1 Course Description Stevenson High School Fashion Merchandising & Design Course Goal: This course is designed to help students discover how the field of fashion merchandising is incorporated into global society. Students will explore techniques that are incorporated into fashion design, marketing, and advertising. Through projects students will develop a greater understanding of the opportunities available in the fashion industry. Objectives: 1. Discover and explore sketching techniques to create fashion illustrations. 2. Recognize that clothing, fashion and textiles evolve from culture and reflect the economic, political, and social conditions of the times. 3. Explore and practice the fashion design process. 4. Understand and use terminology associated with the fashion industry. 5. Develop an understanding of how fashion is created, evaluated, refined, and changed and how it evolves into products for consumer use. 6. Research and explain the role of fashion designers in the apparel industry. 7. Identify historical fashion styles and describe how they translate to current fashion trends. 8. Identify and describe the elements and principles of design as used in the fashion industry. 9. Describe the process of fashion production, promotion, distribution and sales. 10. Create an awareness of the careers and opportunities in the clothing, textile, and fashion industries. Attendance Policy: If excused, students should take it upon themselves to make arrangements for missed work. It is the student s responsibility to make up work from absences. Class attendance is important for success in this class. Use the class website as a resource for missed class information and assignments.

2 Classroom Expectations: Respect all individuals in the class to maintain a positive environment for learning. Participate fully in the course. Learning is an active process; we learn by doing. Observe school rules and maintain a clean environment within the classroom. Be prompt to and present in class. Be a reliable team member. Monitor progress toward learning targets throughout the semester. Bring necessary supplies to class for assigned activities. Activities, Grading & Evaluation: Daily class activities may include: discussions, group work, projects, videos, and field trips. There will be numerous opportunities to meet course targets this semester. This includes homework, class work, portfolio work and projects. There are no tests or quizzes. This course is graded using a standards based grading policy. More information will be provided on this later this week. The final exam is project-based and will be completed over the course of the semester. All students are required to complete the final exam. It is the student s responsibility to monitor progress of grades. Required Equipment: 1 or more current magazines for cutting out pictures. Good examples include: Vogue, Women s Wear Daily, InStyle. You want magazines with a lot of pictures and advertisements. 1 glue stick 1-inch 3-ring binder 1 spiral bound sketchbook 8x10 inch at least (found at Michael s, Hobby Lobby, Joann Fabrics) Eraser & Pencils (several you can leave in the classroom) Colored pencils (optional) Course Outline: Unit 1: Fashion Illustration & Textiles Topics: croqui drawing, inspiration, rendering using pencils and markers, how a sketch becomes a garment, how clothes are constructed and textiles Unit 2: Changing World of Fashion Topics: vocabulary of fashion, business terms Unit 3: Elements & Principles of Design Topics: Elements of design: form, shape, space, line, light, texture, pattern Principles of design: balance, emphasis, rhythm, proportion, unity Unit 4: Fashion Cycles & History Topics: influence of fashion designers past & present, the fashion cycle, influence of culture and customs on clothing choices Unit 5: Fashion Marketing: Price, Promotion, Place, Product Topics: influence of the 4 P s of marketing on the fashion industry Knowledge is the foundation. 3 Fashion Merchandising Course Standards, Objectives, & Targets Standard: Content Knowledge Objective: Identify and define why people wear clothes 1. Identify different motives for wearing clothes. 2. Relate apparel design to specific needs and activities. 3. Explain the influence of issues or events on national and global fashion. Objective: Use & define the terminology for fashion commonly used in the industry. 1. Identify and describe the elements and principles of design. 2. Identify types of stitches, seams, and seam finishes. 3. Define the stages of the fashion cycle. 4. Identify the use of color in fashion and is able to reflect on these colors. Objective: Research and explain the role of fashion designers in the apparel industry. 1. Identify the fashion designers of the past and explain their influence on fashion today. 2. Identify the current fashion designers and explain their influence on fashion today. Objective: Research and explain the importance of historical fashion. 1. Explore the development and features of fashions that are characteristic of various historical periods. 2. Compare historical fashion details to current fashions, fashion trends and fashion cycles. 3. Determine and consider how cultural, historical, social, economic, political, environmental, and technological forces influenced fashion. Objective: Describe the process of fashion production, promotion, distribution and sales. 1. Become aware of the influence of technological innovations on the apparel and textile industry. 2. Describe the movement of fashion from the manufacturer to the consumer. 3. Describe promotional activities that manufacturers and retailers use to reach customers. 4. Identify careers in the apparel and textile fields.

Objective: Demonstrate the use of the element of design - Space 1. Create a fashion sketch incorporating empty space, showing use of color, rendering and design details. 2. Create a fashion sketch incorporating positive and negative space, showing use of color, Objective: Demonstrate the use of the element of design - Pattern 1. Create a pattern showing creativity and use of color. 2. Create a fashion sketch incorporating a pattern, showing use of color, rendering and design details.

Analyze fashion garments using the principles of design.
