3 Royal Doulton Insight The Great British Bulldog The Evolution of the Bulldog from WWI to James Bond 007 by Christopher Evans Royal Doulton s bulldog models have been on active service since 1917 and are collectively the most coveted canine model produced by Royal Doulton. When one considers the diversity of bulldog pieces to collect, we quickly understand their popularity. The bulldog was originally kept for bull baiting here in England, but this was abolished in Since that time, the bulldog has been bred into a much tamer breed. The bulldog s association with all things British (and of course lately the world of James Bond) stems from the two World Wars of the twentieth century. In 1917, Royal Doulton produced a large khaki bulldog, seated with either a tin hat or a tam o shanter (cap) representing the uniforms of English and Scottish soldiers during the First World War. In 1941, Royal Doulton went on to produce a series of seated bulldogs with Union Jack flags draped on their backs, representing and helping to promote national pride during this difficult period in history. Two other bulldog models were produced at this time representing Winston Churchill, the famous British wartime leader and national hero, wearing different headgear and smoking his familiar cigar. Versions of bulldogs draped in Union Jack flags were actually produced earlier as advertising flasks for alcohol retailers. There are other very rare variations of Royal Doulton bulldogs to be found including one with an eye patch and another with a khaki glaze with the familiar Union Jack on its back. Some of the rarest bulldogs to find include bulldog flasks, a very unusual wall pocket and bulldogs mounted on pottery boxes. It is thus not surprising to see that this famous Doulton hero has been adopted as the spirit of British survival and given a starring role in the latest James Bond film, Skyfall, where he survives an assassination attempt on M in London, England. 4 Royal Doulton Prestige Figures Royal Doulton Advertising Lion Harrods Department Store Attributed to Jo Ledger 19 H $15,000 Simply known as the Royal Doulton Advertising Lion, this impressive figure is not considered a Prestige piece, but belongs to the group of prestigious figures produced at the Burslem factory. This icon was produced circa 1950 for advertising purposes but was never available for sale. It is reputed that as few as five of these pieces were ever produced and the ownership remained with Royal Doulton, although they were loaned to Royal Doulton showrooms around the world. One of these famous advertising lions was permanently loaned to the famous London luxury department store, Harrods. Harrods association with Royal Doulton went all the way back to the very beginnings, as the building itself is covered in a Doulton terracotta façade and the famous Harrods food halls are decorated in exquisite Doulton tiles. The designer of this magnificent advertising lion is unknown, although its refined modeling suggests that Jo Ledger, then Art Director, played a role in its conception. Henry V at Agincourt HN3947 Modeled by Alan Maslankowski 20 H $16,000 In 1997, Alan Maslankowski was selected to create a new model for the Prestige line, Henry V at Agincourt. Alan was inspired by William Shakespeare s play Henry V for the creation of this figure and Henry s rousing St. Crispin Day speech appears around the base. With the horse rearing on his hind legs, the model captures the moment when Henry V addressed his troops before battle. Alan spent hours researching medieval costumes and armor in order to ensure the details of the figure were correct and he also referred to an anonymous portrait of Henry V. Before starting work on the full scale model, Alan worked on three smaller clay studies. It took Alan more than three months of concentrated work to complete the finished model. The detail and accuracy of this prestigious figure makes it one of the most sought-after works of this late, great modeler. Romeo and Juliet HN4057 Modeled by Douglas V. Tootle 12 H Ltd. 300 $3,000 Written early in the career of William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet tells the tragic tale of two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It is among Shakespeare s most popular plays during his lifetime and along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers and have been adapted numerous times for the stage, film and opera. In 1999, as the new millennium was approaching, Royal Doulton modeler Douglas Tootle was given the task of reinterpreting the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet for the Prestige range. This gorgeous piece features a scene from the Royal Ballet s production of the legendary tale. Romeo is kneeling on a draped base sprinkled with roses as he lifts the lovely Juliet into a graceful