Do you need inspiration, a new approach to your painting, an expansion of your knowledge of watercolor? Whatever your skill level, workshops offer you the chance to spend a few days with a nationally known artist and teacher who can help you grow artistically and meet new goals in your art expression. In November we are featuring World famous artist and instructor, Frank Francese. Frank s Workshop is upbeat and positive, designed to generate enthusiasm. Each Day s schedule includes a 45 minute morning and afternoon painting demonstration, one-on-one instruction, group critiques and ample time for personal painting. Subject matter will range from nature, country scenes, city, and beach scenes. Watercolors came to the forefront of Francese s artistic work in His liquid style is unique and distinctive. Frank enjoys working on a very wet surface, letting the pure color mix itself on the paper. His shapes are large and loose, often disregarding fine detail. Frank uses abrupt color changes of the same value with the white of the watercolor paper to bring his paintings to life. ffrancese@bresnan.net Don t be left out! 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT September is the start of a brand new SAWG year and, though many of our seasonal members were not present, I could feel the enthusiasm and warmth of those who were there. I am looking forward to meeting more of our members at upcoming meetings and throughout the year. Those who were not in attendance missed a great presentation from Susan Morris on the Western Federation show from this past summer in Colorado. In addition, she outlined the evolving plans for our hosting of the event in Stay tuned for more information! This year is off and running and what a year it s shaping up to be! Have you registered for one of the workshops yet? There is still space in the Frank Francese, Suzanna Winton and Carole Hillsbery workshops. We are fortunate to have such quality artists come to our area. I hope you take advantage of these excellent workshops. We are also planning a December 8 holiday gala in the gallery. You won t want to miss that as well as an event in November to benefit a local charity. We are pleased to be forging a working relationship with SAACA (Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance) with the Waddell Reed exhibit beginning in October and looking toward future opportunities that may arise. This is important to our overall outreach initiative. We will be part of the Heart of Tucson Art (HOTA) open studio event the last weekend in October and are working together to promote SAWG in our community. We are entering our second year in the gallery this fall and are already seeing gallery traffic increase a bit as the weather becomes cooler. A special thank you to those of you who have been active in the gallery this past summer. The See You In September show was spectacular and the upcoming Signature Member show, Crème de la Crème, will be nothing less than that the best of the best. Please make plans to see the show and come to the reception on October 13 (5-7pm). Please note that we are working on alternatives to make things easier for artists who are reluctant to show their work because of docenting requirements. If taking a turn as docent is difficult for you, please do not let that keep you from entering shows because we ll work with you to find a way to make that possible. And because SAWG is an organization that offers so many possibilities, we introduced a new direction in the last issue of the Sketchbook that was discussed at the Board Retreat. We ll focus this year on building SAWG sustainability beyond our 50th Anniversary next year! We can do that with the help of your creative ideas! All of SAWG benefits when we have the involvement of our membership and that means you and me. We are reaching out to the membership and asking you to share your talents and your time with SAWG in this effort. We will be contacting the Links suggested at our Board Retreat and soliciting additional nominations to participate on one of the think tanks (financial, organizational, and gallery). In addition, there are several standing committees (membership, community outreach, marketing, and hospitality, to name a few) that share responsibility for keeping SAWG sustainable. I ll be working with the committee chairs to recruit members for that work as well. Ask me or any of the board officers how you can be involved! Thank you for your support and your commitment to creating art! Remember - To submit any articles for the Sketchbook to Debra Irons at d_irons@cox.net. Deadline is always the 15th of each month. 4 MORE SHOW NEWS Summer Shows See You in September! Congrats...People s Choice! Isapat Azumuth s painting Kicking Back was awarded a certificate for the People s Choice Award for last month s, See you in September Show, which also comes with one free painting entry for another Show. WESTERN FEDERATION OF WATERCOLOR SOCIETIES WESTERN FED DENVER UPDATES! The September 19th General Meeting was devoted to Western Fed, a larger group we all belong to just by being a member of SAWG. WFWS is made up of 12 societies like SAWG across 9 Western States. Susan Morris gave a presentation on the exhibit that was held in Denver, hosted by the Colorado Watercolor Society this past June. Highlights of that presentation were the members of SAWG who were accepted, won an award and received their Signature Status. She also gave us the heads up for the next exhibit which will be held in Eugene, Oregon April The prospectus can be found on the SAWG website on the bottomright of the Shows page. The deadline for that is coming up soon, November 1st. Also note that there are new restrictions on the mat size. Fear Not! You can paint any size you want, just keep that outside measurement the same as one of the six standard sizes they offer. The mat needs to be a minimum of 3, but it could be up to 6 or 7. Susan finished up with how the plans for WFWS 2018 are coming when SAWG gets to host here! If you want to be part of the team that gets us prepared, just give Susan a call or shoot her an . Now, get that Western Fed. entry ready! Fall Cleaning! With the change of the season, many of us do some deep cleaning, or at least do some de-cluttering or dejunking. As you do so, make sure you save all your artsy books, art supplies and excess crafty things to donate to SAWG. We ll be having a rummage sale, auction or the like, to raise funds to go towards helping us host Western Fed spring of More info will be coming soon! Now go get cleaning!

