4 Page 3 FASHION REVUE TIPS FROM THE JUDGES 1. Smile It s the best accessory! 2. Accessories Accessories should be age appropriate. Less is more; don t over or under accessorize. Make certain they are the right size for the overall look of the outfit. 3. Pressing Press, press, and press some more! Use starch (sparingly) to make stubborn cottons behave. Watch for seam puckering. Take wool garments to dry cleaners and have pressed. NEVER sit in your garment prior to judging! 4. Hemlines Wear skirts and pants straight on the waistline. This will greatly impact the hem. Watch hemline length and keep hemlines straight. 5. Length In skirts and shorts, please check that the length is appropriate. Not all body shapes fit standard pattern lengths. 6. Footwear Watch color and style. Must match outfit. Be sure shoe style and heel height are age appropriate. For PJ s, socks/footies are good choices if slippers cannot be found that match. For open-toes shoes, polish your toenails. No flip-flops. Page 12 Preteens may enter dress, jumpers, skirt, pants, shorts, vest, sweaters, shirt/blouse, jacket or a combination of garments. All entries must be made form loomed, knitted or felted fabric or yarn of a minimum 60% wool. Juniors, seniors and adults may enter: One piece garments - dress, jumpers, lined outwear jackets, coats and capes. Two piece garments - lined outwear coats, jackets or capes, blouse/shirt, vest, and/or sweater with dress, jumper, skirt, pants or shorts. Ensemble - 3 or more garments worn together at one time. For additional information, a rules pamphlet and/or entry form, please contact Robyn Heine in writing at 1265 Governors Lane, Zionsville, IN 46077, by telephone (317) or robynheine@yahoo.com. Website: A 4-H project garment which complies with the rules of the contest may be entered in this contest. Garments chosen for the 4-H exhibit at the State Fair can be temporarily released for entry in this contest. Place a note on your garment when delivering it for State Fair exhibition if you are planning to check it out for this contest. 7. Zippers Invisible zippers are a great choice for formal wear. 8. Undergarments Watch fit of bodices. Wear undergarments that match outfit and don t show from the outside. Wear slips when needed. Wear padded bras when needed. 9. Skin Tone Make sure the garment color works with your skin tone. If your outfit is for outdoors your skin color (fake tan) needs to go along with it (swim suit). 10. Modeling Switch up your stance when modeling lined garments (will flow better). Let your personality show and add your own style. Relax & model with ease.

5 Page 11 GARMENT CHECK-IN All outfits modeled in Fashion Revue must be checked in during Project Check-In on Tuesday, July 10 from 12 noon - 6 p.m. at the fairgrounds in the ECCC (Elkhart County Community Center). Accessories will be exhibited only for Senior Division Champions and the Junior Revue Grand Champion. INDIANA MAKE IT YOURSELF WITH WOOL CONTEST The contest will be held at the Indiana State Fair. Dates TBA. Entry forms for the contest are due on July 1, Registration begins at 9:30am and fashion show is at 2:00pm. The person to contact if you are interested is Robyn Heine, robynheine@yahoo.com What are the objectives? To promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns. To encourage personal creativity in sewing, knitting and crocheting with wool fabrics and yarns. To recognize creative skills. What fabrics/yarns can I use? Fabrics/yarns that can be used should be 100% wool or wool blend (minimum of 60% wool or specialty fiber) for each fashion fabric or yarn used. Specialty wool fibers include mohair, cashmere, alpaca, camel and llama. The entire garment body (back, front and sleeves) must be wool or wool-blend fabric. Trims, facings, linings, interfacings and underlinings may be fabrics other than wool or wool blends. Judging Criteria: Appropriateness to contestant s lifestyle Coordination of fabric/yarn with garment style and design Contestant s presentation Construction quality Creativity Judging is private and the judge s decision is final The contestant's category is determined by the contestant's age as of January 1, Anyone regardless of race, creed or sex who meets age and other guidelines may participate. Contestants must select, construct and model their own garments. Contestants may compete in one of four age categories: Preteen - age 12 and under Junior - ages 13 through 16 Senior - ages 17 through 24 Adult - age 25 and older STATE FASHION REVUE Page 4 4-H State Fashion Revue judging takes place in August at the Indiana State Fair. The top 15 from each division will model their garments in the Farm Bureau Building at the Indiana State Fair, when top award winners will be announced. The exact dates for these events will be announced at a later time. Senior Division winners should stop at the information table during the fair and pick up their packets. Senior Division youth whose garment wins for construction and Fashion Revue in Elkhart County, will be asked to choose one category for their State Fair entry. You will be notified if you need to choose. FASHION REVUE IS AN ACTIVITY, NOT A PROJECT You do not need to enter your garment in construction to participate in Fashion Revue. You cannot complete the sewing project if you do not have your garment judged in construction. An outfit is defined as clothing that could be worn without additional garments and be considered acceptable to wear in public. In senior categories - no half garments may be modeled i.e. not just blouses or skirts. In grade 3-7 you only need to sew the part of the outfit that you entered for construction. Other garments may be purchased or sewn by others. Accessories are defined as accents that add to the total look and do not need to be sewn by the 4-H er. Read project requirements: A suit is two pieces. If you have sewn the blouse, it is now considered separates (3 pieces). If you have purchased a blouse, the blouse is an accessory. A jumper could be paired with a purchased blouse as an accessory for Fashion Revue.