pose. Romeo and Juliet is written beautifully on the side of the base in an elegant gold script. Matador and Bull HN2324 Modeled by Peggy Davies 16 H $24,000 Royal Doulton designer and modeler, Peggy Davies, will always be known for her array of dancing pretty ladies. She will also be remembered for her many limited edition pieces and perhaps most importantly, her contributions to the Prestige range of figures. The Matador and Bull is a particular tour de force. Peggy s legendary attention to detail brings the piece to life and makes it easy to picture this dramatic scene in the famous Plaza de Toros. While researching the project in the early 1960 s, Peggy not only sketched her ideas, but also spent time in a local abattoir as well as agricultural establishments to ensure that her model would be the best that she could produce. Her meticulous eye for detail can be seen in the modeling of the bull, including the ligaments and musculature. This prestigious model stands an impressive 16 high and depicts a matador, the senior torero (bull fighter) in full, traditional dress engaging in his art. 5 Royal Doulton Prestige Figures Hercules HN4561 Modeled by Alan Maslankowski H Ltd. 50 $20,000 In Greek mythology, Hercules, the son of Zeus, is given the gift of superhuman strength. In a fit of madness inflicted by Juno, Hercules kills his wife and children. As a penance, Hercules is ordered by Apollo to serve King Eurystheus for 12 years. King Eurystheus in turn orders Hercules to carry out 12 tasks, each of immense difficulty and danger. The first task was to kill the Nemean Lion - a beast of great ferocity that terrified the people who lived in the ancient city of Nemea. Hercules could not injure the lion with his club so he caught it with his bare arms and squeezed it to death. Afterwards, Hercules wore the lion s skin as his mantle. In 2003, the ever-talented Alan Maslankowski was once again called upon to capture the strength of Hercules and rage of the lion in this Prestige figure, Hercules HN4561. At the time, Alan talked about the creative process: In creating this piece I tried to convey the fierce action of the battle and manicure of the lion. I researched by reading the legend of the labours of Hercules and by studying the anatomy of both lions and men. Pony Express HN4842 Modeled by Alan Maslankowski 15 H Ltd. 50 $17,000 It has been over 150 years since the first Pony Express rider was handed a mail pouch containing 49 letters, five telegrams and miscellaneous papers on April 3, 1860 in St. Joseph, Missouri. The Pony Express was formed by three Missouri businessmen in an effort to speed mail delivery from the East to the fledgling state of California, where the population had swelled after the discovery of gold, creating an appetite for timely news back home. At the time, it could take several months for a letter to travel from Washington, D.C. to Sacramento, California by stage coach or boat. The Pony Express cut the amount of time it took to cross the western half of the continent to 10 days. Riders faced tough conditions blazing hot deserts and frigid blizzards, thieves and outlaws, rattlesnakes and warring natives. At the height of its fame, the Pony Express used 420 horses, 125 riders and 400 station men. Despite its short tenure just 18 months in operation the Pony Express history continues to capture the imagination. This beautiful fine bone china figure was modeled by the late Alan Maslankowski with decorative designs by David Capewell. It has been handmade and decorated by the skilled craftsmen and women of the Royal Doulton Studio in England and limited to only 50 pieces. Charge of the Light Brigade HN3718 Modeled by Alan Maslankowski 17 H $16,000 The Charge of the Light Brigade against the Russian artillery on October 25, 1854 was an infamous occasion, graphically described in the poem The Charge of the Light Brigade, by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In 1994, one of Royal Doulton s greatest modelers, the late Alan Maslankowski, created his commemorative masterpiece to mark the heroism of the regiments of the Light Brigade on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the battle. At the time, Alan s model was one of the most aggressive that the Royal Doulton Studios had attempted in many years. The modeling time for this historic sculpture took four months. A charging pose, lance at the ready, was selected for the figure and then began the intricate work of recreating the Light Brigade s Trooper. The most difficult aspects of the model were the faces - both man and horse - and Alan was successful at creating the bravery of both as they began the charge. Van Dyck portrait of King Charles I. King Charles I ( ) HN3459 Modeled by Charles Noke and Harry Tittensor 1 Ltd. 350 $3,000 King Charles I ( ), the second son of James I of England