33 the Isabella Oliver heritage Our founder, Baukjen launched the brand 12 years ago. We asked her to tell us more... Why did you launch Isabella Oliver? I made every mistake in the book when it came to dressing when I was pregnant with my first child. Let s just say that oversized shirts and giant sweaters did not make for a stylish nine months but there were very few options. I couldn t believe how difficult it was. Women don t suddenly stop wanting to look stylish just because they have a bump. In fact, at a time when your confidence can feel quite shaky, it s never more important. I wanted to fix this. That was 12 years ago now and I m very proud with how much Isabella Oliver has achieved. What are your priorities for Isabella Oliver? Quality. Quality is exceptionally important for us. We believe you only need to buy a few great pieces to take you through your pregnancy. Great quality means these pieces will last so a small investment gives optimum rewards. Women don t want throwaway fashion anymore especially not with maternity wear. That s not to say they don t still want stylish clothing. They absolutely do and so another of our priorities is to design desirable pieces women genuinely want to wear. And finally, we want to make dressing easy so our pieces grow with you. There s no need to size up or to buy for different stages. There are a lot of pregnancy style myths and rules, what has your experience taught you about these? There are a lot of misconceptions. The obvious one is that people think they have to wear something baggy and although certain styles can work, fitted pieces are very flattering and look and feel really chic. Our design signature is very much based around supporting the bump to create a beautiful figure-hugging silhouette. You re a businesswoman and a mother of three. How do you make it work? It s a balancing act. Women are faced with a lot of demands today and we all put a lot of additional pressures on ourselves. I m especially lucky to have a talented team and a very supportive family who help make it all possible. I m also very faithful with how I spend my time with my kids. From the time I walk through the door, to the time they go to bed, I'm with them. Homework, bath time or watching cartoons it doesn t matter, that s our time. But then my husband Geoff is the company s CEO so it s easier to be flexible. If we do need to continue working on something after this, we can. I absolutely consider myself lucky to have been able to take so many opportunities and run with them. And finally: Pregnancy is a unique experience. I loved being pregnant every time. I don t miss the heartburn and tiredness though! Baukjen's pregnancy tips I loved taking long luxurious baths. Use warm rather than hot water and steal some time for just you.
