1 March 2015 Omahaartistsinc.com President s Message: Katrina Methot-Swanson Katie Johnson is the winner of the Genie Schafer Art Memorial Scholarship. She is planning on taking a pencil and pastel portraits workshop with Julie Lemons. Julie is a member of the Lincoln Art Guild and ANAC, and has held workshops at Noyes Art Gallery in Lincoln. Katie is very excited to receive this Scholarship. The Opal Parmenter Fellowship deadline was March 1,2015. It was awarded to Linda Bernett. She will be attending a workshop by Ken Elliott. Congratulations to you both! Katrina Methot-Swanson Board Meeting 10:00 / Lunch 11:30 Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at Joslyn Art Museum Joslyn Art Museum, 2200 Dodge St., Omaha, NE. Board meeting will be at 10:00 am in the Abbott Lecture Hall at the Joslyn. Lunch will follow in the Joslyn Café 11:30-12:30. Cost of lunch will be on your own. After lunch will be a short general meeting in the Abbott Lecture Hall, and then the Program will be a docent lead tour of the American Modern Exhibit. Joslyn is free for admission, lunch is on your own, but the American Modern Exhibit will be $10.00 for non members, free for Joslyn members. There is no need for a head count for this month. After Hours: Dori Settles Thanks to Jean Barban for leading us in a fun watercolor project, Flips. We had 6 members and 2 guests in attendance with some incredible results! March After Hours is hosted by Doris Helfrich at her daughter s adorable garden shop, The Potting Shed on Tuesday, March 24 at 6 pm. The Potting Shed is located at 5018 S. 153rd St., Omaha (off 156th and Q). Doris will instruct the group in painting (backward) on glass. Doris will provide the glass, paint and variety of brushes. Have a Liner brush or two, please bring them. Doris has several examples planned for those who prefer to focus on technique, but is happy to have everyone use their own artistic talents to come up with a unique piece. Perspective Drawing : with brief over view of perspective drawing: Terminology, One Point Perspective, Two Point Perspective, and Three Point Perspective, with Mile McLaughlin. Participants should bring: Pencil and soft eraser. Paper, 8 x 10 or larger, Straight edge larger than diagonal dimension of the paper. Ruler Tape, if you want to secure your paper to the table or drawing board. Mike McLaughlin, is an architect, currently working at Methodist Hospital in Omaha. Developed an interest in art as a kid. Got a how to draw book by Jon Gnagy. Been puttering with art ever since. Became an architect when building renderings were drawn by hand, and good perspective technique was critical to making a good rendering. February workshop was drawing with Julie Schramm. Everyone hard at work. Programs: Dori Settles The March 25th meeting is being held at the Joslyn Art Museum, where we will be participating in a tour at 1:00 pm of the American Modern Exhibit. For members there is no additional fee, non members the cost is $ The Joslyn has free admission. April Luncheon: Doug Zbylut, Executive Director Nebraskans for the Arts. Your input is requested! Nebraskans for the Arts have been involved over the last year in exploring a Creative Industries Council in Omaha. Doug invites all member of Omaha s Inc. to participate in a brief survey to learn our thoughts and opinions. At the luncheon, he will present survey results that have been collected to date. Size restrictions apply for Spring Show: Measurements are the outside frame dimensions. Smallest: 3 pieces no larger than 11x14, or 25 inches total. (Add length plus width, =25) Medium: 2 pieces 24x30 or smaller, or 54 inches total. Largest: 1 piece larger than 24x30. But no larger than 40x40 or 80 inches total. 4 March 2015 Page 4 ANAC: Association of Nebraska Art Clubs ANAC EXHIBIT RULES (revised Feb. 19, 2012) READ RULES OVER CAREFULLY TO INSURE YOUR WORK WILL BE SEEN BY THE JUDGE. 1. ENTRIES: All works must not have been shown previously in an ANAC exhibit *TWO-dimensional work shall not exceed 40 inches wide by 40 inches high. The 40 inches includes the frame. All work must be properly framed or have exposed perimeter edges finished consistent with the art piece. Work must be ready for hanging (use screw eyes and wire, NO SAWTOOTHS) and must be framed using Plexiglas (except pastels). Gallery wrapped canvas is acceptable without a frame, but the canvas edges must be painted around the sides. Edges must be lapped and ALL STAPLES MUST BE COVERED. If chosen for the travel show, ANAC will provide the carry case. Any two dimensional artwork which has glass as a medium must provide a travel container with the same requirements as three dimensional work. * THREE- dimensional work (free standing or relief on the wall) shall not exceed 36" in any direction. It shall not exceed 75 pounds in weight. The 75 pounds includes the weight of the packing box. A traveling container, (even if it hangs on the wall) of quality construction in proportion to your artwork is required. If upon inspection the exhibit board votes that the container is not of sufficient construction to withstand the rigors of travel, the piece will NOT be eligible for judging. All 3-D shipping containers MUST REMAIN with the artwork until the judging is completed. The Exhibit Board will return the containers to the club packing storage area after judging. All 3-D artists must provide a pedestal (if needed) for the conference show only. If the piece is chosen to travel, each club that participates is responsible to have a proper pedestal to safely display the artwork. Eliminating traveling pedestals should cut down excess size and weight. 