and Scotland and Ann of Denmark, was born a Scottish prince. He was a high-minded, civilized gentleman as a king. He was also dogmatic and inflexible with Parliament and attempted to take over its power and govern by personal rule. This dramatic reinterpretation by Charles Noke and Harry Tittensor was created in 1992 to mark the 350th anniversary of the English Civil War. First introduced in 1920 as HN404, this imposing figure was partly inspired by a Van Dyck portrait of the monarch. Jester HN H $80 Polka HN H $80 The Polka HN2156, launched in 1955, has been selected as a tribute to designer and modeler, Peggy Davies. This iconic figure reflects her personal love of all forms of dance and recognizes her ability to interpret graceful movements through her work. Princess Badoura is one of the most enchanting tales of the Arabian Nights. The story where she meets her Prince and their adventures inspired illustrator Edmund Dulac and it was his imaginative drawing of the Princess on an elephant ceremonially progressing to her wedding that provided the basis for this amazing sculpture. In 1986, sculptor Peter Gee, modeled Isadora; creating a graceful sculpture that reflected the freedom and vitality of the 1920 s, especially the natural movements of one of the decade s most expressive dancers, Isadora Duncan. Columbine HN H $80 Launched in 1982, the Prestige figurine Columbine, a crafty serving girl, was one of the characters in the comic cast of Italian Commedia Dell-Arte. This commemorative miniature recreates the flamboyant rococo style of the original study. Charles Vyse s sculpture, Darling HN1, is the iconic HN figure that launched the range in This enchanting study of a young child dressed for bed was christened by Queen Mary during her visit to the Royal Doulton factory in April of Given Noke s enthusiasm for Jesters, inspired by theatre and historical precedent, it s the perfect icon of the early period. All of the details that Charles Noke included in his original piece, have been meticulously remodeled in this miniature figure. Sunshine Girl HN H $80 The Sunshine Girl by Leslie Harradine is typical of the figures evoking the spirit of young women of the 1920 s. Women showed their new found confidence by wearing brightly colored bathing costumes. Knight of the Crusades by Shane Ridge was released in This subject also continues the Royal Doulton tradition of prestigious sculptures depicting historical figures. This miniature recreates all the fine details of the original study including armor, helmet, cape, shield, sword, leather belt and the red cross on the front of the tunic. 7 Royal Doulton Insight Royal Doulton Centennial Jubilee Royal Doulton Figures: 100 Years of Costumes and Couture Just as fashions have come and gone over the last century, so too have the styles of figurines produced by Royal Doulton. With the centenary of Royal Doulton s HN figure range upon us this year, what better occasion than now to consider the diverse variety of figures produced. Royal Doulton themselves once proclaimed the collection as a pageant of surpassing beauty and who today could disagree? Christopher Evans Royal Doulton Historian Rarely has a range of figures mirrored so accurately the times in which they were produced. Clothes are symbolic not just for their beauty but also their social status and often the origins of the wearer too. From the very introduction of the HN range in 1913, we can clearly see this with figures such as the statuesque and severe looking Elizabeth Fry HN2, the famous prison reformer to the diminutive A Crinoline HN9. It was not until the start of Royal Doulton s long association with Leslie Harradine, one of their greatest artists ever, that the range of figures really took off. Harradine is credited with the success of the HN range in the first half of the Twentieth Century. He was a great lover of women, having married three times (on two occasions marrying his models) and this appreciation comes through in all of his figures. A handful of his 1920 s nudes are said to very closely resemble one of his models! As you will discover it was not just contemporary fashions that have influenced the range but also what we may call fashionable pastimes and interests! An early Royal Doulton advertisement in The Pottery Gazette and Glass Trade Review published June 2, 1930, featuring Royal Doulton s The Victorian Lady. By Christopher Evans A variety of Victorian ladies Of course when anyone mentions the term Royal Doulton figure, the typical Victorian lady is what they mean. Whilst Victorian ladies can hardly be said to be contemporary to the HN range, their inclusion and popularity can perhaps be explained by nostalgia for a quieter, gentler time, in the not too distant past. A quick glimpse, however, is enough to realize that Doulton s artists used extensive