3 3 Welcome to the 21st Annual Educational Conference President Teresa Nieswaag Welcome to Stitched Together Through Time, the 2014 ASDP national conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, October As in past years, there will be many exciting, memorable moments to experience during this year s gathering, with plenty of opportunities for professional growth and education. Our conference planners have given us so many choices of things to do very close to the hotel that you may want to add an extra day before or after conference to take the time for more exploring. Classes offered during the core conference are either half or full day in length. This year Master classes will only be offered during the two days prior to the core conference, so be sure to register early, as these learning-intensive classes are always popular. Thursday evening will be our Welcome Reception, where there will be time for rekindling friendships and making new ones. Friday s luncheon will feature Pamela Ptak as our Keynote speaker. Pamela has competed in Project Runway and also worked with well known designer, Ralph Rucci. The Threads Power Suit Challenge finalists and member fashion show will take place Friday evening with our Lifetime Achievement Award presentation. Be sure to support our vendors market on Saturday afternoon from 2-6:30pm. The annual ASDP business meeting will take place Sunday with breakfast. Take time to read through all of the information in this brochure, make your selections and sign up early to retain your place in your favorite class and activity choices. 4 4 About Philadelphia & Our Conference Venue The 21st Annual ASDP Educational Conference will be held at the Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District Hotel in the celebrated Old City neighborhood. Within a five minute walk are many of the city s iconic American Revolution landmarks. You won t want to miss Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Check out Karen Gay s article in May Perspectives Looking Forward to Philly and maybe add an extra day or two to your conference trip to take it all in! The Conference offers a unique opportunity each year for continuing education as well as networking. It s a time to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. Temperatures in Philadelphia during October are in the mid 60 s with lows in the mid 40 s. This is just perfect for comfortably getting about to sightsee!

8 8 Early Bird Pricing There is an Early Bird discount for ASDP members who register this year between July 1 and July 15, 2014, so sign up early! We suggest you print this brochure to review and make your choices. Classes have space limits and will be filled by a first-registered policy. Class registration will close when that class reaches its maximum capacity. If the class you wish to choose is already full when you are submitting your conference registration, it will not be available and you will need to make an alternate choice. Registration for classes not filled will remain open until the time a class begins. However any class that has not reached its minimum registration number by September 15 is subject to cancellation by ASDP. All noted kit fees are payable directly to the instructor at the beginning of your class. Conference registration fees are different for members and non-members. If you qualify to be a member and would like to join the Association before you register for conference, you may apply online at and click on Learn More About ASDP Membership. Conference registration for non-members will open August 1, 2014 at 10:00am CST. Registration can be submitted electronically through the ASDP website with payment using credit card or Paypal. 9 9 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNER JUDITH NEUKAM Judith Neukam has been sewing for more than 50 years professionally and as a pastime. She has created custom clothes, designed women's ready-to-wear garments, mastered fittings and alterations, and worked with garment manufacturers and retail textiles. Fifteen years ago, she joined the staff of Threads magazine and today serves as its executive editor. She not only maintains the magazine's technical accuracy, but also is a driving force behind Threads' growing video series offerings. Her years as an art teacher helped her conceive, write, produce, and appear in front of the camera for more than two dozen DVDs. Those include her original tutorials, the popular Teach Yourself to Sew series. Judy also is a longtime coordinator and judge of the annual Threads/ASDP design challenge, a showcase of innovative and inspiring sewing techniques.

10 10 KEYNOTE SPEAKER PAMELA PTAK Topic: "Memoirs from the Paris Haute Couture" After finishing graduate studies in design Pamela Ptak set aside her title "fashion designer" to quietly work for notable fashion designers in NYC, culminating in her 3 year stint making garments for the catwalk at the Paris Haute Couture. In this talk Pamela will share her journey following the fashion muse.

