No. 06 NF 20) A patent application relating to the invention on A Novel water dispersible Oligosaccharide Graft - Acrylic copolymer and a Process for the preparation thereof has been filed on 2 th January 202 (IPU Ref. No. 092 NF 20). A patent application relating to the invention on A New rechargeable electricity storage battery has been filed on 2 th January 202 (IPU Ref. No.0207 NF 20) Pre-LERIG 202 Events CSIR-CLRI has organized Dr. A L Mudaliar Oratorical Contest, an annual event in honour of Dr. AL Mudaliar, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Madras who was instrumental in bringing this institute to Chennai, for Students from Schools and Colleges on 24 th January and winners were honoured in the LERIG inaugural function. CSIR-CLRI has organized a Press Meet on 27 th January in connection with LERIG 202. Addressing the Press Meet, Prof.Dr.A B Mandal, Director, CLRI said that CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute has developed a salt free zero emission chrome tanning technology and zero waste water discharge technologies. He further added that the zero emission chrome tanning technology has been transferred to companies in India and abroad and the Zero waste water discharge technology will be transferred shortly to Industries. Every year, B M Das memorial lecture and Nayudamma Memorial Lecture are being held during LERIG to honour the first Director of CLRI, Prof. Biraj Mohan Das and to commemorate the ideals and values espoused by Dr.Y.Nayudamma, respectively. After the Press Meet, Prof B M das Memorial Lectures, was held at Triple Helix Auditorium of this Institute, delivered by Prof Dr.Dietrich Kebschull, Chairman of the Indo-German Export promotion (IGEP) Foundation focusing on the challenges, the Indian Leather Industry facing currently as regards to current scenario around the world due to the economic down fall and hoping that Indian leather sector will emerge as a leading player during the 2 th plan period. Prof Y Nayudamma memorial lecture was delivered by Dr. Baldev Raj, President, Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) on Ethics, Energy, and Equity. During the lecture, he said that the current situation demands coherent synergy between ethical organizations to deliver equity to all citizens on this planet. There is a need that energy, water, health, and land are considered in a comprehensive and interlinked fashion for sustainable options to provide better equality of life to all the citizens of the Planet. LERIG 202 CSIR-CLRI has organized Leather Industry Get-Together (LERIG) 202, an annual event with the sponsorship of various Leather and Leather products Trade bodies and Associations and in co-operation with Indian Leather Industry and in association with Council of Leather Exports, with focus on Development of Leather industry in 2 th Five year Plan and inaugurated by His Excellency, The Tamilnadu Governor Shri K Rosaiah on 28 th January at Triple Helix Auditorium of this Institute by lighting Kuthuvilaku. In his inaugural address Governor K. Rosaiah said that the Indian leather industry had scaled new heights with export target set at $4 billion by the end of the 2th Plan period. Prof Dr A B Mandal, Director, CSIR-CLRI in his welcome speech, profusely thanked His Excellency Tamilnadu Governor Shri K.Rosiah for having accepted the invitation to inaugurate the LERIG-202 and welcomed him with floral bouquet, shawl and angavastram. He also welcomed the distinguished eminent personalities from Leather industries, trade bodies, agencies and delegates participating in the event. Delivering the presidential address at the inauguration, the Twelfth Five Year Plan will focus more on scientific and industrial research, said Dr K.V. Raghavan, Chairman, Research Council, Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) and further said that zero solid discharge, which would avoid environmentally unfriendly land filling; establishing bioscience and biotechnology research; integrated fashion styling design of leather products; a new world-class environmental quality assessment facility with the support of the Centre and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research were some of the new research initiatives proposed in the Plan.

