It is a world class fashion institute doing yeoman services to the country for the past 25 years. Started as a single campus in 1986, today NIFT has 15 campuses across the country. Considering the services NIFT rendered and its relavance and significance to the country in general and the fashion industry in particular the Parliament enacted an Act- National Institute of Fashion Technology Act, 2006 granting the institute more autonomy in academic and research areas. It has become a statutory institute. Des) Fashion Design Bachelor of Design (B.Des) - Fashion Communication Bachelor of Design (B.Des) - Textile Design The Fashion Design course prepares the students to meet the highest requirements of fashion industry and articulate their own vision through the design collection they make. Emphasising conceptual rigor coupled with high technical skill, the course guides through each stage of the design process namely from concept to beautifully design garments. On gaining exposure in the industry by internship in the 3rd year, the students of the Fashion Design engage in Design Collection which would be the culmination of their 4 year rigorous Design Education. B.Des. Fashion Communication is a unique under graduate course which aims to equip the students the necessary skill and knowledge to get a wide range of career options. The course enables the students to develop communication skills through modules in journalistic writing, event management, PR, photography, styling and trend forecasting. With the academic inputs the students develop and hone up their analytical skills, create visionary concepts and refine their understanding of channel promotion and communication for fashion and lifestyle brands. The textile design course offers a unique opportunity and experience in exploring and developing special skills in weaving, knitting, printing, dying, embroidery etc.. The course also makes the students to learn hand-crafted and digital techniques using softwares like Nedgraphics. The Textile Design program provides ample opportunity to the students to participate in live industry projects to get first hand experience. The focus would be to add value to the fabric in terms of design. The students during the course of study undergo internship and graduation project in the industry in the real time situations and master textile designing. 08

9 Post Graduate Courses ( 2 Year Duration ) Master of Design (M.Des) - Fashion Retail Management Master of Design (M.Des) - Fashion Marketing & Merchandising Master of Design (M.Des) - Fashion Retail Management Post Graduate Programme in Fashion Retail Management aims at giving a deep insight into the principles of fashion marketing, retail buying & merchandising including basic knowledge in fashion apparels. The programme enables the student to understand the concept of visual merchandising and lays emphasis on Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Supply Chain Management, Brand Management, Sales Management. etc. The fashion retail management program covers the whole gamut of retail business. The programme prepares the students to make sound business decisions and provide leadership. Career Options M.Des fashion retail Management students inculcate in professional skills and retail expertise, they qualify for careers in fashion industries. Retail is a highly dynamic and fast-moving industry in general and fashion retailing in particular and the graduates who are passionate about fashion with strong business acumen, specialist management expertise and a creative approach to retail are in high demand. Master of Design (M.Des) - Fashion Marketing & Merchandising The Post Graduate Programme in Fashion Marketing & Merchandising (M.Des) aims to develop managerial skills in fashion marketing and merchandising best suited to the requirements of the export and fashion retail sectors. Students are exposed to creative merchandising/marketing, innovative fashion management practices, fashion forecasting and trends and business practices through field visits and industry internships. The programme inculcates in the students the right attitude to be part of the middle management of any growing organisation. This M.Des. course focuses into creative trend-setting strategies and shrewd business practices. This highly competitive sector requires specialized skills and knowledge related to fashion products, consumer behaviour, fashion markets and global industry trends. Fundamental to this knowledge is a cross-cultural understanding of the retailer s role in channelling products from designers to producers and on to customers in today s globalized fashion markets. The students are taken to flagship fashion stores, local fashion designer houses, retail outlets etc, to have personal experience, analyze and evaluate the role and function of day-today industry professionals working and succeeding in the business. In short, this course provides the specialised knowledge in fashion merchandising and marketing. 09

10 ADMISSION Guidelines UNDER GRADUATE PROGRAMME B.Des - Fashion Design B.Des - Fashion Communication B.Des - Textile Design WHO CAN APPLY? Candidates for admission to the First Semester of Eight Semester B.Des., shall be required to have passed the : Higher Secondary Examination of (10+2) pattern of examination (or) have passed in 3 year Diploma (10+3) recognized by the Central / State Government Examination (or) any other Examination of any University / Authority accepted by the Syndicate of the affiliating University as equivalent thereto. NOTE The students studying in 12th Standard in the current academic year can also apply. In case of their selection, they shall produce the original certificates in proof of having been passed the prescribed qualification at the time of admission. ENTRANCE TEST Admission to UG Programmes of will be made through all India Entrance Test in 3 cycles. The first cycle will be conducted in Feb and the 2nd & 3rd cycle test will be conducted April/May The dates will be notified in the website. The candidates can appear for online general ability test (Computer Based Test) on the prescribed dates according to their convenience on their own. HOW TO APPEAR FOR ONLINE ENTRANCE TEST : The candidates who have registered for B.Des. shall login using your mobile no and date of birth to appear online entrance test. The Entrance Test comprises 2 tests viz., i) General Ability Test (GAT) Marks - Computer based objective type Test. ii) Creative Ability Test (CAT) Marks - Paper based Test. The Short listed candidates from the online test will be called for creative ability test ( paper based test ) and personal interview to be conducted in chennai in the month of April/May SYLLABUS : GENERAL ABILITY TEST (GAT) : It is designed to test the general ability of the candidates. The questions will be at Higher secondary level covering the following areas. There will be no negative marks. QUANTITATIVE : Addition, Multiplication, Division, Fraction and Percentage. COMMUNICATION : - Synonyms, Antonyms, Singular, Plural, Idioms and Phrases. English Comprehension (To comprehend a situation from a given passage and testing the basic English language) GENERAL KNOWLEDGE AND CURRENT AFFAIRS : - To test the candidate s General Knowledge and Current Affairs. CREATIVE ABILITY TEST (CAT) : This test is to assess the overall creative ability of the candidates. The intuition skill, the observation skill, creative and innovative use of color, illustration skill, innovative conceptualization and design skill are judged PERSONAL INTERVIEW The short listed candidate will be invited for personal interview. The Personal interview will cover broadly the general attitude, the communication ability, personal etiquette, aptitude and orientation of the candidates towards the subject. 10
