June 2O16 Hello All Thank you, Hanna and her crew (Pam, Sandy and Marcy,) for the ADSO 60th Celebration party and display. We had a great turnout even with competing activities at last Friday s reception. We had two great birthday cakes and lots to eat. What a special time for ADSO and our special guests. Thank you also to Michael Fagan for his wonderful musical entertainment, completing a joyous night. We follow this up with our annual Calendar Show whose theme is Just Say It. The show will be displayed by the time the newsletter appears. As per the last several years, the board will have chosen 20 eligible entries for the calendar. I hope all members will come by and vote on your 13 favorites to appear in Voting will end after the June 29th luncheon. You have extra time this year as the luncheon is the 5th week so as not to conflict with Kids Camp. Now that the cistern is no longer, the board is looking into putting up a privacy fence to close in a larger courtyard. We will also be working on our new storage room. More renovation is needed, and we hope many of you will turn out to help with the work. See you in the gallery. Have a great day! Eric Harris President

Thanks to Marcy! After many years of chairing the Southeast Regional Fine Arts Exhibition, which was hosted by Northwest Florida State College, Marcy Eady is retiring from this demanding position, which consumes enormous amounts of time. Thanks to her expertise in working with artists and the College, and her organizational skills, the show has flourished, attracting top-caliber artists from across the country. The time has now come for her to spend more time concentrating on the own art. Our thanks to Marcy for her dedication to this project for so long a time. At this point, organization of the exhibition will be turned over to the College. Reminder!!! Folks, please don t forget to keep our kitchen areas tidy after use, especially the refrigerators! A quick wipe up of spilled liquids, tossing out or taking home your foods after use-by dates, etc., go a long way to help keep these areas pleasant for all of us who use them! Thank you!!! Hanna Joensuu displays some of her batiks at the ADSO June luncheon Calendar voting time! Pick up your ballot from Sandy in the office and vote by June 29. Be sure to vote for your choice of the calendar pages and cover for It will be a hard choice, as there s a great selection to choose from! Voting ends at the luncheon on June 29. ADSO recognized! ADSO was asked to participate in the Florida-1 State Medical Response Team (SMRT) Disaster Preparedness Expo on April 16, 2016 as a non-profit community agency. Wally Ratcliffe and Jane Helms set up a booth with the ADSO Banner, information about ADSO and some bright and cheerful pieces of art. Tuny Jennings came and offered a few hours of support. ADSO has received a very nice certificate of appreciation and kind words for our participation in the event. We were told that our colorful booth drew many shoppers from Upton Station stores to the event. It also brought many children and parents to our booth to inquire about ADSO programs. Even with the high winds that day, ADSO was well represented and appreciated for their participation. Thanks from Hanna to her 60 th Anniversary Team! A great amount of work and cooperation went into making our 60 th Anniversary Celebration a reality, and a great many thanks are in order! Marcy Eady and Sandy Franks deserve a special thanks; Marcy helped with the selection of the works from the permanent collection; both helped to go through documents from the archives; and Sandy helped with framing. They both provided ENORMOUS assistance! Others who helped in the many necessary jobs were Pam Folse, Jane Helms, Tuny Jennings, Rick Otoupalik, Vonnie Peters, Wally Ratcliffe, Pat Roberts, those who provided treats, and our special musician, Michael Fagan! Thanks to all of them, and of course, to all our guests who made this a most festive occasion!

Starving Artist Thank You Jane Helms Thanks to everyone who participated in this year s Starving Artist Sale! We had a terrific group of artists representing a wide range of items for sale, including pottery, wood, jewelry, photography, fused glass, batik, collage, as well as acrylic, oil, and watercolor paintings. Also, the event helped raise several hundreds of dollars for ADSO, which was another cause for celebration! Kudos to the Starving Artist Working Group: Jane Helms, Tuny Jennings, Wally Ratcliffe, and Carolyn Williams. Also wanted to thank Pat Basque for stepping in to help with the donations table, both pricing and selling. And as always, our thanks to Sandy Franks for keeping track of all the little details! Twisted Grape A shout out to Kat and Bruno Wyndham of The Twisted Grape, who came to the event, and while there, selected a number of pieces of art to be displayed (for sale!) on the walls of their restaurant in Shalimar. If you get a chance, stop by The Twisted Grape and thank them for their support of our ADSO artists. And try some of their excellent food, or just enjoy the ambience. And finally, thanks to the ADSO artists who had tables at the 2016 Starving Artist Sale: Joe Harper, Sherry Cooler, Dorothy Edens, Theresia McGinnis, Bernadette Sims, Hanna Joensuu, Phillip Broyce, Pat Roberts, Wally Ratcliffe, Mike Veal, Wanda Veal, Jane Helms, and members of the Gem and Mineral Society. Signed up, but unable to attend, were Geraldine Brooks and Margaret Bartlett. Rick Otoupalik Goes Pirate, Goes Happy! Congratulations to Rick Otoupalik, whose Pirate Poster was chosen by the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce to be the symbol of this year s Billy Bowlegs Festival! In addition, Rick has designed new signage to give the City a new image it s all about happy! Good job!!! Sneak Preview: Saturdays in the Arts! Linda Kernick, Workshop Chair, is preparing a series of one-day classes to be offered on Saturdays in September and October, by different artists, with a range of media. Stay tuned!

