The knowledge and expertise of the skilled craft of shoemaking have been handed down from generation to generation, and provide you with the assurance that our products always offer the highest level of quality and comfort. At the beginning of the 60s we invented the first flexible cork, deep footbed the Birkenstock footbed, which provides the comfort that your feet need on hard floors. It is modeled on the natural shape of a healthy foot and offers a very similar sensation to that of walking on soft surfaces. In this way, the Birkenstock footbed has a positive effect on your general well-being. In order to offer you an optimal fit, our deep footbed is available in two widths: normal width for normal feet and narrow width for slender feet. In each case the upper materials are perfectly matched to the respective width. In addition, the adjustable strap enables you to perfectly adjust our shoes to fit your feet. We began offering our products worldwide at a very early stage. We currently distribute our entire portfolio of products in over 80 countries and on all continents across the globe. The Birkenstock footbed is receiving everincreasing recognition, and in Germany we enjoy an enviable brand awareness level of over 80 percent. 6 The Fitness-Sandals Well-being starts with the feet At the beginning of the 60s Birkenstock introduced its first sandal known then, as it is today as the Fitness Sandal. An ever growing number of consumers also wanted to enjoy the comfort offered by these sandals inside and outside the home particularly as they offered a welcome change from narrow and pointed fashion shoes and shoes with a heel. Compared to other sandals, walking in Fitness Sandals provide a surprisingly different sensation as the wearer immediately notices a higher degree of muscle activity. The relationship between the strap and the footbed stimulates a gripping reflex in the foot during each step which leads to a tensing of the toe and calves muscles, after which the muscles then relax again. During the action of walking, this continual alternation between the tensing and relaxing of the muscles exercises the feet and legs and improves circulation. Furthermore, it firms the connective tissue and improves the shock absorbing characteristics of the sole of the foot. The combination of these design features ensures that the foot fits naturally and is supported properly, as well as improving the posture of the entire body which ultimately leads to an improved level of well-being. Those who are reluctant to forego their fashion shoes should ensure that they regularly give their feet a change by treating them to the unique level of comfort offered by Birkenstock. Further information concerning foot health can be found from page 46 onwards. The Birkenstock footbed is flexible, thereby assisting the natural rolling motion of the foot.
