1 DRUMBEAT SCHOOL Weekly Newsletter Dear Parents and Carers Dates for the Diary. With the election results coming in this morning we have topical articles in the newsletter. I am a signatory of a letter to Downing Street about the significant cuts being predicted to our children's education. The free school meals eligibility is important if proposed policies go ahead so please note procedures for this. Providing s so that we are paper free and cutting cost is also important so can you please contact us with this. Sports and events are very much on the calendar this term with our school finalists for the London Panathlon and competing at the Kent Cricket Festival in West Malling this month. For the moment most school trips to London have been cancelled. Trips will be planned that do not require public transport and are not in Central London. Our thoughts have been very much with the victims of the London tragedy this week and we joined with the rest of the country with a minute silence to show our respects Tuesday, 20 June 6th Form Duke of Edinburgh group expedition Thursday, 29 June Coffee Morning (11am) Topic at Downham: Housing Friday, 14 July Projects of Excellence Exhibition at Downham from 10:00am 12:00pm Friday, 14 July Summer Fair at Downham from1:00 3:30pm Friday, 14 July Brockley Summer Event from1:00 3:30pm Thursday, 20 July Students last day of term Have a good weekend. Coffee Morning Topics We are planning our Coffee Mornings for the next academic year. Please us on if there are any topics that you would like more information on or would like to discuss at these Coffee Mornings. We will try to book speakers for Brockley and at Downham. Help obtain government funding for your child's school! Did you know the government gives additional funding to schools for those children entitled to free school meals? Schools use this money to obtain additional staff and resources that help improve the quality of education. To find out whether your child qualifies for free school meals, and hence whether the school would receive additional funding, please fill in the details requested on this site: We can check eligibility on behalf of a parent, the parent will need to contact the office and book an appointment. The check can be done over the phone, you will need your National Insurance number and that of your partner if you have one, you will also need their date of birth. We will may have to ask you about tax credits, please have any letters to hand. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Drumbeat School & ASD Service 3

11 Downham Vs Brockley Football Match Round 2 Football players from Downham and Brockley met again to do battle on the football pitch at Brockley for a rematch which ended in a draw. It was a very close game with Brockley a goal ahead but just before the whistle blew for full time Downham equalised with a majestic long pass and beautiful tap in! Brockley are demanding a rematch and one is scheduled for later in the term. It was a very hot day so players had to stop regularly for water and shade. We are looking forward to the next match already. Drumbeat School & ASD Service 11
12 KS3 Activities Ideas: Digging it This term students in KS3 will be working on activities based around the topic of Digging it. This activity sheet has some ideas of activities that could assist this topic at home. Activities are ranging in levels so please feel free to use whatever you feel would be appropriate for your child. If you have any questions please note them in the contact book or ring your child s class teacher. Please note these activities are voluntary and there is no pressure to complete any, however if you do and would like to send anything into school please feel free. If you would like any personalised activities relating to your child s personalised plan target please speak to the class teacher. English: Key vocabulary * Find different equipment in the garden, can we find a hose? Rake? Spade? Watering can? * Look for different plants/flowers/trees in the environment. * Label and describe plants and flowers * Look after your plants together and talk about how to help them grow. *Definition game: ask your child to describe a plant or flower for you to guess. *Match plant pictures to text or symbols (can be sent home on request). *Talk about the actions you are doing while in the garden e.g. digging, planting, watering, weeding. *Spell key vocabulary words *Create a gardening diary. After planting seeds record the progress each day using symbol, text or typing. *Create a making of video. Students can record themselves on tablets or ipad in the garden. * Creating and or following instructions to plant a bulb: visuals can be sent home on request. Maths: Knowing and using Number facts (money, more/less) * Rolling a dice and adding together the total number of spots. *Play on TES iboard and match the alien number bonds to Pairs-to *Count change when paying at a shop. *Find 3 different ways to make 10 with coins. *Counting out how many sunflower seeds in a packet. 13 Computing Apps and Online resources Mouse control: title=five+little+ducks&pid=305 Design your own game: Matching game: My Creativity: During these activities there are lots of communication opportunities. This can range from adults labelling what they are doing e.g. you are sticking, to requesting items needed. A useful tip is to not have all items needed available so students are encouraged to request what they need verbally or using signs/symbols. This can be built up in steps e.g. first time have only one item needed missing then build this up to finding all the equipment needed. Activity Idea What you will need Instructions Grass caterpillars-tights Soil, grass seeds, String, eyes and pipe cleaners Cut a pair of tights. In a bowl mix some grass seed and soil. Fill tights. Tie string around different parts of tights. Decorate with eyes and pipe cleaner antennae. Water well each day. Painted tulips-using a fork Paint, Fork, Sugar paper Pour paint in a tray. Dip a fork in the paint and make marks. With a paintbrush add stems and leaves. Wind chimes Acrylic paint, pot, string, beads Begin stringing some beads on strings. 16 Djembe Class Sensory fun learning indoors and outdoors Our students engaged in some fantastic 1:1 learning with Sherie. They took turns sharing bubbles. They both really enjoyed blowing and popping the bubbles. Did you know a tomato is a fruit? Scientifically speaking. (We might not put it in a fruit salad!) Djembe class flowers, fruits and vegetables have all grown over the half term with the help of lots of sunshine and finally some rain. The students have now planted potatoes, a strawberry plant, a geranium from a cutting, peas, poppies, fox gloves, black Russian tomato plants, mint, parsley and lavender. The potato plants are now huge from planting just 2 potatoes. We wonder how many potatoes we will harvest at the end of term and if there will be enough to make a potato salad or chips.
