Who is Fashion Takes Action? Canada s only non-profit whose mission is to advance fashion sustainability through education, awareness and collaboration. Using a systems thinking approach, we work with both industry and consumers.
Our Workshops Address Waste The True Cost of Fashion (full day, 4 x 75 min) The Footprint of Fashion (half day, 2 x 75 min) Both address the 7Rs of Fashion as easy things we can all do!
Our Workshops Address Waste Curriculum aligned: Geography, Sociology, Fashion, Science, Civics, Leadership!... Other: French & English; 2-4 EcoSchools sections bit.ly/mcmwinfoandbooking
Why Fashion? The fashion industry is the 2nd largest global polluter after oil and responsible for 5% of GHG emissions. It s the 2nd most chemical dependent industry chemicals turn raw materials into textiles. These toxic chemicals pollute 5,640,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools of water/year. (Just check the colours of the rivers!)
Why Fashion? The fashion industry employs more than 200 million people worldwide. That doesn t include cotton farmers. 80% of garment workers are women. 36 million people are living in modern slavery -- many of them in the supply chains of Western brands.
Fashion. Waste. Climate. As a society we purchase 400% more clothing today than we did 20 years ago. Between 2000 and 2014, fashion consumption grew by 60%, but consumers now keep garments half as long. A lot of that goes to waste.
Fashion. Waste. Climate. Every household in Ontario sends 48 kg of textiles to landfill/ year 1 kg of textiles = 4 kg of CO2 5 million Ontario households = 960 million kg of CO2 Equivalent to more than 7 CN Towers in weight/ year!
Fashion. Waste. Climate. 52 seasons a year. Canadians = 70 items average/year. Greenpeace study: 66% of shoppers lost the buzz of new purchase in as little as just a few moments, to one day. UK study: wear items 7 times (maybe 3). UK study: 70% of garments in landfill improperly laundered
Why Fashion? Fashion is fun and creative! We get dressed every day. Why not make an impact? 2/3 of the impact is in our direct power to change! This is why we also focus on personal practice.
Why Fashion? Fashion is about dressing according to what s fashionable. Style is more about being yourself. Oscar de la Renta
Why Fashion? Faster than anything else, what we wear tells the story of who we are - or who we want to be. Fashion is the most immediate and intimate form of self-expression. What we choose to wear reflects how we view the world and how we want the world to view us. Frances Corner