6 Page 5 ADVANCED WEARABLE EXHIBITS LEVELS C & D 4-H ers entering wearable exhibits in the advanced sewing categories (grades 8 and higher) will need to identify one of the following six categories in which to enter their exhibit. These same categories are used for Fashion Revue. In Fashion Revue, senior members may exhibit one outfit in each category. In sewing, only one wearable construction entry is permitted. One State Fair entry will be chosen for each category. SKILLS CARD REQUIRED FOR CONSTRUCTION Page 10 The sewing curriculum is based on demonstrating sewing skills in wearable and/or non-wearable items. You will be required to complete a Sewing Project Exhibit Card to have with your garment at construction judging. One card must accompany each construction entry. State Fair entries must have these cards sent with their articles (BOTH wearable and non-wearable entries). The number of skills required are: Grade 3 - Minimum of two skills DEFINITION OF AN OUTFIT: An outfit is a garment or garments that when put together make a complete look - such as one or two piece dress, or one or two piece pant suit, or a three piece combination, such as pants, vest, and blouse or shirt. Informal or Casual Wear: A complete outfit of 1 or 2 pieces suitable for school, weekend, or casual, informal activities. Grade 4 - Minimum of two skills Grade 5 - Minimum of three skills Grade 6 - Minimum of four skills Grade 7 - Minimum of five skills Dress Up: This is suitable for special, church, or social occasions that are not considered to be formal. It may be an outfit of one or more pieces with or without its own costume coat or jacket (lined or unlined). This is not an outfit that would be worn to school, weekend, or casual, informal activities. Free Choice: A complete outfit comprised of garments that do not fit in the other classifications. Examples include: tennis wear, swim wear, athletic or sportswear, lounge wear, riding habits, historic, dance, theatrical, or international costumes, capes, and unlined coats. Suit or Coat: The suit consists of two pieces including a skirt or pants and its own lined jacket. It is not a dress with jacket as in dress up wear. The coat is a separate lined coat. It will be judged separately as a coat with its own accessories. Separates: Consists of three garments that must be worn as a coordinated complete outfit. Each piece should be versatile enough to be worn with other garments. Formal Wear: This outfit may be one or more pieces suitable for any formal occasion, such as proms, weddings, and formal evening functions. Grades Minimum of six skills All senior categories require a complete outfit. Check category definitions. Check your project manuals for more detailed requirements. Sewing Skills cards are available at the Purdue Extension office and on the Purdue Extension website, Sewing Curriculum: 1. The sewing curriculum requires you to enter the sewing level according to your grade in school, regardless of sewing experience. You may choose to go above and beyond the guidelines set for your grade, but you must enter your garment(s) according to your grade. 2. The sewing curriculum is based on demonstrating sewing skills in wearable and/or non-wearable items. For construction, you will be required to complete a Sewing Project Exhibit Card and have with your exhibit. 3. You are not required to have the garment entered in construction to enter Fashion Revue. You must have sewn the garment entered in Fashion Revue. 4. For construction, you may enter one wearable and one non-wearable sewing item. No partial outfits will be accepted in Senior Fashion Revue (grades 8-12 only), or construction. You must have sewn an entire outfit for entry.
