3 SCOPE OF PROTECTION CLEANING This range of garments is designed to protect the wearer against welding spatter (small splashes of molten metal), short contact time with flame and radiant heat from the arc. They also minimise the possibility of electrical shock by short term, accidental contact with live electrical conductors at voltages up to approximately 100V dc in normal conditions of wearing. The garments will protect against processes that have similar levels or risk such as cutting, grinding, arc air gouging and spraying. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY PPE Please note that during the welding operation we always recommend the use of primary PPE such as protective apron, gauntlets etc. The welding garments should be regarded as secondary protection. Use of PPE will improve the level of protection for the wearer and reduce the risk of skin burns. It will also increase the life of the garment. Welding can have a damaging effect on the surface of the garment. The purpose of all PPE is to protect the wearer against one or more safety and health hazards. The first priority is to keep the user safe and injury free. However during any hazardous operations there is always the possibility that the protective clothing will become damaged by heat, flame, sparks, splashes, etc. When a spark or hot welding splash hits the surface of the garment, the fabric immediately chars. The flame retardant treatment in the fabric prevents the char from continuing to glow or spread beyond the local area. If the hot splash hits a smooth vertical surface (e.g. wearing standing upright and no obstruction on the garment) the hot droplet may fall off and the level of damage is reduced. If it hits a horizontal surface (e.g. shoulder, arm extended) or becomes trapped (e.g. crook of arm, creases, pocket) it will remain in place and continue to char until it cools down. Although the glow will extinguish and prevent serious injury, there will be greater damage to the surface of the garment. As it cools down the char will turn brittle and eventually fall out, leaving a hole in the fabric. This can be repaired by qualified machinists using an approved fabric patch. However if this occurs repeatedly, the condition of the garment will soon deteriorate and the safety of the wearer will be compromised. It should therefore be replaced immediately. HERE ARE FOUR WAYS TO HELP REDUCE DAMAGE TO THE GARMENT Use primary PPE Select a garment with a plain front surface (no external pockets no reflective tape etc.) Ensuring the correct fit will reduce creases in the sleeves and legs Regular cleaning contamination on the surface may result in prolonged burning Fabric is suitable for industrial laundering using synthetic detergents. Soap powders and bleach should be avoided. It may also be dry cleaned without any adverse effects. The importance of regular cleaning cannot be overstated. Over many years of supplying protective clothing we have found that the majority of garments which have been damaged by flame, sparks or splashes were either: - Contaminated with a flammable substance which prolonged the burning or, - So heavily soiled that the flame retardant properties of the fabric were masked We would recommend regular cleaning by a professional laundry. Garments can be washed and dried using an approved process, and any damage would be identified and safely repaired. It is often thought that the FR treatment will wash out after repeated laundry processing washes is regularly quoted as the point at which a treated fabric will lose its FR performance due to washing. However this is not correct The FR treatment process ensures that a solid flame retardant polymer is physically trapped into the core of each cotton fibre. The polymer is insoluble. It cannot be removed by a conventional wash process. NB. Chlorine bleach should NOT be used as it weakens the polymer. CURRENT EUROPEAN STANDARDS EN ISO 11612:2015: Protective Clothing - Clothing to protect against heat and flame. EN ISO 11611:2015: Protective clothing for use in welding and allied processes. Class 1 for protection against less hazardous welding techniques and situations, causing lower levels of spatter and radiant heat. Class 2 for protection against more hazardous welding techniques and situations, causing higher levels or spatter and radiant heat. 4 GUARANTEED FLAME RETARDANT FOR THE LIFE OF THE GARMENT PHOENIX BY ALSICO PHOENIX Excellent value for money Phoenix is a 100% Cotton fabric with a durable flame retardant treatment Offering a high level of wearer comfort and absorbency 340g/m 2 ensuring a good level of protection against heat and flame (EN ISO 11612) Offering a good level of protection from splashes and sparks caused by welding, grinding, gouging and similar processes (EN ISO 11611) Contains no substances which may be harmful to the wearer s skin The fabric is manufactured under the global Oeko-Text Standard 100 which is an independent testing and certification system for textiles When a flame or spark comes into contact with the surface of the fabric, it forms a charred area which helps to insulate the wearer from the heat. Within 2 seconds any flame or glow will extinguish and the charred area will turn brittle as it cools. The char will eventually fall out, leaving a hole which can be repaired by a qualified machinist using the same fabric THE FR FINISH THAT WILL NOT WASH OUT.