license to interpret Victorian fashions into the HN figure range. Perhaps one of the most famous, and certainly one of the most popular Doulton ladies, is A Victorian Lady HN726 first introduced in A version of the figure remained in production until There were 15 official colorways of this popular lady and several others have come to light over the years. Doulton s Victorian Lady is seen with a very off the shoulder dress and shawl, wearing a typical English bonnet surmounted with a great feather. Quite what Victorian society would have said about a young woman showing so much flesh, we can perfectly imagine. Perhaps the pose and facial expression of another fashionable Victorian lady, Quality Street HN1211, best describes this reaction! Yet, A Victorian Lady HN726 is not alone in the HN range another perennial favorite today is the equally saucy Lady Fayre HN1265! A Victorian Lady HN H $1,600 The inspiration for the figure Sweet and Twenty came from the original picture titled When Hearts are Young by Molly Benatar. Pre-Raphaelite Artists influence the Range To limit Royal Doulton figures simply as bonneted, Victorian beauties is remiss. When the HN range was introduced in 1913, there was a pre-raphaelite renaissance in the art world led by such painters as John and Mary Young Hunter. Several figures from this early time reflect this renewed interest. Among them Lady Anne HN83 modeled after a painting by Mary Young Hunter called The Duke s High Dame. Other such ladies include the eponymously named Pretty Lady HN69 first introduced in 1916, again based on a painting this time by the great 20th Century illustrator Arthur Rackham. This picture is in fact Wendy, from a version of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens illustrated by Rackham. Another contemporary influence on the range was Leon Bakst, the famous costume and set designer for the Ballets Russes. Certainly his designs directly inspired the now famous prototype of Marquise Sylvestra, displayed once in the Royal Doulton Museum in Burslem, England. I am sure you will be surprised to see how many other figures he influenced. Bakst s costumes played upon contrasting textiles and the choice of decoration for a handful of figures including The Necklace HN394, The Princess HN392, Lady with Shawl HN447 and Tulips HN747 - all reflect his influence on the figure range. Lady Anne HN H $8,000 The Perfect Sweet and Twenty More demure Victorian ladies are plentiful within the range, and proved equally popular such as Pantalettes, Priscilla, Millicent, Rosina and the appropriately named Miss Demure first seen in What all of Doulton s Victorian ladies do have in common, is their beauty and youth. Their popularity even today can be explained by their romantic reverie of a bygone, halcyon time, when life was apparently simpler. One of my favorite pieces is Sweet and Twenty HN1360 (introduced in 1928) who is modeled coyly sitting on her sofa with her bonnet next to her. She is the perfect embodiment of perennial youth and beauty the perfect sweet and twenty! Sweet and Twenty HN H $1,200 The embodiment of the Pre- Raphaelite Movement, Mary Young Hunter s painting was ideal inspiration for Doulton s craftsmen. 12 Call Toll-Free Shop Online 13

8 Royal Doulton Insight This glamour shot from the 1920 s was the inspiration for the Lido Lady figurine. An original Longeli picture inspired the figure Camille. Lido Lady HN1220 $2,700 Camille HN H $1,600 Dressed up to the nines During the art deco period, fancy dress was a popular pastime and there are a colorful array of Doulton figures in fancy dress that continually fetch higher and higher prices! These figures were produced in many colorways and all of them are highly sought after by collectors around the world. The diversity in costume from butterflies to the devil, to jesters and clowns all are a triumph such as Folly HN1335 in the simplicity of their modeling yet eye-catching decoration. Art deco lovelies In the 1920 s Royal Doulton was really leading the way in worldwide figure production. Harradine s models of 1920 s girls remain as popular today as they were in their heyday. Harradine s scantily clad beauties including Negligée HN1219 and Lido Lady HN1220 are so true to life. They are in actual fact based on contemporary advertisements for ladies lingerie. The sea-side and pool life were so popular at this time that it is no surprise to see this reflected in the HN range with figures including The Swimmer HN1270 and Sunshine Girl HN1344, both portrayed in bathing costumes, posing for their audiences! Popular fashions also can be seen in figures of this period, two personal favorites of mine are Scotties HN1281 and the diminutive Pinkie HN1552. The pose and dress of Scotties and Pinkie s cloche hat are so perfectly 1920 s. Naturally, Miss 1926 HN1205 with her