2 LERIG 202, New Facilities added, IILF 202 New Facilities Added Design Innovation Centre, has been launched in CLRI campus on 27 th January 202 which has a State of the - art automated shoe design facility, which would cut and optimize the use of material, based on laser technology and a threedimension shoe design and development facility The Indian leather sector had exhibited remarkable resilience in the past. The leather sector in Tamil Nadu had taken pioneering efforts. One among them was the adoption of zero liquid discharge, under which six common effluent treatment plants in the State were using the sophisticated reverse osmosis technology for water recycling. This would reduce more than 80 per cent of water consumption for every kilogram of leather made. This is the first of its kind project in the country Governor K. Rosaiah released A Compendium of LERIG 202 and the first copy was received by Shri M Mohamed Hashim, Chairman, KH Group. He also gave away shields / Mementos to Winners of Modeurop awards 202, CLE s Design award 202. Education Awards 202 and AL Mudaliar Oratorical awards were also presented to the Winners by Various Eminent personalities of CLE, Indian Leather Industry, FDDI, NIFT and Program Director, ECBP, Ethiopia and Former Director Dr.G.Thyagarajan, CLRI. This was followed by Session I on Leather Technology & Environment During this session, eminent speakers from Leather Industry, CEMCOT,TNPCB and the Scientists from CSIR-CLRI dwelt upon higher priority on effective Environment management and new developments in the field of leather Technology Session II on Practical Demonstration This session had highest number of Demonstrations actively participated by Leather and Leather Product Industries and really a feast for Technical and Innovative audience. Session III on Leather Creativity & Design Innovation During the session, Innovation challenges in upgrading leather to meet high-end usage and techniques thereof have been discussed. Besides, NIFT, CLE, Leather Footwear Panel Convener and young designers from the Industry spoke on unique-designs and creativity. Session IV on HRD for change and Innovation This session presented a road map on the changing demands of human capabilities in Leather & product sectors. Industry members also shared their needs and experiences, and concluded in the afternoon of 29 th January 202 with a consolidated overview, presented by industry and research, which would help towards better preparedness to decide the path of framing a document on 2 th plan for the Indian Leather sector. Finally the programme ended with release of Balloons and Welcome to the Inaugural Ceremony of 27 th India International Leather Fair (IILF) 202 on 3 st January 202 in the ITPO trade Centre, Nandambakkam IILF 202 CSIR-CLRI, actively participated in the India International Leather Fair (IILF) 202, organized by ITPO, Chennai which was inaugurated by Honorable Union Minister of State for Finance and in coordination with CLE, ITPO, conceptualized and presented a theme pavilion Versatility with the support of Indian Leather Industry, highlighting Indian expertise in design and development of high quality leather wears, showcase the Spring Summer 203 collections representing three groups namely Luminous Bright, Powered Pastels and Vivid Naturals 2

3 Awards, National Science Day, ILGF 202 & RCED (Kolkata) NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY National Science Day was celebrated in a befitting manner in the CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute on 28 th February. Prof.Ajit Kumar Kolar of IIT Madras delivered the National Science Day Lecture on Sustainable Energy Systems. He reiterated that all energy sources must be made sustainable by developing enabling technologies. Prof. Kolar emphasized on the need for a greater role of Indian scientists, especially the younger generation researchers, in providing enabling technological solutions to deal with the emerging challenges in the realm of energy. Prof.Dr.A.B.Mandal, Director, CSIR-CLRI in his presidential remarks, highlighted on the extraordinary contribution made by Sir C V Raman for the benefit of science, society and younger researchers. A documentary on Sir C V Raman was screened on the occasion. Delegates from Northampon University visited CLRI on Awards Ms.R.Deepachitra, JRF doing research under the guidance of Dr.T.P.Sastry of this Institute has presented a Research Paper titled Preparation and Characterization of biocomposites containing silver micro rods, collagen and antibiotics in National Conference on Popularization of Chemical Sciences, organized by Department of Chemistry & Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Guru Nanak College, Velachery, Chennai in Collaboration with Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company Limited, Vadodara, Gujarat, during 6 th to 8 th January and won First Prize. The MAHE award constituted by the Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs, India for the best paper presentation by a scientist / research faculty was presented to Dr.R.Narayani, Dr.A.Rajaram and Dr.Rama Rajaram of this Institute for their oral paper titled Development of a biological scaffold