3 GENERAL DUTY HEADSET (GDH) The General Duty Headset (GDH), shown in Figure 1, is a communications system with an attached headband. The GDH can be used in a variety of operating modes and is compatible with the following helmets: U.S. Army Personal Armor System Ground Troops (PASGT) Helmet Tactical Ballistic Helmet (TBH) Marine Lightweight Helmet (LWH) Navy MK-7 Battle Helmet Various hard hats and firefighter s helmets WARNING This headset is not a hearing-protective device. It is designed to allow the user to monitor external sounds. GDH FEATURES Universal size Requires no helmet adjustment Compatible with most existing military and commercial radios and intercoms Provides external sound dampening, yet allows external communications Head-borne weight less than 7.5 ounces Includes infinite positioning flex boom microphone assembly HEADBAND MICROPHONE CROWN STRAP (CAN BE ADDED TO HEADSET AS NEEDED) EARCUP Can be used with or without a helmet Can be worn in either single or dual earcup mode Easy to maintain and hygienically safe UPPER CORD Figure 1. 5 FITTING Fitting procedures consist of donning and adjusting the headset (in dual earcup mode), adding the crown strap (optional) and switching to single earcup mode (optional). Donning and Adjusting Headset (Dual Earcup Mode) 1. Don the headset with the microphone on the left side. Ensure that the earcups are centered over the ears and that the earphones are contained within the earcups. LEFT ADJUSTMENT SLIDE LEFT 2. Tighten or loosen the front left adjustment slide (Figure 3) and the right rear adjustment slide (Figure 4) until a stable fit is achieved. 3. Adjust the microphone to the proper operating position. 6 Adding Crown Strap (Optional) If necessary (to maintain position of the headset), remove the headset, and add the crown strap as follows: 1. Referring to Figure 5, release the left front buckle and slide the two front headband straps through the front crown strap loops. (The front crown straps are shorter than the rear straps.) Fasten the left front buckle. REAR CROWN STRAP LOOPS REAR CROWN STRAP LEFT 2. Release the right rear buckle and slide the two rear crown strap loops onto the headband. (The rear crown straps are longer than the front straps.) Fasten the rear buckle. 3. Referring to Figure 6, don the headset. Center and space the front and rear crown straps. Adjust the headband strap for a snug fit. 4. Adjust the microphone to the proper operating position. Figure 5. 7 Switching to Single Earcup Mode 1. Release the right rear and right front buckles on the headband, and remove the right earcup (Figure 7). Fasten the right rear and right front headband buckles. 2. Release the communications cord by depressing the red dot button (Figure 8). 3. Don the headset (Figure 9) with the microphone on the left side. Ensure that the earcups are centered over the ears and that the earphones are contained within the earcups. 4. Tighten or loosen the left front adjustment slide and the right rear adjustment slide until a stable fit is achieved. 5. Adjust the microphone to the proper operating position. REAR EARCUP Figure 7. 8 OPERATION NOTE The GDH is available with various communications configurations. For example, a variety of upper and lower cords may be used. Figure 10 shows a configuration with the push-to-talk (PTT) switch on the lower cord. Figure 11 shows the PTT switch on the upper cord. Connecting Cords 1. Referring to Figure 10, connect the upper cord to the lower cord. 2. Connect the lower cord to the appropriate radio/ intercom unit. 9 MAINTENANCE Maintenance consists of cleaning the headset and changing the earphone pile covers when they become soiled. Cleaning Wipe the headset with a slightly dampened cloth. Changing Earphone Pile Covers 1. Referring to Figure 12, pull the pile cover out from under the earseal on one side of the headset. 2. Insert the replacement pile into the earcup, ensuring that it is completely tucked under the earseal and smoothed out. EARSEAL EARPHONE PILE COVER 3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 on the other side of the headset. Figure 12. Earphone Pile Cover and Earseal Changing Earseals 1. Referring to Figure 12, remove the earseal from the earcup on one side of the headset. 2. Hook one end of the earseal over the end of the earcup. Carefully stretch the remainder of the earseal over the edge of the earcup until it is completely installed. Ensure that the pile cover is completely tucked in and smoothed out under the earseal. 3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 on the other side of the headset. 7

10 Changing Front Strap 1. Referring to Figure 13, unfasten the left front and right front buckles. Remove the front strap from the crown strap (if used). 2. Insert the replacement front strap through the front crown strap loops (if used), ensuring that the buckles are mated correctly. Fasten the front strap to the left and right front buckles. Referring to Figure 13, unfasten the right rear buckle. Remove the rear strap from the crown strap (if used). 2. Remove the other end of the rear strap as follows: a. Remove the pile cover from inside the left earcup. b. From inside the left earcup, push the end of the strap through the earcup slot. 3. From outside the earcup, push the end of the replacement rear strap through the slot. 4. Reinsert the pile cover into the earcup, ensuring that it is completely tucked under the earseal and smoothed out. 5. Insert the replacement strap through the rear crown strap loops (if used). Fasten the strap to the right rear buckle. Changing Earcup Straps 1. On the earcup where the strap is to be changed, remove the pile cover. 2. From inside the earcup, push the end of the strap through the earcup slot. 3. From outside the earcup, push the end of the strap through the slot. 4. Reinsert the pile cover into the earcup, ensuring that it is completely tucked under the earseal and smoothed out. 8
