2 Avant-garde eyewear goes to Florence In September: DaTE, the event dedicated to the eyewear industry that brings together experimentation, innovation, luxury, fashion and contemporary styles, paving the way for new cultural trends. The fifth edition of DaTE, the event dedicated to innovative eyewear encapsulating different worlds, personalities, identities and ways of conceiving an object creatively designed, will take place in the enchanting city of Florence, a focal point for tourists from across the world. DaTE will take place between 23 and 25 September 2017 at the Leopolda, one of the first train stations in Italy, a stone s throw away from the Santa Maria Novella train station. The location embodies the spirit of the event thanks to its commitment to creativity and originality, where more than 100 companies from across the world will present their own creations in an attempt to dazzle industry experts. All exhibition areas have already sold out, clearly demonstrating that avant-garde eyewear brands are showing an ever-growing interest in the coolest event that the industry has to offer, where experimental and innovative eyewear go hand-in-hand with luxury, fashion and contemporary styles. DaTE arises from the ideas and willpower of passionate people with expert knowledge and love for eyewear who never stop taking challenges and pursuing dreams shared with equally passionate visitors. Last year at The Mall in Milan, more than 2,300 visitors, both buyers and experts, attended the event. DaTE will be open from 10am to 7pm on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 September, and from 10am to 5pm on Monday 25 September, with free admission. The website is constantly updated and the entire exhibitor catalogue and registration form will soon be available, enabling visitors to print their entry pass directly. 3 WestGroupe: new partnership with Spectill WestGroupe has appointed Spectill as its new distributor for their Fysh UK, KLiiK denmark and Superflex brands in South Africa. This partnership began in May 2017 and aims to facilitate the sale of WestGroupe s three collections in South Africa by combining WestGroupe s eyewear expertise with Spectill s knowledge of the local market. Over the past 20 years, Spectill has established itself as the leading optical supply company in South Africa. Their focus on developing solid, mutually beneficial, longterm relationships and their understanding of the South African eyewear market lead us to believe that this new partnership will strengthen our position and business in South Africa, said WestGroupe President, Michael Suliteanu. Safilo: a new exclusive partnership for Saudi Arabia Safilo Group announced an exclusive distribution agreement with Dr. Mazen Fakeeh C. Healthcare Company for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, starting from mid-june Concurrently, the Group renews its partnership with Optitalia Gulf for the independent retail distribution across Safilo s other GCC countries, building on its partnership of over 25 years. A world-class eyewear experience will be offered to local retailers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the two new Jeddah and Riyadh showrooms. In 2016, the Group saw exceptionally strong growth across its IMEA region, with double-digit growth for the second consecutive year. The dedicated regional focus served to build awareness and distribution of Safilo s brand portfolio across the GCC countries and channels. Alyson Magee is back Seven years on from her debut line - licensed by Alain Mikli - and after more than three decades designing for the world s best known luxury brands, Alyson Magee returns to the helm of her eponymous line with a new collection of sun and optical frames for men and women: Foundations. Magee creates a perfect tension between aesthetics and engineering in her frames; an almost jarring light treatment juxtaposes the manicured styling and structural direction throughout. This is also translated across the collection with the punctuation of classic square and circular shapes with vibrant colour, refined by her focus on micro details and tempered with complex constructions that push conventional boundaries. Oakley is the Title Sponsor of Mugello Dorna Sports and Oakley announced global eyewear brand Oakley as the Title Sponsor of the Italian Grands Prix in both 2017 and 2018, with the events to be known as the Gran Premio d Italia Oakley. 4 Completion of the first stage in the E-Sun TM Kolor Up TM project The first stage has completed of the project promoted by Essilor Sun Solution TM with the European Institute of Design (IED) in Turin for development of a concept frame, a communication campaign and marketing tools based on E-SUN TM KOLOR UP TM, the company s brand and sunglass lens technology. The three best entries were selected from those presented by the thirteen third-year students on the Jewellery Design Course (which also includes a specific module on eyewear design held by designer Roberto Russo). Given the high quality of the work presented, a further five were also selected for special mentions. A further 13 projects, one by each entrant, were chosen and, until September, can be voted for on the company s website. The student getting the most votes will receive the Digital Media mention at the prize ceremony at Silmo 2017 in Paris. Abet laminates for eyewear designed by Nina Mûr Continual research into possible applications of laminate in different sectors has today seen Abet Laminati accept a new challenge: collaboration with Nina Mûr, a Spanish brand that produces eyewear with high quality content. Nina Mûr was recently set up in Madrid by Lorena Serrano and Davide Fichera, partners in life and at work. They decided to join forces and experience in the world of design, communication and eyewear to launch an ambitious project involving the independent manufacture of glasses made from birch wood; light yet resistant, featuring a process that combines technology and craftsmanship. Nina Mûr has produced its first collection, using Abet laminates, for which it has chosen an Italian name: Mobile, a clear homage to the world of design and furnishings to which the company in Bra belongs. Moscot collaborates with Uncrate The New York brand has created the Moscot X Uncrate Ipish limited edition with Uncrate, the lifestyle and menswear guide. This partnership comes out of a shared, common attention to high-quality, well-made products and expresses the philosophy of both brands: quality, no-frills, sharp design, functionality. 5 Design, fashion & lifestyle Contemporary Nomadism Last week, Moleskine participated at Pitti Uomo 92 in Florence, Italy, by presenting an exclusive preview of a new collection: the Nomad bags. The line, which targets the year-old public, is the tangible expression of the Contemporary Nomadism loved by the brand followers and includes a black notebook and a bag. The Classic collection, designed by Giulio Iacchetti, paraded its absolutely essential soul in the scenario of the Florentine fair. Together with these two collections, Moleskine also exhibited the capsule collection of Classic bags decorated by New York street artist Bradley Theodore. To round things off, the Florence Moleskine Store also displayed some backpacks decorated by the artist for the duration of Pitti Uomo 92. Grohe wins five 2017 Red Dot Awards IGuzzini illuminates the Eurasia Tunnel IGuzzini Illuminazione, a company specialised in architectural illumination worldwide, has supplied and installed more than 2,000 lighting devices inside the Eurasia Tunnel. The stretch of motorway, symbol of the mobility between the two continents, connects Kazlicesme the European part of Istanbul to the Asian part of Göztepe. The Croatian firm of Skira Architectural Lighting Design elaborated the lighting project, which features a particular interwoven pattern of lines of lights and the use of the colour blue: the colour reflects the iconographic elements of Turkish tradition, while the linear pattern recalls the geometric figures used in the decoration of carpets, tiles, and buildings. The Red Dot Award is one of the most coveted and recognised international design awards: this year Groher broke the record by winning five awards. With these awards, the company has consolidated its position as sector leader in water and sanitary installations. The protagonists of this success are the Groher Blue Home water filtration system, the Sensia Arena shower toilet, the Lineare bath mixer line, and the Concetto and Essence Professional kitchen tap mixers.
