Telephone: HEATHFIELD NEWSLETTER ISSUE In this issue: Year 5 at the Mosque Young Voices 2018 Photography Club Interview with...mr Baker! Reception visit Tesco! Bake off The Unforgotten Coat Mathletics! Art Smart Certificates Y5 at Stockport Air Raid Shelter Y2 Flight Project Nursery Have a N-Ice Time Musical Assembly It can be quite difficult to produce this Newsletter not because there is a struggle to find items to include, but for the exact opposite reason; I need to try hard not to leave anything out! The trouble is that if I put in everything that was happening over the course of two weeks at Heathfield, the Newsletter would run to hundreds of pages. Every day, there ae fantastic lessons, every day we have clubs and activities running to interest all members of the School community. So, in this issue, I have chosen to highlight some spectacular news-worthy items: Young Voices 2018, where HF children joined a strong choir in the Manchester Arena; Reception at Tesco to find out more about where their food comes from; Bake-Off Club making delicious pizza in the Home Economics kitchen; and an interview with Heathfield s answer to Michael Caine, our very own Mr Baker...can you guess what his favourite film of all time might be?
As part of their RE education, Year 5 made a visit to the Madni Jamia Masjid Mosque in Bradford last week. As well as learning more about Islam, they were able to have a look behind the scenes in the mosque to find out more about how this religious building is actually run! On the next page is a report from two members of Year 5.
On Tuesday 24 th January Year 5 visited the Madni Mosque in Bradford. When we arrived on the coach we had to prepare ourselves before going inside. The girls covered their hair with scarves and the boys wore baseball caps. All the people who go into the mosque do this as a sign of respect. We were particularly lucky this year because we arrived at Prayer time. Hundreds of people were coming into the mosque, removing their shoes, washing in the wash rooms and going into the Prayer Hall. In the washrooms people wash more than their hands; they wash their ears, their hair, their mouths and their noses, etc. Then they are ready. Our class was able to sit at the back and watch the prayers. The men stand next to each other shoulder to shoulder to show they are all equal. The ladies and children prayed in a different room. The prayers only lasted seven minutes. This happens five times every day, the most important day being Friday, so the Mosque is a very busy place After this we visited the ladies area downstairs and then our lesson took place in the upstairs Prayer Hall. We learned that all the beautiful carpets face towards Mecca and we looked at different objects and books which the Muslim people use during worship. Fatima, our guide, told us all about the Five Pillars which help Muslim people live. Our visit was very interesting and we learned lots about how Muslim people live. We are very grateful to all the people at the Mosque for making our class so welcome. By Ava and Rhianna
Two weeks ago, a VERY excited coach-full of Heathfield singers set off for the Manchester Arena to take part in Young Voices This incredible event brings together Primary-age children from across a swathe of the nation from Yorkshire, from North Wales, Manchester...all regions were represented, so Heathfield was there as well, obviously! There were more than children forming the Young Voices choir, singing a selection of great songs, past and present, and helped along by guest stars, singers and dancers, contributing to a spectacular evening of entertainment! The photograph above shows an audience-eye view...the Heathfield contingent is on the lower tier, on the immediate right of the aisle. Surely you can see us?

Ever wondered what Mr Baker does in his spare time? Do you want to know his favourite film? Do you think he was well-behaved when he was at School? The answer to all these questions, and more, lies over the page, where Year 6 reporters have delved deep to provide a noholds-barred interview! Read on...
Another in our occasional series of interviews with adults in the School this edition, our intrepid Year 6 reporters approached Mr Baker with a range of probing questions... What do you like to do outside of work? Collecting and renovating antiques, watching football and cooking. What is the best thing you have done at Heathfield? Heathfield is such a special place that there are so many best things. However the thing that is consistently the best is working with our wonderful children. Did you enjoy your own school days? Yes, but I am not sure that my teachers enjoyed it as much as I did. What was your favourite subject? Maths! What was your favourite book? Why? I have lots! At the moment I am really enjoying Roald Dahl s Short Stories but they are not for children! What is your favourite film of all time? The Italian Job even though the ending still annoys me! Did you ever get in trouble when you were at school? A few times, but it was always a case of mistaken identity. I was very tall, with bright orange hair, so I don t know why this kept happening! What is your advice for any pupils at Heathfield? Be nice to yourself and others. When being nice is hard, that is when you need to work hardest at it!
I loved trying the cheese The fridge was very cold We watched her make hot cross buns We looked at lots of different fruit and vegetables Driving on the minibus was fun I saw a real fish
Casting a hopeful eye over the fresh bread rolls, and donning the chefs hats before getting onto the shop floor.
Finding out about fish & chomping on cheese! Baking some bread, back at base!
Staying on a culinary theme, I was lucky enough to visit the Bake Off Club last week when they were preparing pizzas. The standard of food produced was incredibly high parents of Bake Off pupils, I would suggest asking them to take their turn in cooking duties from now on!
Year 6 are investigating The Unforgotten Coat as their Book Club choice this half of term. As part of their exploration of the book, they have been working with forming narratives with photographs, as happens in the book. Just like in the story, however, not every picture is telling quite the story that at first appears!
Last week we awarded four Silver Certificates and a GOLD for Roman! 20 Art Credits for KS2 children; 15 for those in KS1

On Thursday, Mrs Eastwood and Mrs Bradley collaborated on a wonderful musical assembly the choir from Young Voices performed some of their favourite numbers from the mega-concert the week before, we were treated to guitar playing from Year 3 through to Year 6, Ben played a piano piece and the while School joined together to sing a traditional Kenyan song! At the end of the assembly, Mrs Eastwood challenged herself to be playing the guitar on stage by the end of the summer term and she has only just started taking her lessons! Watch this space!
