26 Don t Worry, the Money s in the Milk Can Written by Dave Simpson, former editor of the North Platte Telegraph I got a call from my old pal the farmer the other day and back in his part of the Midwest they re up to their eyebrows in corn this year. He said they re getting consistent yields of 200 bushels per acre, which is the best he s ever seen. And at 2, he s a semi-coot, not unlike myself, with an AARP card in his wallet. So the best he s ever seen actually means something. But, the reported word of the good yields quickly made its way to Chicago, and at least temporarily the price of corn dropped. That s the thing about farming good news can quickly turn into bad news. When you ve got a lot to sell, the market usually isn t very good for what you ve got. But if you haven t got much to sell, you could have made a nice profit on what you haven t got to sell. I always tell this guy, Cheer up, maybe things will get worse. But, if the drought was bad enough in Iowa, that could make corn prices go up again, and that would be good news for my old pal. Except he wouldn t wish that on the farmers in Iowa. The bad news is he says his soybeans don t look good this year, which could end up being good news if it makes the price go up. Except well, you see how it works. (I think I ll stay in the newspaper business). So anyway, he told me a great story about buying a new corn head for his combine. Two years ago, he and his dad and his brother bought a new combine a pretty expensive proposition. And this year they decided they needed a new corn head, a device that snorts up the corn plants and feeds them into the combine and costs $29,000. A young salesmen came out from an implement dealership in a nearby town and they worked out a deal with the old corn head in trade. Later that day, a fax arrived at the farm, spelling out their terms of the deal. My friend and his father and his brother agreed to the deal, they signed it and faxed it back to the dealership. All this was going on this summer and the piece of equipment was actually manufactured in late August. So, with the harvest looming they wanted it at the farm in time. A couple of weeks after they made the agreement, the salesman faxed them saying that he needed a $,000 down payment on the corn head and to please send it to them. But, my old pal hadn t agreed to a $,000 down payment. He and his dad and his brother were kind of amused by this development, but they didn t respond to the fax. A couple more weeks went by, and they received another fax from the salesman reminding them that he needed $,000 right away. They laughed again and didn t answer the fax either. And then the young salesman left an urgent phone message saying he really hoped that the check was in the mail because he needed it right away. And they didn t answer that call either. Finally, they got a call that the corn head had arrived. And the father told the young salesman who was so worried about the down payment that they would be coming to the dealership to pick it up, and we ll have the milk can with us. The salesman didn t understand what that meant, but they set up a time to pick up the corn head. And when they sat down to pay, the father told the salesman the story about the milk can. It seems two farmer brothers were buying a neighboring farm to add to their place. When it came time for the closing the seller asked how they intended to pay for the property. They said cash and went out to their beat up truck and got a dented, dirty old milk can that was stuffed with bills. They had the attorney count the money in the milk can and suddenly he looked up in surprise. Wait a minute, he said, there s too much money in this milk can. And one brother turned to the other and said: I TOLD you we dug up the wrong milk can! The eager young implement salesman got the message as the father wrote out a check for the corn head minus the trade-in. The salesman shouldn t have worried about getting a deposit because he had something much more valuable than a $,000 deposit: A deal with people who stand by their commitments. I asked my friend if, with the harvest looming, he was ever tempted to just send in the $,000 to make sure they had the new equipment on hand for the harvest. After all, they would have to pay the $,000 anyway. There was a long pause, which told me that of course they never considered such a thing. We d given our word on the deal, he said. Simple as that. He was a son of B/R New Day 44. His dam was sired by B/R Future Direction 620 and his grandam was sired by.