11 11 Thursday October 16 8am to 5pm Tour Information Fashion, Fabrics and Fun in Philly Depart the Wyndham by trolley bus at 8 a.m. Guided tour of Drexel University s URBN Center, home of the Fashion Design and Merchandising School. Our visit will include a look at their historic garment collection, state of the art fashion tech lab with 3D printer, computerized laser cutter, wet lab and 3D knitting machine, as well as FABULOUS inspiration from the student works in progress. Macy s at City Center for a look at Philly s Fashion Incubator Program with Executive Director Elissa Bloom. We will see where and how this venture is mentoring up and coming designers in the city. After enjoying a box lunch from one of Philly s hot local lunch spots, you will be whisked off to the Philadelphia Museum of Art s Perelman Building, to check out two current fashion exhibits on designer Patrick Kelly. Then we will step into the Costume and Textiles Study Room for a private peek at the museum s most valued, most unusual and most amazing textile and garment objects with supervising curator Kristina Haugland. Last, but not least, we will turn you loose on Fabric Row for some shopping, map in hand. Wander as you wish, visiting the new location of Jack B s (rebuilt after a fire), seeing the fun and funky Fabrics on Fourth, losing yourself in the maze of notions and fabrics at Fleishman Supplies, or marveling at the over-the-top embellishments at Phuong s, among others! Meet us back at the bus in time for our ride back to the Wyndham! Return to the Wyndham by trolley bus at 5pm.

Veronica Chin Sassy Straws Symposium Explore the creativity of blocking straw hats in this two day Master class. The array of straw materials is fascinating and broad- from flat yardage sinamays to seagrass, sisal or panama hoods and capelines. The class participant should be able to create at least two hats ranging from free-form to traditional silhouettes. Learn basic millinery skills and possibly one or two trimming techniques to adorn your new creations! Kit Fee: Basic hand and machine sewing skills A list will be sent to class attendees None. Attendees will be responsible for purchasing millinery supplies Veronica Chin Veronica Chin is an educator and millinery designer who has developed millinery programs for numerous colleges and taught a wide spectrum of fashion-oriented subjects. She is interested in shaping new courses in millinery and fashion illustration as well as developing accessory programs for college curriculums

13 13 2. Laurel Hoffman From Conception to Production First day, first segment: Participants develop a line of blouses from clippings brought from home and make a presentation board. First day, second segment: Participants prepare the sample pattern tracing/ converting a home sewing blouse pattern, chosen by the instructor, into an industrial pattern. Students determine lappage and button placement. If time, participants learn how to insert additional bust darting. Second day, third segment: Grading explained and demonstrated. Participants grade a collar, then draft the bottom collar; determine sleeve cap notch placements, and if time, participants draft facing, interfacing and cuff facing. Second day, fourth segment: Determining yardages, layouts, cutting, mass-production sewing demonstrated. Students sew to match without pins. None Butterick pattern B 6085 in participant s size, paper scissors, small jar rubber cement, pencils, erasers, clippings from magazines and newspapers of blouses that the participant likes, blouse fabric swatches, drafting tape, 12 or 18 inch transparent ruler, clear 1.88 inch wide packaging tape, colored duck or artist tape - narrow, wide, or medium width. If each participant brings one roll of colored tape, then the class can share the various colors with each other. Kit Fee: $12 Optional textbook, From Conception to Production, 15 chapter textbook that covers the material in the seminar - $80 (wholesale) Laurel Hoffman Laurel Hoffmann is experienced in production patternmaking, sample making, and couture. This has enabled her to scale down and personalize industrial fashion technology so it can be used effectively in home businesses. She first worked in a couture shop on the Main Line in Philadelphia, then worked in designing departments,including industrial bridal couture.

14 14 Having tested her material over 20 years in college classrooms, she is completing a series of books that present high-end design room procedures. She now has her own school in Oreland, PA. 3. Carol Kimball Fashion Illustration Fashion Illustration made accessible for all levels of skill. Use of templates and some quick tricks mean anyone can learn to sketch any design at a level suitable for developing a line, discussing options with clients, or simply working up ideas. Kit Fee: All skill levels are fine. Must have some manual dexterity such as is needed to design and sew Office supply white-out pen is useful. Colors (crayons, markers or Prismacolor pencils) are strongly recommended. I will bring and share crayons. $60.00 This will include a Master Sketch Pad. Attendees who already have this will have their kit fee accordingly pro-rated Carol Kimball Carol Kimball has been a full-time professional artist for thirty-five years, much of it in clothing design and pattern making/construction, from couture bridal to commercial lines to medical prostheses. She has built historical recreations for several museums, created a dozen lifesized soft sculpture ventriloquist dummies, illustrated a number of books, and taught (among others) Fashion Sketching and Theatrical Costuming. In her copious spare time, she is usually knitting.