5 LONGTIME MEMBER RECOGNITION As we near the 50th anniversary of SAWG it s only fitting that we acknowledge two very accomplished, award winning artists. Jerry Becker has been a member for 44 years and Ruth Tone for 42 years. Both witnessed the early days of the Guild. Ruth Tone Jerry Becker RUTH TONE is one determined lady. She got a late start expressing her art in the way she had always wanted. With a permanent move to Tucson in 1974 and an empty nest she began to paint in ernest. Prior to this, Ruth had earned a BA degree with a double major in Commercial Art and Merchandising and landed a (brief) dream job in San Francisco. There she met and married her husband whose 32-year Air Force career took them through 27 moves while raising a family. It was finally her turn when she joined SAWG in Gerry Peirce (whose students formed the 10 charter members that became the Guild) was one of her early instructors. He inspired Ruth s passion for the medium of watercolor. She loved its fluid quality and transparency. It wasn t easy in the beginning. She ripped up nearly every painting for six months and endured some harsh criticism from those early workshop instructors. Then it clicked. Ruth persisted and learned so much absorbing what they taught. She worked through rejection, entered juried shows before the days of slides, digital, internet or a permanent gallery. She credits volunteering for the Guild show committees and being in charge of the jurors for an early Western Fed Show held here as being among her best learning experiences. The jurors taught her what makes good art and what judges look for. Along with forming friendships in SAWG, serving on the Board, painting and selling her work Ruth was active for many years in AWA in Phoenix as well as Tubac Center for the Arts. She earned Signature Status in 4 different societies: SAWG, AWA, Western Fed and Arizona Aqueous and received over 75 awards in shows over the years. All of her paintings are based on nature: landscape, flowers and rock formations. Having moved beyond her days as a purist watercolorist she experiments with mixed media including pen and ink. Ruth always loved teaching whether it was private classes, adult education or the memorable experience when a group of guild members taught junior high students on the Papago Indian Reservation weekly for a period of two years. Ruth, we appreciate your contributions to SAWG, your shows participation, your example of hard work, spirit of adventure and persistence- showing us it s never too late to achieve your dreams as an artist. JERRY BECKER considers himself lucky to have lived his entire life and raised a family while pursuing his creative expressions. Those who know him and his work would attribute his success not to luck but to his multiple talents as both an artist and a musician. He played drums, piano and the organ in a music career that spanned the years from age 13 when he had his own 4-piece band to still playing professionally into his late 60 s all types of music. This was coupled with a successful art career! He won his first city (Tacoma, Washington) exhibit art award at age 7 and never looked back. In 1972, tired of the soggy Northwest, Jerry packed up his family and moved to the Tucson desert. He was already an accomplished painter having taught workshops all over the Northwest for 14 years. He had received over 50 awards in juried shows, exhibited paintings in 64 one-man shows, operated his own art gallery and ran an art store that sold supplies, taught classes and did framing. All of his early work depicted the seascapes and landscapes of his former home. It was hard to adjust to the color and light in the desert Southwest. Jerry went to several Tucson galleries including Sanders gallery and El Presidio Gallery. He brought his Northwest pieces and sold them! Over 32 galleries and gift shops over the years represented his work in the Northwest, Sedona and Tucson. Now the only gallery he shows in is in Bisbee where he displays small watercolor pieces. His focus the last 30 years has been his work as a ceramicist, cutting down his amount of painting time. Tohono Chul has carried the ceramic pieces in their gift shop. Jerry remembers early Guild meetings at the gallery of Kay Bonfoey- she was one of Gerry Pierce s Puddle Pushers who later formed SAWG. Jerry also recalls the years of meeting at the Universalist Church near Swan and 22nd where he learned from various workshop artists that visited Tucson. Teaching at all levels including several Community Colleges and more recently in Saddlebrooke has been the highlight of his art career. Jerry has painted in many different styles, both realistic and abstract. What he enjoys most though is semi- abstract and loose realistic landscapes. He draws various techniques from his library of over 150 art books but feels that everyone still has to paint in their own unique style- much like their individual handwriting. Jerry has taught Plein Aire, used slides and photos but emphasizes to his students the value of sketching. Thank you Jerry for your years in the Guild, being an inspiration to your students over the years and also for your example and dedication to truly living a creative life.
