8 FASHION WINTER IS HERE Comfort is key this season. Celebrated designer Dhruv Kapur lists the fashion must-haves to keep you warm and on-point Nostalgia plays a vital role in determining a season s trends. I find that the world the fashion fraternity, in particular dips into its collective consciousness to create ideas that speak to a wide audience. And because what affects people invariably affects the fashion of the time, the rules of dressing for winter are heavily influenced by what s happening around us. Here s my cheat sheet of all the important upgrades for your wardrobe: Metallic leather boots, price on request, Tommy Hilfiger, available at DLF Promenade and FOR MEN Many of us have spent over a year pondering (perhaps some of us celebrating) what went so wrong that Donald Trump and his narrow world view came to control the most powerful office on the planet. Nonetheless, it has been established that the time now belongs to a class of men that not-so-long-ago felt left behind. The dadcore trend is a celebration of this forgotten all-american man the one who never left his small town, who wore his plaid flannel shirt with his 501 jeans every day, who was the bread earner for his high-school girlfriend-turned-wife and their many children. The trend is implying sturdy oversized checked shirts, loose T-shirts and regular fit jeans and sneakers are the standard prescription this winter. For colder days, throw on a checked or tan Prince of Wales overcoat. If you plan to hit the slopes, definitely invest in a quilted puffer. Never before has dressing for utility and comfort been this basic. Enjoy it while it lasts. On the other end, tailoring for men this season is the antithesis of the frugality and the politically charged trends above. It s dandy overload, it s fun, and it redefines masculine dressing in a way that isn t emasculating. Daytime is more colourful, with suits in burgundy, cream or moss green making a silent declaration of masculinity in its new avatar. If you won t go as far (I won t either, so don t feel bad), incorporate these colours under your beige, navy, grey and black suits as turtleneck sweaters for a sophisticated preppy vibe. For the evening, indulge in sparkle with a sequinned lapel suit, in neo-baroque with a floral jacquard, or in plush regality with velvet everything. Invest in a classic tuxedo-style overcoat to go with all your choices. Being graphic is the other menswear revolution to consider joining. Why speak, when your clothes can say it for you? Wearing slogans is the new street, and street style, as we know it, reinvents itself regularly. In a world where opinions have become increasingly polarising, and where staying silent simply won t do, maybe knowing who agrees with your views, before you ever have to speak to them, is a blessing. But for me, the trend doesn t start and end at slogans and statements. By definition, graphics are loud and vivid. And the real reason they re so big in this day and age is because they re Insta-friendly. Designers make what will catch your immediate attention on an Instagram feed, and that s what millennials are looking to buy. Floral prints and big, bold embroideries (of flowers, animals, insects, lips, hearts, stars, and much, much more) are essentially there to capture your attention for that second longer on social media, long enough that you might consider liking the photo, long enough that you might consider buying it. It s quite ironic to subscribe to this trend, I think you choose to rebel by falling victim to the capitalist. But don t let that thought stop you. Find a printed satin bomber, an embellished DIY denim jacket, lots of T-shirts with logos, slogans, embroidery and prints, and roll with it. But feminist theories have advanced since then, and the new power player in the corporate boardroom no longer needs to shun her femininity to make a statement. There s a renewed focus on the waist, and the suits this season make amazing use of pinned pleats to exaggerate volume and enhance the silhouette. These are the most interesting jackets I ve seen in a while and I would definitely consider investing in one. The other suit you should strongly think of is the oversized checked variety, perhaps double-breasted, as though it came from an older man s wardrobe. Combine your power suit with a super-chunky, heeled (think rock-glam) court shoe, and you re sorted. When it comes to winter nights, feverish frivolity is what they call for, and this next trend is perfect for that for forgetting the times we live in, for indulging in excess. If you ever wanted to dress like a shiny disco ball, now is the time. Don t shy away from dresses with crystal, glitter and sequins, with shoes to match. Maximalism has returned, and stores are overflowing with the shiniest embellishments you can dream of a sequinned slip dress might be favoured by some, while others might prefer a strong-shouldered embellished mini. It is winter after all, and I wouldn t want you catching a chill. Team your bling with a statement overcoat consider a sharply tailored style or one with military details. Alternatively, play on the wilder side of fashion by teaming a quilted puffer or oversized embellished biker jacket with your evening look. Choose kitten heels to complete your outfit. You can find them in all styles, but I m partial to embellished satin pumps. The absolute must-have to prove how on-point you are this winter are oversized sweaters the larger the better. It could be a fuzzy white one, maybe a graphic knit with a bear or heart emblazoned across the chest, or perhaps you d prefer a more old-school Fair Isle sweater. Keep it casual with jeans and hiking boots, or turn it up with a belt at the waist and heeled ankle boots. You can also wear a long sweater as a dress, with over-the-knee sock boots, for the ultimate It Girl moment. If the OTK boots are any indication, don t just oversize your sweaters, go XXL on your trench coat, biker jacket, handbag and scarf (think blanket) too. Don t worry it won t be comical. 