Linda Stewart Alterations for Professionals This Master Class is geared to the sewer who wants to become an alterations specialist, or already has an alterations business and desires to improve skills. Nearly every type of basic alteration is covered including hemming, letting out/taking in side seams, adjusting collars, cuffs, necklines and shoulders. Instruction will also include challenging problems such as clients with high hips, stooped shoulders, large busts or protruding tummies. The class teaches show to analyze and fit ready to wear garments to maximize comfort and make your clients look their best. Intermediate to Advanced sewers who want to start an alterations business or improve an existing business Pins for marking their own garment. Several garments they would like to have analyzed and pinned. Students will be contacted in advance of class with specifics. Kit Fee: None Linda Stewart Linda Stewart established her series Alterations for Professionals to train Alterations Specialists in Her classes draw students from across the US and Canada. She has 3 books on CD, Alterations for Professionals and Bridal & Formal Wear for Professionals and Alterations for the Home Sewer. Linda is an award winning designer and a 2006 & 2007 Bernina Fashion Designer. She is a member of ASDP and served on their Board of Directors in various positions for 9 years. Linda helped to launch the ASDP Master Sewing and Design Professionals Certification Program and is herself MSDP Certified.

Best known as the technique used by the mola makers of the San Bias Islands, it looks decidedly up-scale and sophisticated when made from silk! Learn how to choose colors for maximum effect; cut and fuse four layers of silk to a stiff foundation. Get your stitch on as you add free motion and programmed details with decorative threads. This tiny 8x8 inch masterpiece is finished with a suede handle, optional beaded edges and tassel. None Small, sharp scissors. Variegated rayon or metallic thread for decorative stitching. Neutral sewing thread and bobbin thread. Kit Fee: $40.00 June Colburn Twelve years in Japan! What a wonderful opportunity to learn about Japanese textiles, design and color concepts! June took advantage of every opportunity to visit museums, galleries, kimono shops and temple sales. She brought home ideas for translating Asian images into stunning designs blending both new and traditional American sewing techniques and fabrics. June is a noted teacher and lecturer who loves to promote international understanding through the textile arts. Her students appreciate both her depth of knowledge and her ability to share her insights.

18 18 2. Dianne Frewer Quick Books How to negotiate the software so data can be saved and recalled. Learn the terminology of QB so the student can find answers to their questions. Begin creating files which can be expanded and continued when the student returns home. Kit Fee: Basic Math skills; knowledge of your computer in order to open Quick Books, save and re-open. Any understanding of basic bookkeeping is helpful but not required. Computer preloaded with QB -at least version Quick Books Pro is helpful but not required. None Dianne Frewer I have been working since graduation in 1968 in some facet of bookkeeping, all the while sewing. One of my first jobs was for Arkla Gas, a utility company, then several banks, a police department and currently, a law firm. All of these jobs were bookkeeping and I have always kept my own books as a sewing professional and prepared my own taxes.