for tissue engineering of vascular structures presented at the International Conference on Biomaterials Implant Devices and Tissue Engineering BIDTE-202, held on 6-8 January 202 at Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Chennai, organized by the Society for Biomaterials and Artificial organs, (India) (SBAOI) and Society for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine(India). Shri K Dayalan of this Institute has been chosen as Winner of CLE s Design Award 202 in the Award Category Best Shoe Design (Institutional designer) Dr C Muralidharan, Sr. Principal Scientist and Dr. A. Gnanamani, Sr. Scientist have been selected for Tamil Nadu Scientist Award (TANSA) 20 in Engineering and Technology and Biological Sciences, respectively. National Award for Innovative Researcher of the year 202 has been presented to Dr.V.Kasi Rao for his Research Paper on a National Education Conference on Innovations in Teaching, Research and Extension in higher Education: Issues and strategies, 7, March 202, jointly organized by Dept. of Continuing Education, Barkattullah University, Bhopal and Indian Society for Education and Environment (ISEE), Chennai (Tamilnadu). A certificate of appreciation has been issued to Dr.V.Kasi Rao for his presentation of Lesa Database: A Tool for knowledge Indicators in Leather Science and Technology Innovations towards sustainable development of Leather Industry at International Conference on Arts, Social Sciences and Technology (CAST 202) held in Penang, Malaysia during 3-4 March 202. ILGF 202 CSIR-CLRI participated in 7 th International Leather Goods Fair held from 8 th to 20 th February 202 at Milan Mela Complex in eastern Kolkata under the management of ITPO (Indian Trade Promotion Organization). CSIR-CLRI had a stall in the Fair and displayed many leather articles and bromides focusing on design development in leather goods, development of combination products in collaboration with CSIR-NEIST, different activities related to HRD and technologies developed by this Institute. Nine staff members of RCED(CLRI)-Kolkata manned the CSIR- CLRI stall on rotation and interacted with quite a good numbers of visitors RCED (Kolkata) Regional Centre for Extension and Development (RCED)-CSIR-CLRI, Kolkata has organized a laboratory scale demonstration of Pickleless Chrome Tanning process developed by the Institute, at Toptans, a Kolkata tannery located in Calcutta Leather Complex. Expert from CLRI-RCED, Kolkata visited a training centre at Likhi Village, Arunachal Pradesh to evaluate the centre and also the training programme conducted by the Centre and submitted the evaluation report under National Monitoring Unit (NMU) programme conducted by CSIR 3

Leather Industries Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (LIDCAP), Hyderabad. Workshop for SME s A workshop on Readiness for International Standards in Leather and Footwear SMEs was organized in Ambur on 4 th March 202 by UNIDO Consolidated Project, Jointly with Indian Shoe Federation, Indian Finished Leather Manufacturers and Exporters Association and CSIR- CLRI There were 52 participants in the programme. During the workshop, Dr.B N Das of this Institute explained the Good Manufacturing practices for Footwear SMEs available through CSIR-CLRI while elaborating on exchange of best practices between Italian and Indian companies with the UNIDO s Support. Shri Gautham Gopalakrishna spoke about latest technological advancements in CLRI on Automated CAD tools and the new services on CAD design areas available for companies. Mr.John Sundar elaborated the Best Practices in Leather Manufacturing, starting from soaking to finishing. Rural Technologies CSIR-CLRI participated in a Demonstration-Cum-Workshop on CSIR rural technologies held at Tripura during 2 3 February, 202. The workshop was organized by CSIR North East Institute of Science & Technology, Jorhat in collaboration with Tripura State Council of Science & Technology. Mr. Keshab Chandra Mondal of RCED-Kolkata represented CLRI at the workshop. Leathers and combination bags utilizing ethnic materials typical of North East region were exhibited in the workshop. Posters highlighting the rural technologies available with CLRI were also displayed. Visitors to the stall enquired about training various courses on leather goods and footwear making conducted at the institute. Footwear Design Workshop CSIR-CLRI conducted a work shop on Footwear Design at Kolhapur for five days commencing from 9th March 202 for the benefit of artisans to prepare them to independently create their own designs for the market trends and business opportunities. This workshop is the first of its kind in the history of Kolhapur which paves them a way forward for brighter career openings and also aids for the generation of footwear designers amongst the artisan communities in the future. Thirty artisans selected for this work shop based on their skills shown during the general training programme in Kolhapur. India-Africa Technology Partnership Programme CSIR-CLRI participated in the India-Africa Technology Partnership Programme organized by CII-EXIM Bank at Hotel Taj Palace from 8-20 March 202 where in CSIR, New Delhi installed a Stall high lighting