet, but I couldn t wait to tell you about it. This is a non-fiction book that truly reads like a wonderful mystery novel. The language of the book grabs you in the first five pages, and remains wonderfully poetic as the story takes you to Spain, England, and places in between. It travels through history, and yet is applicable to modern ideas of art and art provenance. If you are not aware of the beauty of Velazquez s art, this is a great place to start. The detective work behind establishing the history of a piece of art, and even determining the correct name of the artist is remarkable. Did you know that artists did not give titles to paintings until the 1800 s? Before that a picture would be referred to with identifiers like, a painting of a man in black. If you enjoy a good real-life mystery and beautiful writing, this book is for you. If anyone has an art-related book to share, please let me know. Jane Routte, Editor routtejane88@gmail.com

CPPG PENCIL POINTS VOLUME 6 Issue 3 7 When you are working on your painting, remember to turn the work upside down for assessing your progress. Place it several feet away from you to view it. Leave it overnight and review it the next day! This is an important way to critique your art work. Your brain is confused by the image and will not recognize your work, although your "eyes" still are sending the message of what your brain should be seeing! Now you will "see" the areas that still need more work. You will notice color values. You will notice contrast areas. You will notice composition or size and shape changes, thus enabling you to correct your work. This is a mandatory practice! Contributed by Doreé Voychick If you want to volunteer to help out, call Carol Swart. The following two pages contain information about available colored pencil art classes by Pam.
