2 Why choose DuPont Protera fabric? When your work involves the risk of electric arc hazards, protection and safety come first. DuPont Protera fabric meets NFPA 70E Hazard Risk Category 2 requirements and the inherent protection won t wash or wear away. Along with its protection against electric arc hazards, Protera also offers better comfort and durability than FR treated cotton/nylon fabrics and Tecasafe Plus. One of the lightest weight NFPA 70E Category 2 fabrics on the market, Protera proves that less is more. DuPont Protera provides enhanced worker comfort and performance In addition to providing wearers excellent arc protection, tests have shown that garments made with DuPont Protera fabric offer a high level of comfort when compared to flameretardant treated (FR) cotton nylon blend fabrics on the market today. In fact, in a recent independent comfort study, wearers judged Protera the clear winner in overall comfort compared to FR cotton nylon blend garments of similar weight. DuPont Protera provides superior durability even after laundering DuPont Protera garments will have a better lifecycle value than less durable FR cotton nylon blend garments. That is because Protera is twice as strong as FR cotton nylon blend fabrics and it stays twice as strong even after 100 washes. DuPont Protera has a patented engineered fiber blend to produce one of the lightest weight and most comfortable NFPA 70E Hazard Risk Category 2 fabrics on the market today. Protera provides better durability than Tecasafe Plus and FR treated cotton/nylon for as received fabric: è Tensile strength 8% or more è Tear strength 15% or more After 100 launderings these advantages vs. Tecasafe Plus increase: è Tensile strength 35% or more è Tear strength 42% or more This advantage is more significant vs. FR treated cotton/nylon. Protera also retains its abrasion resistance over repeated launderings while the performance of Tecasafe Plus and FR treated cotton/nylon declines. The superior durability of Protera equates to lower lifecycle costs and greater savings to you. DuPont Protera is lightweight, breathable, and moisture wicking è Lightweight: DuPont Protera provides superior arc performance at a lighter weight compared to either Tecasafe Plus or FR treated cotton/nylon, delivering lightweight comfort. è Breathable: DuPont Protera is more than 2 times more air permeable than either Tecasafe Plus or FR treated cotton/nylon. è Moisture Wicking: Both DuPont Protera and Tecasafe Plus are comparable. Tested on as received fabric. 3 Frequently asked questions? 1.0 Why is inherent protection important to me? The flame-resistant (FR) properties of inherent fabrics cannot be washed out or worn away. This means the flame-resistant properties of garments made of inherent fibers cannot be compromised. It is crucial for the wearer to know the flame-resistant protection is always there. 2.0 What does inherent for the life of the garment mean? Only garments using fabrics made of inherently flame-resistant fibers are truly "inherent". FR-treated fabrics are chemically treated to provide FR properties and are not inherently flame resistant. 3.0 How can FR properties be removed from a garment? For FR-treated fabric, such as FR cotton/nylon blends, one way to remove its flame resistant properties is to use regular chlorine bleach while washing the garment. Test results shown in the chart below demonstrate this. Char damage length is one of the key criteria used to qualify fabrics as being "flame resistant". NFPA 2112 sets a requirement of less than or equal to 4 inches of char damage length. As can be seen in the chart, while the FR cotton/nylon fabric passed this requirement when new (0 washes), by 10 washes with regular detergent and chlorine bleach, its char length had increased to 12 inches and the entire length of the sample burned. While the use of chlorine bleach may not be recommended by some fabric manufacturers' laundry instructions, this can happen in the real world. It does not take many washes with chlorine bleach to damage the flame resistant properties of a FR cotton or cotton/nylon fabric, and unfortunately, the wearer would not be able to tell that it was no longer flame resistant simply by looking at the garment. With inherent fabrics, the flame resistant properties can not be removed. Note that for DuPont Nomex IIIA and Protera fabrics laundered and tested in the same way, even at 30 washes with detergent and chlorine bleach, both fabrics meet the NFPA 2112 requirements for damaged char length. 