the CSIR Technologies available for Transfer to African Nations. CLRI has displayed bromides depicting various activities of the Institute, Technologies developed, On-going, Completed Projects and projects on the pipeline with African Countries specifically with Govt. of Ethiopia, leathers, Leather goods, Footwear Materials. Two member team from CLRI explained the various activities of CLRI and its contribution in the growth of Leather Industry in India as well as in African countries and the significance of the work done by Experts from CSIR-CLRI for the development of Leather sector and to enhance the quality of education in the field of Leather Technology in the land of Ethiopia Kolurveri CSIR-CLRI made a presentation in the dissemination programme Vaniyambadi: Tradition meets Kolourveri, held on Tuesday 20 March 202 on the occasion of CLE Awareness Programmes for the benefit of the Members of Vaniyambadi held at Vaniyambadi Tanners Association (VTA), beginning with the release of the CD Vaniyambadi: Tradition meets Kolourveri that contained ten presentations covering seasons: Autumn Winter 2/ 3, Spring Summer 203 and Autumn Winter 3/ 4 seasons. Shri Md Sadiq, CSIR-CLRI presented the Leather, Colour, Material and Texture Trends for the Spring Summer 203 season. He also reviewed the Autumn Winter 2/ 3 season and gave sneak preview of the Autumn Winter 3/ 4 season. He reiterated that the objective of the dissemination programme to enable the Tanners and product manufacturers to gear up for the forthcoming APLF & LINEAPELLE Fairs that would be addressing the Spring Summer 203 season and gave tips for preparing for these expositions. Shri Gautham Gopalakrishna, CSIR-CLRI highlighted the performance of Vaniyambadi Tanners in the MODEUROP endeavour in successive seasons and also underlined the benefits that accrue by participating in this exercise especially in view of the recognition and acknowledgement from MODEUROP in their official Colour Card which is circulated globally. CSIR-CLRI provided all participants with copies of the MODEUROP Colour card for the Autumn Winter 2/ 3 season and requested the members present to go back to their Tanneries and draw references to such of the Colours that were in production matching to the colours of the Colour card so that members could gain confidence in using the MODEUROP Colour card in the coming seasons. Also given was the MODEUROP fashion Trends and Retail Photopack. CSIR-CLRI team was complimented for their untiring efforts in reaching out valuable fashion and design intelligence which was so vital in helping the Industry always stay a step ahead. 4

5 Training Programmes, Ph. D.Viva Voce, APLF, SAARC Fair & Crosslinx APLF Mr.Md.Sadiq, CSIR-CLRI, participated in the Asia Pacific Leather Fair held in Hongkong from March 28-30, 202. India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO) organized "India Pavilion and showcased the advancement made by Indian designs over the years to the rest of the world in the Fair. A number of Indian Exhibitors responded to CSIR-CLRI s call to display their merchandise at the Materials Trend Space. Several interesting new developments in Leathers & Materials by Indian companies was found at the Trend Area. Four Indian companies had their Leathers/ Materials/ Products nominated in the various categories. Fifteen exhibitors at the Materials, Manufacturing & Technology (MM&T) and Fashion Access fairs, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, were presented with the Best of APLF Awards (BOAA) in ceremonies on March 28, attended by members of the leather and fashion industries. Shri Md.Sadiq was one of the Judges in the Panel of eleven for selection of best APLF awards 202. Indian exhibitors were overwhelmed by the response at this edition. SAARC Trade Fair Dr. K. Srinivasan, CSIR-CLRI participated in the th SAARC Trade Fair & Tourism Mart 202 at Dhaka, Bangladesh organized by ITPO during 30 March - April 202 and installed a Stall displaying representative samples of leather goods, Footwear, Leathers and bromides of Cleaner Leather Technologies, training Programmes offered, courses conducted and various options of waste water treatment technologies available. Indian High Commissioner for Bangladesh visited the stall and he has been apprised of CLRI activities. The response to the stall is very enthusiastic and many queries were well taken and appreciated by one and all who visited the stall. Name of the University Anna University No. of Trainees 2 Date of Public Viva Voce CROSSLINX, an annual event, was organized, from 23 rd to 25 th February 202, by the Department of Leather Technology, Anna University & CLRI. It is the summit responsible for the development of a synergetic relationship between the Leather student community and the Leather Industry in the country. Prof.Dr. A.B.Mandal, Director, CSIR-CLRI during inauguration said that Anna University is a premier university and CLRI occupies a significant place in Leather science, and the students emanating from this unique partnership must have the pride for studying in Anna University and CLRI. He wished all success to the CROSSLINX 2 organisers to conduct this symposium in a grand manner and he was sure