Undercoat the bow Zinc. This is to allow the red to cover better. Paint the bow Country Red. Shade with Napa Red darkened with a touch of Lamp Black. Highlight with Scarlet. Make a very watery mix of Country Red darkened with a touch of Lamp Black and make stripes across the bow with a size 6 flat shader. Let dry. Make them up and down too, to criss cross stripes. Let dry, then, using the same brush and just one stroke, paint a watery Lamp Black onto the squares where the stripes overlap. This will make a plaid design. SUPPLIES White Multi Chalk Pencil #70200 PREPARATION Coat wood slice with two coats Dura Clear Satin Varnish, sanding lightly after each application. Pine Cones, Leaves, and Berries Roughly basecoat the pine cones with Burnt Umber darkened with Lamp Black. Base coat leaves Hauser Medium Green with a size 8 flat shader. Keep points sharp with the edge of the chisel point or use a small liner. You can now put in the background shadows. Mix Liquid Shadow with Burnt Umber (3:1) and, working small areas at a time, apply a thin flat stroke against the leaves and pine cones. Use a No 6 shader then immediately mop softly or pounce with a dry 1/2" mop brush to diffuse the edges. Let dry and apply again where the shadow would be darker under the pine cones and leaves. Let dry. Use a size 1 liner to run a center vein of Evergreen down each leaf, then stroke the paint outward on either side. With the same brush, apply Citron Green 2 artistsclub.com

3 to the outer edges and stroke inward. End the stroke before you reach the center vein. Run a thin line of Citron Green down the center on top of the Evergreen. Add a touch of white to the Citron and highlight leaves with a size 10/0 liner. Emphasize points on leaves with a 10/0 liner and Evergreen or Citron Green where needed. Transfer pine cone petals with chalk pencil. Float Honey Brown with size 10 flat around tips. Let dry, and add a touch of Snow White to the Honey Brown then brighten tips only with a size 8 flat. Let dry. Float Burnt Umber onto any outside pine cone petals that need defining. Lightly erase chalk lines. Make lines in petals with watery Burnt Umber and a size 10/0 liner. Float deep shading around elements that overlap another element. Example: where an item overlaps the ribbon, float dark red (a touch of Lamp Black added to Country Red) on the ribbon up against the edge of the leaf or pine cone. Where one leaf overlaps another, float Prussian Blue on the leaves. Paint pine sprigs with Burnt Umber and highlight with Bleached Sand. Use a size 2 Script Liner to stroke in needles of dark green (Evergreen darkened with Lamp Black) then follow with needles of Desert Cactus. Finally, add some highlighted needles in Desert Cactus tinted with white. Paint holly berries with 2:1 mix snow white and Desert Cactus. Shadow with white and a touch of Prussian Blue on lower left. Highlight with white on upper right. Dot with Hauser Medium Green for stem. artistsclub.com 3