21 FOOD BINGE HEALTHY Shed those post-party pounds with detox juices and easy-to-make (and easier-to-eat) DIY dishes The festival season might be coming to a close, but it sure has left behind a few extra pounds that threaten to stick around as clear reminders of those many fabulous feasts. However, if you re up for the task of embarking on a fitter journey in the new year, we have you covered with some delectable ideas from the biggest names in the culinary circuit at the DLF Shopping Malls. Why think mind over platter, when you can have both? Get started already. FRESH GREEK SALAD INGREDIENTS 40gm iceberg lettuce and 15gm lollo rosso lettuce (tough stems trimmed off both and torn into bite-sized pieces), 30gm cucumber (seedless, trimmed and cut into chunks), 30gm onions (cut into 1/2-inch wedges, soaked in cold water for 5 minutes and drained), 25gm cherry tomatoes, 15gm capsicum, 15gm red bell pepper, 15gm yellow bell pepper (all peppers trimmed, seeded, and diced), 10gm olives, 50gm feta cheese, 30gm lemon-oregano dressing, 10gm sun-dried tomatoes (cut in half), a lemon wedge, 10ml white vinegar, 1gm salt, 5gm mustard, 30ml olive oil, 1gm black pepper. BLACK STICKY RICE WITH STIR FRY VEGETABLES INGREDIENTS 200gm black, glutinous sticky rice, 1/2 cup boiled black-eyed peas, 1 cup assorted vegetables (carrots, broccoli, baby corn; all chopped), 2tbsp vinegar, 1tbsp sugar, 1/2tsp mustard seeds, 3 cloves garlic (crushed), 1/4tsp ginger, 1 small onion (chopped), 1tbsp butter, 2tbsp oil, 1/4tsp turmeric, 1/2tsp red chilli powder, salt to taste. METHOD Soak the black rice for three hours or longer, and cook in a steamer or rice cooker until it s ready. Now boil the black-eyed peas until they are ready. Heat the butter in a vessel and add half the garlic and chopped onions. Add the cooked peas and sauté. Add salt. Boil the vegetables along with some salt, vinegar and sugar. Heat the oil in a vessel, add mustard seeds, followed by the remaining garlic and ginger. Then add the turmeric and chilli powder, and stir fry for a few minutes. In a serving bowl, add the rice at the bottom, followed by the butter-tossed beans and pickled stir fry vegetables on the side. Chef Ansab Khan, Burma Burma at DLF CYBERHUB METHOD In a bowl, whisk together the fresh lime juice, white vinegar, salt, mustard and oil. Stir in the oregano and pepper, and then set the bowl aside. In a large bowl, scatter the olives, cheese, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, onions and peppers. Add the dressing to this large bowl and mix. Lay the mixture over a bed of lettuce and serve fresh. Chef Dhruv Malik, The Beer Café at DLF Promenade, and DLF CYBERHUB MISO SOUP WITH SEAWEED INGREDIENTS 20gm miso paste, 4gm seaweed, 15ml Kikkoman soy sauce, 20gm bean sprouts, 15gm paneer (cut into cubes), 5gm spring onions (fi nely chopped), 5gm wakame, salt and pepper to taste. METHOD Boil 1 cup of water in a pan. Add the miso paste and soy sauce. Stir the mixture well or until there are no lumps being formed. Add the bean sprouts, paneer and spring onions. Season the soup with salt and pepper to taste. Pour the soup into a bowl and garnish with wakame and seaweed. Serve hot. Chef Ashish Singh, Cafe Delhi Heights at DLF Promenade, DLF Mall Of India, DLF CYBERHUB, RED QUINOA TABOULEH FRUIT AND KALE DETOX SMOOTHIE INGREDIENTS 1 cup spinach, 1 cup kale, 1 ripe banana, 1 cup frozen strawberries or raspberries, 1/2tsp spirulina powder, 2 dates (pitted), 1 cup coconut water, 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk. METHOD Combine all the ingredients in a food processor or juicer. Blend it till it is a thick purée. Pour it into glasses and serve with ice. FoodHall at DLF Promenade, DLF CYBERHUB and LOW-FAT STRAWBERRY SMOOTHIE INGREDIENTS 100gm low-fat milk, 100gm fermented milk (yoghurt), 50gm strawberries, 1 cup ice. METHOD Add all the ingredients (including the ice) to a food processor or juicer. Blend it till it is a thick and smooth purée. Serve chilled. Red Mango at DLF CYBERHUB INGREDIENTS 1 cup quinoa (from the Traditions By FoodHall range), 1 cucumber (fi nely chopped), 1/2 medium-sized red onion (fi nely chopped), 1 tomato (seeded and fi nely chopped), 1 large bunch of cilantro (fi nely chopped), zest of 1 lemon, juice of 1 lemon, 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil, 1tsp salt, freshly cracked black pepper, feta cheese to garnish. METHOD Mix the quinoa with one-and-a-half cups of water in a pan, and bring it to a boil. Then reduce the flame and let the quinoa absorb all the water. This should take 15 minutes. Then, take it off the heat and let it rest for five minutes. Now, fluff it up using a fork. For the dressing, pour all the ingredients except the vegetables and feta cheese into a bowl, and whisk them until you have a nice mix. Add all the chopped vegetables and cooked quinoa to a big bowl, and mix thoroughly. Now pour the dressing on top and mix again. Then cover the bowl, and let the preparation rest for an hour.
