From stabilizing consumer confidence to a renewed sense of activism, the myriad voices in today s cultural conversation are responding first and foremost to the current state of things. As home accents designers begin work on the products that will hit retail floors next year, Home Accents oday predicts color in 2018 will reflect what is rather than what the future could hold. Some color combinations will strike a balance between opposing forces, creating one unified story from contrasting ideas. Others will take a deeper look at our personal well-being, and that of the world around us. Our first palette is nature-inspired, encouraging stewardship of the earth. Rich, warm brown tones intermingle with lush greens, succulent purples and dusty pink for a look that fosters a robust connection with the natural world. he next palette celebrates the new frontier of technological innovation. Electric shades of blue, pink, purple, green and orange teeter on the edge of neon and find synergy with pitchdark tones of black, gray and navy in an ode to today s digital playground. A light, airy and soothing palette follows, promoting inner wellness. Barely-there blues, pinks, purples, greens and yellows converge with warm neutrals to create a relaxing aesthetic that reminds us to slow down and recharge. In the last palette, two distinct color families work together in harmony. Although gray is still an important color, the definition of a neutral is changing in 2017, drawing inspiration from earth and sky with deep rich tones such as putty, clay, shell, sun and water, Wadden said. While gray will continue to be a popular choice for home interiors, it has shifted from blue-based to brown-based grays, creating more balance between cool and warm tones. hese neutral and functional colors will feel fresh and modern throughout the seasons. n

Michelle Lamb, editorial director of he rend Curve, said she expects darks and brights to coexist in 2018 as both embody the public mood in diﬀerent ways. We won t be pessimistic with the dark colors, Lamb said. As we ve begun to already, we ll see floral patterns over a navy blue or a black ground or we ll see something with metallic and it will be beautiful, sophisticated and luxurious. But that anchor of dark will reflect some part of the buying public s emotional state. he flip side of it is actually lucid hues, really bright hues, pops that are almost neon just a little bit of piping or an accent. Just as we saw after a couple of major incidents over the past 10 or 20 years, one side will say, I feel dark therefore I reflect it in dark colors and another group will say, I feel dark therefore I reflect it in bright colors that will be uplifting. It s trend and countertrend. It s not either or. hey will both exist. n

Sustainable design and transparency are the influences behind soft pastels and taupes and warm neutrals, Wadden said. All of the colors share a vision of renewed spirituality, body and soul nourishment and a determination to define a sense of self. Scandinavian design will continue to influence color choices as people are drawn towards layering neutrals with other neutrals for a calm, soothing palette. he Aura palette from Fashion Snoops spring 2018 interiors forecast combines pale blue, blush pink and warm neutrals with a selection of darker mid-tone hues. Aura draws inspiration from spirituality, mindfulness and healing for a look that brings an ethereal element to design. his is where your true blushes and pinks are really coming into play, said Jaye Anna Mize, creative director of home interiors at Fashion Snoops. Metallics are coming in a much more muted statement than ever before. It s almost super brushed. I can t express enough how soft these palettes are. People are truly craving comfort right now, Mize added. A constant conversation we re having is the diﬀerent areas of comfort and what does that really mean to people today. It s way more than a pillow or comfortable bedding. It s the way you sit in the chair. It s the way you design the armrest on the chair to make it more comfortable. Lamb said she expects blues to reflect a yellow cast, imbuing everything from pale blue to deeper values with an aquatic touch. She also predicts the general rise in warmth will provide a welcoming environment for orange. I m not looking for it to be a No. 1 color but I just can t shake it, Lamb said. It s interesting that when you start to look at reds, particularly bright reds, those reds have a slight veil of yellow over them. In that regard, they ve become a pivot point between red and orange. I think it will be easy to work with and fun to work with. And I think especially given the warmth in blues, blues and oranges look pretty good together, even those warm blues and reds that you ve probably started to see coming up in the nautical or coastal looks. he Resourceful palette from the Pantone View Home + Interiors 2018 forecast celebrates the beauty of blue and orange. he color story encourages re-using and re-furbishing what consumers may already own, discovering refreshing combinations of beloved but disparate tones. We went to Maison & Objet and Milan and it really struck us how prevalent this combination was, Eiseman said. If you think in terms of the color wheel, we know that these colors are opposites on the wheel. So your blue never looks bluer than when it s next to orange and your orange never looks more orange than when it s next to blue. As a result, it s really an intense combination. here are all kinds of incantations of blue and orange, ranging from rust to peach or from the more blue-greens to the brighter blues. It s a combination you can t help but look at when you see it." n