stylish Eton crop and her fabulous ermine trimmed coat can belong to no other era! The same can be said of Hunts Lady HN1201 modeled in her contemporary hunting wear striking a stylish pose. Folly HN H $3,500 18th Century Fashions: Fancy Dress and Powdered wigs With the popularity of fancy dress it is not surprising to find so many powdered wigged ladies in the HN range, all loosely based on 18th Century dress. Figures such as Camille HN1586, Fleurette HN1587, Eugene HN1520, Lisette 1523 and Sibell HN1668 certainly mirror 18th Century fashions, but there is, as always, a certain amount of artistic license displayed by Royal Doulton s figure painters. When one compares the two versions of Camille; she perfectly suits her white powdered wig of HN1711 equally as much as the natural hair colored version HN1710. The popularity of this group of ladies harks back to earlier times in English figure production by the great Chelsea factory. Masquerade Female HN600 $1,400 The glamour of 1930 s Hollywood As the 1920 s faded into the 1930 s the popularity of Hollywood can be seen in many figures introduced during this decade. The haughty Clothilde HN1598 is picture perfect and Nadine HN1886 is pure glamour in her sleek gown and jacket, topped with a large sun hat. Another such slender figure is the hard to find The Mirror HN1852, who again is unattributable to any particular Hollywood star of the 1930 s, but rather is the embodiment of all the glamorous female stars of the time. The dramatic Rhythm HN1903 is another such figure in her floating dress, delicately dancing, holding her bias cut dress. She is such a delicate figure, and whilst popular, she must have had a short production run due to the precarious delicacy of her modeling. English actor W.S. Pinley dressed for his role as Charley s aunt. Masquerade Male HN599 $1,400 Charley s Aunt HN35 7 H $1,000 Perfect Pairs Royal Doulton themselves copied this style of figures very closely in the 1920 s with figure pairings such as the two Masqueraders HN599 and HN600 or The Belle HN754 and her partner The Dandy HN753. All four figures are modeled not only in 18th Century fashion but also style with their brocage supporting the actual figure just like the Chelsea originals. We must not forget the appropriately named Chelsea Pair HN579 and HN577 too, who also reflect this renewed interest in 18th Century Chelsea china figures, both of which are a mixture of the traditional and modern a true Royal Doulton interpretation of the past. Nadine HN H $1,800 The fashions worn by women in Hollywood had a major impact on Royal Doulton s figure making. The world of theatre and musicals The world of theatre has always played an inspirational role for Royal Doulton s range of figures - from the choice of subject matter, to the choice of dress. Figures such as Doris Keane as Cavallini HN90 and HN96, are carefully based on the costumes of the popular American actress Doris Keane s play, Romance. The play was first performed in 1913, the same year as the launch of the HN range. There have been many traditionally dressed maidens throughout the century of the HN collection, the majority of which are the inspiration of the great Leslie Harradine. There was certainly a mystic surrounding many cultures. Spain and the Spanish speaking world are well represented in the HN collection with Spanish Lady HN1262 and the later Modena HN1845, both wearing their traditional mantillas. Other countries are represented too - with Scotch Girl HN1269 we get a glimpse of a traditional Scottish kilted girl. With Midinette HN1289 we see a typical Parisian milliner s assistant on her travels delivering hats to customers. Equally popular in the 1920 s was the Orient and there are were figures such as Geisha HN354 and another version, Geisha HN1223, both modeled with traditional kimonos. Another oriental figure is the Japanese Fan HN399, which can be found in array of colorways and also mounted on a lidded bowl. The 1920 s and 30 s also saw a great vogue for all things Dutch, and with musical numbers including Tiptoe Through the Tulips being popular, it is no surprise to see figures including Gretchen HN1397, Derrick HN1398 and the humorously titled Willy-Won t-he HN1561 making an appearance in the early 1930 s, all in typical Dutch dress. Stage Shows and Reviews Other theatrical themed figures not only mirror the costumes of the actor or actress but also resemble them facially too, such as the figures of Ellen Terry as Queen Catherine and Henry Irving as Cardinal Wolsey. Both of these figures were originally produced as part of Doulton s vellum range of figures, but they re-appeared in the HN collection as HN344 and HN379 respectively. Pierrette HN644 appeared in many stage shows and reviews in the deco period, so it is no surprise to see her portrayed here in the HN range.