Summer Art Camp: June 20-24; July The Arts and Design Society again offers the opportunity for children to participate in creating visual arts in its summer "Kids' Art Camp." Classes begin on Monday with clay artistry and feature a different medium each day, including drawing, painting, and other media. Each week ends with an art show and reception for the families, during the second half of Friday's class. There are 4 sessions of the camp, organized by age groups. Session 1: Ages 6-8, June 20-24, 9:30-11:30 am; Session 2: Ages 9-13, June 20-24, 1:00-3:00 pm; Session 3: Ages 6-11, July 11-15, 9:30-11:30 am; Session 4: Ages 6-11, July 11-15, 1:00-3:00 pm. The cost for each of the week-long sessions is $70 per child ($60 for the children of ADSO members). Pre-registration is required by Friday, June 17, for June Sessions, and by Friday, July 8, for July Sessions. Classes will be held at the ADSO Art Center, 17 First Street, SE, FWB. For further information or to register, call , or visit Thanks to Our Gallery Sitters! Many thanks go to our May Gallery Sitters, who donated their time to keep open the Gallery on Saturday. Kathleen Simpson, Magda Bussler, Julia Allen, and Tuny Jennings all worked three hours. Without our volunteer sitters, the Gallery would be closed on Saturdays. If you've not spent a Saturday afternoon (1-4) in the Gallery, please consider giving it a try. It's a pleasant way to spend an afternoon--read, work on your art, or do crossword puzzles...and represent ADSO to any visitors. Sometimes it's busy, sometimes, not. You may answer questions, give out ADSO literature, or just smile and say, "Thanks for visiting!" Three hours once in a while isn't a big chunk of time--but it makes a big difference to ADSO. Please sign up! NOTE to Sitters: Please call Sandy at the office if you cannot sit on any given Saturday you have signed up for; if it s a last minute illness please, call Helen , so she can arrange for an alternate. Thank you for your consideration. MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL...the beat goes on! Our Membership Directory is out, but there are still members who haven t renewed. Please remember to do so as soon as possible! Also please remember, the special rate (half price) of ADSO dues, which goes into effect on July 1, APPLIES ONLY TO NEW MEMBERS. Renewing members will pay the full amount of annual dues, $40 for individuals, $45 for family members.

Signed Show Posters Many members have commented on the beauty of our monthly show posters, designed by our own Rick Otoupalik. You may order any one of the 16 x 25in. posters for $15.00, or $25.00 signed by the artist. Contact Sandy at or adso@artsdesignsociety.org if you are interested CALENDARS NOW on Sale!!!! The 2016 Calendars are now on sale in the ADSO Office for $6 a bargain price for not only thirteen great works of art on the cover and monthly pages, but for many other great works that are interspersed on the days. A real bargain for so much beauty!

Window Gallery In June, the Window Gallery showcases the art of the work of Reg Moore, who works in acrylics and graphite. Stop by to see the show! The Photo Club will meet Wednesday, June 20, at 7 pm. Don t forget to check out ADSO on Facebook and Twitter Arts & Design Society of Drawings are thought feathers, they are ideas that I seize in mid flight and put down on paper. Louise Bourgeois Please Read... Policy Regarding Retrieval of Work After Shows The following policy, which has been in effect for over a year, is now being strictly enforced. Works not collected from all ADSO shows, including special shows (Beaux Arts, Fair Show, SERegional) on the designated dates, will incur a storage fee of $10 per show. This fee will be collected for works held one day to two weeks after the show closing. ADSO will not be responsible or liable for any damage to those works during that time. After two weeks, unclaimed works will become the property of ADSO. Exceptions can be made for special requests made in advance. A word from the ADSO Board re ADSO Modus Operandi The Board would like to remind everyone that ADSO is open to all artists no matter what their medium or experience. Please be welcoming to everyone who enters our doors and offers their art to our members and the public. We hope that you will be cordial to all members.
