Interview with Barbara Wessels Sanitätshaus Arnold Leonberg (Medical supply store, Germany) Ms Wessels, how do your patients respond to the variety of flat-knit trend colours and patterns? B. Wessels Patients respond very well to the range of trend colours and patterns. They also see that we make use of this variety. For example, in summer I like to wear shorts with compression stockings. This way we show our customers that they don t need to hide their compression wear. Many customers are pleasantly surprised with the modern look of care products today. The fear of wearing granny stockings is quickly lost when they see the colours and patterns of our flat-knit products. Cherry red, anthracite and aqua are particularly popular. In the patterns, the Pyramids and Ribs are a firm favourite as well as the Pyramid and Stripe pattern. However, the new Fashion-Elements are an absolute highlight. How are the new Fashion-Elements received by your customers? B. Wessels They are thrilled. The range is so unique and playful. When our customers see the different patterns and colours for the first time, they say things like: wow, fantastic or finally something bright and bold with patterns and colours. I love to wear all three patterns, the Ornaments and Crosses in the colour berry and the Animal pattern in grey. They are really great for mixing and matching with all kinds of clothing. Especially if you prefer to wear more muted colours, the Fashion-Elements are a real eye-catcher. How did you make your customers aware of the new range? B. Wessels In this case, we had an event, to which we invited all our flat-knit customers and which we also advertised in the newspaper. 21 Barbara Wessels is a lipo-lymphoedema patient and has been running the Sanitätshaus (medical supply store) Arnold in Leonberg with her husband since Since 2012 she has managed the in-house lymph competence centre. The expert for the treatment of venous and oedema patients is happy to share her own experience in compression therapy and encourages patients to choose trend colours. In the interview she also reports about why non-medical accessories are very important for patient compliance. living with lipo- and lymphoedema and we had a medical doctor on site who is an expert in this field. However, the Fashion-Elements fashion show was the absolute highlight. Four patients, one of them a man, took part. When they presented the designs with different outfits there was many an impressed murmur in the audience. I immediately noticed that the Fashion-Elements are a real hit not surprisingly, they are after all a real innovation in flat-knit care products. various aspects of their disease with other patients from the region. The advantage of fashion shows is that one can show patients how to combine the different colours and patterns of compression products with different types of clothing. They can visualise the result. Ms Wessels, thank you for the interview. Our customers loved that legs look slimmer in the patterns and that they were able to see with what type of clothing the patterns can be combined. For example, we showed everyday outfits matched with Animals, and Crosses with business attire. The presentation of the Ornaments pattern with evening wear created a huge buzz. What are your experiences with events e.g. a fashion show for the new Fashion-Elements? B. Wessels We regularly hold events, also in cooperation with Lymphnetz-Schwaben e.v.; usually around 30 to 50 customers attend. From our perspective this is a great success, because for patients this means that they are being brave and stepping out of anonymity. 22 Many oedema patients also see compression garments as a fashion accessory. Interview with Martina Glomb Professor of Fashion Design studies at Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Germany Dear Prof. Glomb, you have overcome breast cancer and you wore a compressive sleeve. How did you find the sleeve? Prof. Glomb I always dealt very openly with my illness. But the beige sleeves available at that time did not match my positive attitude. Even as a designer I found it difficult to integrate the sleeve fashionably in my everyday life. But this aspect is so incredibly important: You want to cast your illness aside instead of thinking about the treatment all the time. What patterns and colours would you have wanted for your sleeve? Prof. Glomb I would have loved wild patterns, tattoo shapes and vibrant colours. When I stood up without any hair in front of my students and told them what had happened to me, they broke out in spontaneous tumultuous applause and offered me so much encouragement and comfort. I would have been able to enjoy this moment with much more pride and far more confidently, if I had been wearing a cherry red sleeve or one with a cool pattern. Do you believe that fashionable variety is important for compression therapy for oedema patients? Prof. Glomb Absolutely, yes. I have met a lot of people who deal very proactively with their disease and the treatment methods. They want colours; many patients want to see compression hosiery as a fashionable accessory, not as a medical device. medi offers new two-tone fashion elements. How do you like the designs Crosses, Animal and Ornaments? Prof. Glomb It is important to allow for more colourfulness, patterns and zest in life. The Crosses pattern is my favourite. The grey coloured stockings match a black dress, I'm sure you can imagine all sorts of colour compositions. What piece of advice on the topic of fashion and compression would you like to give oedema patients to take away with them? Prof. Glomb I was always full of the joys of life in every phase of my disease, even during the difficult times. The people around me, my job and my clothes gave me the strength I needed. I have always dressed in brightly coloured clothes that matched my feelings. It's important to adjust your approach and risk something you've never tried before every now and then, particularly in times of uncertainty. Professor Glomb, many thanks for the interview. Prof. Martina Glomb, born in Bremen, worked many years as Chief Designer at the fashion legend Vivienne Westwood in London. Since 2005 she has taught fashion design at the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 she wore a compressive sleeve, to prevent a lymphoedema.
