3 1. Cut out the lab safety rules and glue it on page one (left side) of your notebook. 2. Add the title Lab Safety at the top of the page 3. Add the same title to your Index.

4 Rules and Procedures Read the entire lab before you begin and follow all lab instructions exactly as explained by your teacher, There is a zero tolerance policy for any form of horseplay during a lab. If you are unclear about a certain portion of the lab, ask! Any accident, regardless of the severity, must be reported to the teacher immediately.

5 Rules and Procedures Always transport scissors or other sharp objects with the sharp end down; always cut away from yourself during dissection or other lab procedures. Eating and drinking is strictly forbidden during lab; only eat, smell, or taste an item if told to do so by your teacher. Know the location and use of all safety equipment in the lab, which includes: goggles, apron, eye wash, fire blanket, fire extinguisher, & lab shower.

6 Rules and Procedures Report any damaged or broken equipment to your instructor immediately. Check cords and plugs for damage and keep the area dry when working with electrical equipment.

7 Clothing and Safety Equiptment Baggy clothes and long hair must be neatly secured while performing any experiment Safety goggles must be worn when: Working with any form of heat Working with chemicals Working with sharp objects Determined by the teacher

8 Heat Source Attend to heat sources 100% of the time. When heating a substance, use proper equipment and point it away from everyone, Any glassware that is heated should not be immersed in cold water.

9 Chemicals Only mix chemicals in the order described within the lab, Always add acid last. When smelling any chemical or substance, do so by wafting. All chemicals and/or any lab supplies must be accounted for at the completion of the lab. No chemical, item, or specimen should ever leave the lab room. Chemicals splashed on the skin or eyes should be flushed with water for 20 minutes

10 Lab Cleanliness Keep your lab area neat and clean Always dispose of chemicals properly and never return unused portions to the original container. Solid trash should be placed in the trash can; liquid wastes should be placed in the sink with lots of water or other designated disposal area as determined by instructor.

11 Lab Cleanliness All equipment must be thoroughly cleaned at the conclusion of the lab and returned to the assigned area. Wash your hands at the end of each lab.

12 SpongeBob Safety Instructions: 5 scenarios will be placed on each table. Work with your table to determine what rules have been broken for each one, you will need at least three for each scenario. All answers will be recorded in your notebook.

13 Scenario 1 Spongebob, Patrick, and Gary were thrilled when Mr. Krabbs, their teacher, gave them a chemistry set! Mr. Krabbs warned them to be careful and reminded them to follow the safety rules they had learned in science class. The teacher passed out the materials and provided each person with an experiment book. SpongeBob and Gary flipped through the book and decided to test the properties of a mystery substance. Since the teacher did not tell them to wear the safety goggles, they left them on the table. SpongeBob lit the Bunsen burner and then reached across the flame to get a test tube from Gary. In the process, he knocked over a bottle of the mystery substance and a little splashed on Gary.

14 Scenario 2 SpongeBob poured some of the substance into a test tube and began to heat it. When it started to bubble he looked into the test tube to see what was happening and pointed it towards Gary so he could see. Gary thought it smelled weird so he took a deep whiff of it. He didn t think it smelled poisonous and tasted a little bit of the substance. They were worried about running out of time. So they left the test tube and materials on the table and moved to a different station to try another experiment.

15 Scenario 3 Patrick didn t want to waste any time reading the directions, so he put on some safety goggles and picked a couple of different substances. He tested them with vinegar (a weak acid) to see what would happen even though he didn t have permission to experiment on his own. He noticed that one of the substances did not do anything, but the other one fizzed. He also mixed two substances together to see what would happen but didn t notice anything.

16 Scenario 4 Patrick saw SpongeBob and Gary heating something in a test tube and decided to do that test. He ran over to that station and knocked over a couple of bottles that SpongeBob had left open. After cleaning up the spills, he read the directions and found the materials he needed. The only test tube he could find had a small crack in it, but he decided to use it anyway.

18 Scenario 5 Patrick lit the bunsen burner and used tongs to hold the test tube over the flame. He forgot to move his notebook away from the flame and almost caught it on fire. Before they could do another experiment, the bell rang and they rushed to put everything away. Since they didn t have much time, Patrick didn t clean out his test tube before putting it in the cabinet. SpongeBob noticed that he had a small cut on his finger, but decided he didn t have time to tell the teacher about it. Since they were late, they skipped washing their hands and hurried to the next class.