12 Char length 4 inches (NFPA 2112 requirement) 10 Char Length (Inches) Washings 10 Washings 20 Washings 30 Washings 0 FR-Treated Cotton/Nylon Protera Nomex IIIA Char length damage according to NFPA 2112 Notes: Ø Fabrics were all home-laundered using household detergent and chlorine bleach and following the recommended instructions on the label. Ø Char length is the length that is damaged when 12 inches long fabric samples are tested using ASTM D6413 test method. Ø Fabric softeners and/or dryer sheets should not be used in laundering FR garments as they may contaminate the garment with chemicals that could be flammable. 4 Frequently asked questions? 4.0 What will happen if I home launder FR-treated cotton/nylon, Nomex IIIA or Protera garments? If home laundering instructions for Nomex IIIA, Protera and FR-treated cotton/nylon garments are followed precisely, nothing negative should happen to any of these garments. However, there have been specific instances when FR-treated cotton/nylon garments were laundered using hydrogen peroxide (a type of oxygen bleach) during the wash cycle and the flame resistant properties of the FR-treated cotton/nylon fabrics were compromised. 5.0 Other than chlorine bleach, what else could damage the flame resistant properties of FR treated garments? The combination of hydrogen peroxide (a type of oxygen bleach) with 'hard' water during laundering could compromise the FR properties of garments made with FR-treated fabrics. Exposure to oxidizing (e.g. chlorinecontaining) chemicals in the workplace may, over a period of time, compromise the flame resistant properties of garments made with FR-treated fabrics. 6.0 How will I know if the FR-treated garment's FR properties have been compromised? Without performing destructive testing, such as vertical flammability testing, you would not know. This is dangerous, since the wearer cannot see the difference between a FR- treated garment that is still effective and one that has lost its flame-resistant properties. 7.0 When should I 'retire' my FR garments from service? Any garment with visible holes, rips, and/or tears or contamination from flammable materials should be properly repaired, cleaned, or removed from service. But it is difficult to judge the remaining level of flame resistance in a FR-treated garment because there are no visible clues. The flame-resistant performance can only be determined through a destructive test. Since the FR properties of a truly inherent FR fabric, like Nomex IIIA and Protera, do not change with use or laundering, the FR properties for Nomex IIIA and Protera will be there no matter the garment age or how it was laundered. A garment made with FR-treated fabric, such as FR cotton/nylon blends, may need to be retired from service because its FR chemical treatment was compromised, long before the fabric shows any visible wear. However, the wearer would not know this since the garment would show no indication of this compromise. 8.0 If Nomex IIIA and Protera fabrics are inherently Flame Resistant, why do the DuPont laundry instructions advise me not to use chlorine bleach? Repeated use of chlorine bleach in the laundry can affect fabric color and can weaken fabric strength, which may shorten the useful wear life of the garment. Exposure to chlorine bleach will not affect the flame-resistant properties of inherently FR fabrics like Nomex IIIA and Protera. 9.0 How does Protera compare to FR-treated Cotton or Cotton/Nylon Blends? Protera fabrics and garments provide inherent protection against electric arc hazards. This means that the thermal protection cannot be washed out or worn away as compared with chemically treated FR products. Garments made from Protera fabric are lighter weight than FR cotton/nylon blend garments and they will retain their professional appearance throughout extended use and repeated laundering. Protera garments will demonstrate a better lifecycle value than less durable FR-treated cotton and FR-treated cotton/nylon blend garments If inherent FR garments and FR-treated garments perform differently, how can they both be certified to the same standard? The two main garment performance standards for FR clothing, NFPA 2112 and ASTM F1506 (used for NFPA 70E), only specify minimum performance levels for fabrics and garments. These standards do not address all factors related to durability of the flame resistant properties. It is the end-user's responsibility to determine if these minimum standards provide an appropriate performance level for their particular application. 