2 THE NUMBER OF ENTRIES FOR EACH CLUB IS DETERMINED AS FOLLOWS a - Quotas.: New members may join your club up to March 1 to be counted toward your club's quota of entries for the Exhibit. The quota is based on the records of the Membership Chairman and Treasurer (paid memberships). b - Number of entries -Each club will receive its quota according to ANAC membership records. c Only ANAC members can enter and may exhibit through one club only. d - A maximum of two art pieces may be exhibited by an ANAC member. e - Work must have been completed in the last two years. f - Work must not have been previously shown at ANAC. This includes closely copied images from any of your previous ANAC submitted work. 3. A $5.00 entry fee shall be paid for each piece of art. Each club is requested to send one check to cover all their entries. 4. The ANAC Art Exhibit will be confined to original works in drawing, printmaking, collage, painting, photography, pottery, sculpture, textiles, and blown glass. If your work was done using a computer, please attach a sheet explaining the program and/or process used. To conform to the spirit of competition all work MUST BE ORIGINAL. No copies from other artists or published material will be allowed. No supervised work will be allowed. Source material must be available on request. Decision of the Exhibit Board as to eligibility will be final. The $5.00 entry fee will not be returned if your work is rejected. Questionable pieces will be removed from the show during judging and then re-hung for remainder of the show. Each entry must include the artist's entry statement COMPLETELY ANSWERED and signed by the artist. Each club chair should be responsible for proofreading these entry statements. 5. All work MUST BE PROPERLY IDENTIFIED ON THE ARTWORK ENTRY or work may be rejected. 6. All work must be retained in the exhibit for the duration of the exhibit and/or travel show. 7. The artwork in the Traveling Show cannot be sold by a commercial gallery or any other Travel Show site without first contacting the artist. The artist will deal directly with the buyer. ANAC will not be involved or responsible for any sales made. The Executive Board and Exhibit Board can make changes in the annual exhibit and travel show at any time.

Two pieces of art are allowed for selection and both are eligible. Label both pieces of art on the back of the piece with Your business card with the name of your art on it. ANAC paperwork and a $5.00 fee per art piece Must be completed If Chosen. Paperwork and pick up time: Saturday, April 11, at 2:30 pm. Judging for the Selection show will be going on, (Saturday, April 11, between 10:30 and 3:00 during the Spring Show at the Hot Shops. There is NO formal show. If you are planning on entering a piece for ANAC that is already hanging in the Spring Show please let Jo Anne Nielsen know when registering at the Spring Show, (April 1, between 5-8 pm. Jean has been an artist for 30 years and has taught art classes for 20 years through Community Colleges, galleries, art clubs and her personal studio. Treasurer s Report: Jo Anne Nielsen reported balance of $ ANAC: Jo Anne Nielsen reports that dues for coming year and ANAC show in June are due today. Those who have not paid the additional $2.00 please contact Jo Anne. Registration and Selection show will be during the registration for the Spring Show at the Hot Shops. April 11th is the deadline for application and artwork. If your piece is in the Spring Show, it will be taken down by the committee and reserved in a separate location for the ANAC show. See newsletter for more details. Art Shows: Take down for the JCC show is Sunday March 1, 1-3 pm. Two pieces were sold. See the Newsletter. Registration for the Spring Show is Wednesday April 1 at the Hot Shops from 5-8 pm. Theme: April Showers Bring (interpret as you see fit) Size restrictions apply. Reception is April 12. the Fall Show will be at Esprit Assisted Living Center from October thru November See newsletter for details. Community Art Bridge: Lourdes O Leary taught painted portraits lesson in February. We received a comment from a teacher that one woman with a hand injury/pain was able to complete the lesson with such success that she asked to take her work home. This program makes a difference. Pat Lontor will teach in March. Programs: Presenter today is Steve Tamayo, a native American artist who has much to share. April s presenter is a member who has put together a short movie from footage of the Fun Shops. Fun Shop: Marilyn Beig reported 30 members attended the February Fun Shop, drawing with Julie Schramm. Mike McLaughlin will be presenting lesson on perspective in March. Lynde George will do a Mixed Media lesson in April. For those who wish to stay past noon, Lynde will stay until 2:00 pm. Host: The new hostess team is, Katie Johnson, Carol McCall, and Patti Kounkel. Thank you for taking on this position. Next month s meeting is at the Joslyn Art Museum. No count or registration needed. Membership: Currently have 146 member which included 4 new members last month. Newsletter: Deadline is the last Friday of the month. Contact Linda Bernett with submissions. President: Katrina reported Katie Johnson won the Genie Schafer Award. Applications for the Opal Paramenter Award are due March 1. Officer nominations are coming up soon. If interested in serving on the Nominating committee, please contact Katrina. Slate of Officers is proposed in April, voted on in May and Induction in June. Secretary, Vice President, and President positions are open. Unfinished Business: Review Committee is being formed to revise the by-laws. Three to four members needed to review and make amendments. Lisa Latrop, Katrina Swanson and Susan Stevens have agreed to make the committee. They will meet in March for revisions to be posted in April and voted on in May.