19 19 3. Pamela Leggett Personalized Dress Form A dress form is a useful tool for garments and design. The problem is getting one to fit all your curves and scallops. Custom made forms are expensive and can t be easily altered. In class we will use an adjustable form to build and pad it to look just like you! Finish the form with a custom cover and be ready for your fitting and design challenges. If you don t have a form, you can order the My Double from Steve s Sewing (Philadelphia area) and have it delivered to the conference. For a nominal fee, they will even ship it back to your home. A smile, sense of humor, and not being freaked out by how your body has changed! Upon registration you will be sent instructions. 21 21 5. Sarah Veblen The 10 Most Common Pants Fitting Issues Pants are relatively simple to sew but can be extremely difficult to fit. Through the years of fitting hundreds of students and clients, fitting expert Sarah Veblen has identified ten fitting issues that commonly occur when fitting pants. While some fitting issues are more prevalent on certain body types, these ten issues are commonly found on all figures. Sarah will focus on fitting every-day pants (slacks), more briefly relating the fitting issues to jeans and trousers. Sarah will also discuss how to solve the problems, and how a fitting grid makes the process of obtaining a flattering fit much easier. Some sewing and fitting experience is helpful but not necessary Volunteers to bring pants muslins to be fit during the afternoon. In this hands-on class, we ll explore one of the most basic stitches in beading the Peyote Stitch. But we ll transform this simple technique into unique, one-of-a-kind scissor fob projects. We ll learn some of the twists and turns that make this traditional stitch so versatile. You ll be amazed, and probably addicted at how easy beadwork really is. She s had two wearable art ensembles debut in the Houston International Fashion Show, as well as winning Best Construction and Audience Awards for her 2013 Threads Challenge entry. This workshop will teach you how to check your sleeve before cutting to get a "puckerless" cap, put in a flawless bound sleeve head and set shoulder pads that will never show through. Then finish off the sleeve with a mitered vent that takes only minutes to learn and perfect. None. Previously she was Manager of the Illinois International Trade Center at College of DuPage providing assistance to small and medium sized businesses interested in exporting their products and/or services to overseas markets. She was involved with the Center for Entrepreneurship for eight years and advised hundreds of businesses. Her clients achieved increased domestic sales of $13.5 million, export sales of $46 million, and funding of $1.175 million.

Barbie officially opened her alterations and custom sewing business in 1994, and joined ASDP (then PACC) in She attended her first ASDP conference in 2000, and has been to each conference since! Working with the armhole and the shape of the arm to determine the best pattern and fit for set in sleeves for jackets and fitted blouses. We will cover 1, 2 and 3 pc sleeves, proper grainlines, fitting different arm and shoulder shapes on the bodice (armhole). Flat pattern demos and exercises, and muslin demos. 34 34 2. Pamela Leggett Collars & Lapels -A New Twist on Tailoring This class will show you some innovative new techniques to let you achieve the best -and most accurate- collars and lapels ever! The techniques are not limited to just tailoring, but are also very useful on blouses, dresses and unstructured jackets. They are guaranteed to cut your sewing time by a third and always look professional. You will learn about no fail interfacings, understitching, perfect corners, pressing and more. Her desire to help women make flattering garments led her to the Palmer/Pletsch pattern fitting method, which she has used to help women achieve good fit and a renewed love of garment sewing. It s with this knowledge that she created Pamela s Patterns, which have many fitting solutions and adjustments built in to the patterns. pamela is the instructor for the Palmer/Pletsch East School of Sewing, and recently completed two Serger Techniques DVD s with Threads Magazine.

35 35 3. Historical Tour A Stitch in Time We will split into two groups and each depart for one of two locations, then switch! We will walk a short distance to Elfreth s Alley, the oldest residential neighborhood in America, where we will meet author and president of Philly s Tour Guide Association, Bob Skiba, for a guided tour of the Mantua Maker s House. The oldest residence in the neighborhood, it was originally a dressmaker s shop with living quarters above. Our guide will share with us how small, home-based businesses like this changed the lives and futures of women in the New World and began a tradition that many in our own group carry on to this day! Many of the artifacts are from Bob s private collection. Our other stop will be the Betsy Ross House, where we have a very special experience planned! Their newest exhibit, Dressing the Bed, is a unique ongoing living history exhibition featuring Betsy Ross, in her upholstery shop, stitching bed curtains using 18 th century hand-sewing 4:45pm Last Hurrah Afternoon Tea!

The board members will also be present giving members the opportunity to ask questions regarding individual board positions as well as how the board works in general. Heavy hors d oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. Fashion Show and Member Showcase Friday evening October 17 we will have our member showcase, fashion show, and Threads Challenge presentation. The runway show will start at 7:30 pm with the challenge winners being announced at the end of the show. We will be presenting Judith Neukam with the ASDP Lifetime Achievement Award at the fashion show.
