1 Autumn 2017 Spring 2018

2 Welcome to the season at the Orange Tree Theatre! Did you know? n The Orange Tree is a registered charity (no ) n We ve won 16 major industry awards since 2014 n Less than 50% of our income comes from ticket sales n We need to fundraise 350,000 every year 2 In our extraordinary, up-close space, audiences experience transformative storytelling that both entertains and invites us to examine ourselves and the world around us. This first half of the season features a bumper crop of new plays from Brad Birch, Elinor Cook, Sarah McDonald Hughes, Duncan Macmillan and Lot Vekemans. They are all about life as it s lived now and in particular the strain that society s stresses can put on our most intimate relationships. The rare revivals of plays by David Storey and Bernard Shaw, both receiving their first major London productions in 30 years, also focus on relationships. In Storey s beautiful 1989 play The March on Russia, he offers a touching portrait of a 60-year marriage that has endured despite many strains; Shaw s 1910 play throws up a dizzying array of potential marriages to make us question our class and gender assumptions. EDUCATION & PARTICIPATION are core to the OT s mission WE WORK WITH MORE THAN 10,000 children, young people & over 60s every year to DEVELOP, INSPIRE & ENRICH LIVES is a unique theatrical experience: it s impossible to categorise. By turns immensely touching and utterly hilarious, this is a completely unmissable opportunity to see the first full London run of the worldwide hit starring Jonny Donahoe. We produce and co-produce all our work: this season we are delighted to be collaborating once again with Wizard Presents, Up in Arms and Flute Theatre, and starting new partnerships with Little Angel Theatre in Islington and legendary new writing company Paines Plough. The Extras programme this autumn features the welcome return of Lemn Sissay and Barb Jungr, and first appearances at the OT by Martin Jarvis telling the Just William stories and Mark Lockyer s remarkable one-man play, Living With The Lights On (produced by our friends Actors Touring Company). OT Members contribute 70,000 every year enough to pay the running costs of an entire production PHOTO: BORIS MITKOV/BACKBONE PRODUCTIONS The OT plays a crucial role in the Richmond community and is a vital component of the British theatre ecology. We aim to develop, inspire and enrich through every aspect of our work: from introducing primary school children to Shakespeare (Primary Shakespeare), to working with the next generation of theatre directors (MA in Theatre Directing with St Mary s University); from an artistic programme that shares unusual stories with audiences of all ages, to our Youth Theatre that enables 120 young people every week to explore their own potential in a safe environment. All our supporters are invaluable to us, and at the OT your contribution goes further: we keep costs low through our resourceful producing model which shares costs with co-producers, enabling us to do more make more work, for more people with less. Please consider supporting the Orange Tree today, and help this renowned Richmond theatre to reach new artists, new audiences and new heights. Thank you. We look forward to welcoming you to the Theatre this Season. Ground breaking Shakespeare a unique theatrical experience part performance and part workshop which genuinely puts the sense of play back into Shakespeare and that is truly interactive. Lyn Gardner, The Guardian on The Tempest [My daughter] loved it! She was apprehensive at first but over time, she became involved and her confidence grew. She is still talking about it and describes it as amazing to people she meets. Parent of participant, October FEBRUARY SHAKESPEARE UP CLOSE ALSO ON TOUR TO SCHOOLS 19 FEB 9 MARCH Romeo & Juliet Summer London. A city of extremes divided by wealth and property. A world of postcode street fights, catcalling and bants. In the middle of this a boy gatecrashes a fancy party and falls in love (for at least the second time that week). But this girl is different. She doesn t want to hear his cheesy lines and she s not interested in his moves. A fantastic production, fizzing with tension and energy A really inspiring production, full of feeling and energy. The text was wonderfully articulated by the actors. The students were completely engaged throughout a fantastic experience! From teachers who saw last year s production Up to fifteen children on the spectrum become the participants for each performance, sitting with six actors in a circle on our stage. The children s families or carers sit just behind them to watch from the auditorium. The actors invite the participants to help them unravel Shakespeare s story through sensory games which the children and actors play together. Although the games and the narrative remain the same for each performance, the show is completely different every time depending on the nature of the young people who attend. For ages 10+ The Orange Tree Theatre is wheelchair accessible and the performance is suited to every young person with ASD, including those who are entirely non-verbal. All participants and their families are welcome to join the cast for tea and biscuits after the performance.