15 Insulating Gloves Insulating Rubber Gloves Must be used with leather overgloves Composite Gloves Higher mechanical properties for working in full safety without leather overgloves Arc flash tested: IEC Class 2 Class Max. Operating Voltage (V AC rms) Proof Test Voltage (V AC rms) Withstand Voltage (V AC rms) All insulating gloves must inflated and visually inspected before each use. For Class 00 and Class 0 gloves: The test consist of an air inflation test and visual inspection. The dielectric test is not required, but may be performed at the request of the user. For Class 1, 2, 3 and 4 gloves: Even when held in storage, the gloves should not be used unless they have been dielectrically tested within a maximum period of six months. The most common testing periods currently range from 30 days to 90 days. Notes There are two main types of Insulating Gloves: Rubber gloves provide high dielectric performance. They must be used with leather glove covers for mechanical protection. Gloves with mechanical properties offer superior mechanical protection against punctures and tears. They eliminate the need for overgloves. In the choice of class, it is important to define the network nominal voltage which must not exceed the maximum operating voltage of the insulating gloves. For multi-phase networks, the network nominal voltage is the voltage between phases. The test voltage is the voltage applied to the gloves during the individual glove routine tests. The withstand voltage is the voltage applied during the validation tests, after the gloves have been conditioned for 16 hours in water and after the 3-minute test at the proof voltage. Overgloves must be worn over insulating gloves to protect against mechanical risks, and when necessary, against electric arc risk. Page 14

18 Precautions WARNING READ BEFORE USING GARMENTS AND PRODUCTS Arc flash garments and products are intended to provide protection from the thermal hazards of an electric arc flash. The garments and products comply with the standards that are intended to protect users against arc flash in most situations that arise from normal use. There may be exceptional circumstances, in which even the best protection may not be sufficient to prevent injuries, or related effects, caused by an electric arc flash and the mechanical effects of the arc blast. The use of the garments and products does not guarantee that complete protection will be provided in those exceptional circumstances. It is the responsibility of the user to determine if the garments and products are appropriate for the intended use and that it complies with all the laws and regulatory standards. If in doubt or if you do not fully understand these limitations, please contact us for additional information and assistance. Face Shields v v v v Do not leave face shields in direct sunlight for long periods of time. Do not place or store face shields near a heat source. Do not use cracked or broken face shields. Do not use face shields that have been exposed to an arc flash. Ageing caused by radiation from direct sun and ambient light: For face shields using absorption technology, easily recognisable by the green or yellow tinted visors, almost all the harmful radiation is absorbed by the visor and not transmitted through the visor. It is this absorption of radiation that will protect users during an electric arc flash event. However, the visor will also absorb radiation from the daily exposure to sun and ambient light, which will accelerated the ageing and change the optical characteristics of the visor. This ageing process will require periodic inspection and replacement of the face shields. For face shields using reflection technology (BSD ErgoS Face Shield family and BSD Arc Protection Hoods), only a small part of the harmful radiation will be absorbed and the majority of the radiation will be reflected. This reflection technology will not only protect the user during an arc flash but will also protect the visor from the radiation that it s exposed to during daily use. The lifespan of the polycarbonate visor is therefore extended well beyond the estimated lifespan of the face shield. The BSD ErgoS-2Plus and ErgoS-Power face shields, with clear visors, have no restriction on lifetime and durability when used in accordance with the instruction for use. Classification criteria for defects are all defects and damages that are identified by the user during the visual inspection of the product. Definitions: v v v Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV): Numerical value of incident energy attributed to a material that describes its thermal properties of attenuating (reducing) a heat flux generated by an electric arc. The ATPV is the value of incident energy which results in a 50% probability that sufficient heat transfer through the test specimen is predicted to cause the onset of a second degree skin burn injury based on the Stoll curve. Heat Attenuation Factor (HAF): Percentage of the incident energy which is blocked by a material at an incident energy level equal to ATPV. Break open threshold energy (E BT): Numerical value of incident energy attributed to a material that describes its break open properties when exposed to heat flux of electric arc. The EBT is the value of incident energy with a 50% probability that break open of the test specimen will occur. Page 17
