4 DRESS CODES IN THE PRESS "When ironclad office dress codes loosened up in the early 1990s, employees looked to the boss for cues in achieving a casual -- but not slovenly -- look. But today, the question of what to wear in business meetings and interviews outside the office is particularly fraught with traps and land mines." "The fashion world is no help, slinging around terms like "corporate casual," "business casual," "smart casual" and just plain "casual" to describe dressing down. Dale Winston, president of New York recruiter Battalia Winston International, says there is ample room for error, what with the riot of different interpretations of casual attire she sees during visits to corporate clients." -The Wall Street Journal "I hadn't realized people were looking at my clothes," says Murren, who is chief executive of the Nevada Cancer Institute. "It was like an epiphany." -The Daily Transcript "Knowing precisely what to wear isn't always easy, especially when there are as many rules and interpretations of the rules as there are clothing options. Part of the problem is that clear, easily understood explanations of casual dress codes are still rare. With an expanding mosaic of loosely-defined terms such as business casual, dressy casual and sports casual, it's no wonder people regularly show up for events in the wrong attire, or throw up their hands and opt for the safest, blandest dress possible" "The pendulum is swinging back in favor of more formal dress, workplace experts say, and along with this trend have come some thorny new issues for organizations trying to enforce more image-conscious dress habits." -Presentations "Company dress codes are a never-ending battle in the working world. Battle No. 1: Employees misinterpret the dress code or they don't abide by it. Battle No. 2: Companies have a code in place but don't enforce it. Battle No. 3: Companies don't have a dress code but they still reprimand employees for wearing certain attire. Or, Battle No. 4: There's constant objection from certain industries along the lines of, "Why do I have to look nice at work if I don't see anybody?" "How you dress plays a critical role in how others perceive you at work. Dressing professionally in the office, despite the urge to wear a tank top and shorts, will help you project a motivated image to your boss and co-workers." -CNN