that the student fraternity trained from these two premier institutes will keep up image of the two living institutions. The honourable Vice Chancellor of Anna University said he felt good to see the students of leather technology in the th edition of CROSSLINX! He further added that, as an intellectual father, he was happier than the previous visit every time to see his wards doing well in all aspects! He put on record his sincere gratitude to CLRI for its commitment to the tertiary level of Leather education. The other dignitaries graced the inauguration ceremony were Mr. Andrea Ceretta, Business Director and Head - South Asia, Leather Chemicals BASF India. Varied events were conducted during the three day symposium from paper presentation, photography to Journalism. Students from various Universities across the states of India participated in the symposium. Even two students from Spain attended the three day deliberations. A new event, LESIG (Leather Students and Industry Get-together) born out of LERIG (Leather Research and Industry Get-together), the hallmark event of CLRI to have an interface with the leather industry annually, has been kick started during this CROSSLINX 202 with an inspiration to serve as a direct interface between leather students and industry annually. The forum had dignitaries, Mr.Andrea Ceretta from BASF, Mr.O.K.Kaul of Tata International, Mr.N.R Jaganathan who was the moderator for LESIG, Mr.Chander an executive member of ALFA, and Mr.Gnanasundaram of C.Kalyanam& Co. They formed the face of the industry.the event was supposed to be an interaction but turned out to be a much needed debate among the students and the industrialists. In conclusion, both the parties explained their pros and cons and it turned out to be an all is well in the end, an event of this sort must be implemented by other departments symposia, to make sure that students understand what is required and plan themselves accordingly. Dr.T.Ramasami, Secretary to Government of India, Department of Science and Technology was the chief guest on the valediction day. Shri N Shafeeq Ahmed, Chairman, IFLMEA, Mr. Intisar M Medekar, Head, CLE Youth Wing and Prof. Dr. A.B.Mandal, Director, CLRI have addressed in the function. Fashion Show, Leather Expo and Management Workshop were the highlights of this year. The expo sensitized the visitors about the path travelled over millions of years by the leather making activity and painted a positive picture on the future of the leather industry with a model township proposal that will clinically eliminate all the burgeoning issues of the leather industry. Winner s of the events was awarded with cash prize, medals and mementos. Dr.T.Ramasami in his valedictory address said that students venturing in to a new phase of life after their graduation should follow the principles of Acceptance, Achievement, Accomplishment and Acknowledgement and explaining these four A-s citing him as an example to come up in life and successful in achieving his goal to serve humanity. Over all, the technical extravaganza provided a common platform for students in diverse disciplines project their abilities. 5

KKSK Tanning Company, Erode African Delegates Visit A two member delegation comprising Mr.Abisha Peter Tembo, Chief Director and Mr.Jeywant Irkhede, Director, Dept. of Trade and Industry, Republic of South Africa, visited CSIR-CLRI on the 22 nd February 202 seeking technical co-operation and intervention of this Institute for the development of leather sector in South Africa. The delegation had a discussion with Prof.Dr.A.B.Mandal, Director, CSIR-CLRI in the presence of some senior scientists of the Institute. The delegation has emphasized on the need for capacity building in South African Leather sector with the expert invention from this Institute. Later, the delegation visited some of the key areas of the Institute to have detailed interactions. All Africa Leather Fair 202 The Fifth All African Leather Fair (AALF 202) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, was inaugurated by the His Excellency Mr.Tadesse Haile on st March, 202 in the Millennium Hall. The trade fair has been organized by ELIA, LIDI, UNDP, COMESA- LLPI, UNIDO & MOI and participated by tanners, footwear and other leather goods manufacturers, equipment and technology suppliers, chemical and inputs suppliers, manpower training institutions, trade promotion organizations, etc from all over the world from 38 countries. African companies and organizations participated in the fair in large numbers. Considerable amount of Italian and Indian companies and visitors also participated in the Fair. According to the organizers, companies engaged in leather industry from Kenya, Sudan, South Africa, Namibia and Tanzania from Africa, and others from Germany, France, Switzerland, USA, Japan, China and Indonesia were among the displayers of products in the fair. Many technical events related to leather industries in Ethiopia were conducted by the organizers for the benefits of the participants. CLRI stall attracted visitors from various African countries and others looking for technical assistance related to Academic, Leather Processing, Environmental issues and others. Dr. B.
