6 Higher National Unit Support Notes Runway and Editorial Hair and Make-up Skills Unit support notes are offered as guidance and are not mandatory. While the exact time allocated to this unit is at the discretion of the centre, the notional design length is 80 hours. Guidance on the content and context for this unit The purpose of this unit is to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to enable them to perform make-up and hairstyles for fashion industry runway events and editorial photoshoots. Learners will research current runway and editorial make-up and hair trends and the associated products, tools and equipment which will enable them to apply this knowledge when planning, preparing and performing these make-up looks for female and male models. The information gathered during the investigation for Outcome 1 will provide learners with the underpinning knowledge necessary to plan runway and editorial make up looks and hairstyles. The skills developed during Outcome 2 will enable learners to perform these looks in Outcome 3. The skills developed during Outcome 3 will enable learners to perform the planned make up applications and hairstyles while following design plans. Learners should be encouraged to use their imagination and develop their own interpretation of current trends. Learners should be encouraged to develop an awareness of current products and techniques to enable them to make an informed choice when planning their looks. Skills in design and planning are essential. Design plans and face charts must be of a professional standard. Learners are required to have an awareness of risk assessment and relevant health and safety legislation and their responsibilities under this, but are not required to have an in-depth knowledge. Knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 and any subsequent amendments and the Electricity at Work Act 1992 is recommended. J0H3 34, Runway and Editorial Make-up and Hair Skills 6
7 Higher National Unit Support Notes (cont) Runway and Editorial Hair and Make-up Skills Guidance on approaches to delivery of this unit Outcome 1 Learners must be introduced to a variety of methods and sources for conducting the investigation and given time to undertake the task. Learner must be provided with a timeline for submission and feedback provided prior to undertaking Outcome 2. Learners must be given guidelines on how to structure a referenced bibliography. (Harvard referencing is recommended) Learners must be given guidance on the acceptable standards for presenting evidence in a mood board format referring to current industry requirements. Outcome 2 Demonstration should be provided for the creation of design plans and completion of face charts to ensure learners are aware of the acceptable standards for SCQF level 7 and to enable the learner to see the importance of planning for the make up application and hairstyles. Outcome 3 Demonstration of current runway and editorial trends should be provided. Time should be given for practice and formative assessment prior to assessment. Learners must be made aware of relevant health and safety legislation and their responsibilities under this, but are not required to have an in-depth knowledge. Guidance on approaches to assessment of this unit Evidence can be generated using different types of assessment. The following are suggestions only. There may be other methods that would be more suitable to learners. Centres are reminded that prior verification of centre-devised assessments would help to ensure that the national standard is being met. Where learners experience a range of assessment methods, this helps them to develop different skills that should be transferable to work or further and higher education. Outcome 1 is an independent investigation task and could be assessed under openbook conditions. Learners should be provided with an assignment brief detailing the assessment requirements and given a date for submission. This outcome should be delivered and assessed prior to Outcomes 2 and 3. Outcome 2 is an independent planning and design task and could be assessed under open-book conditions. Learners should be provided with a brief detailing the assessment requirements and given a date for submission. This outcome should be delivered and assessed prior to the assessment of Outcome 3. Outcome 3 is a practical performance task and requires learners to plan and perform four practical tasks on models. Each practical performance should take place in an appropriate salon/make up studio environment under supervised conditions and the outcome of the assessment recorded by the assessor on an observation checklist. 8 Higher National Unit Support Notes (cont) Runway and Editorial Hair and Make-up Skills Opportunities for e-assessment E-assessment may be appropriate for some assessments in this unit. By e-assessment we mean assessment which is supported by Information and Communication Technology (ICT), such as e-testing or the use of e-portfolios or social software. Centres which wish to use e-assessment must ensure that the national standard is applied to all learner evidence and that conditions of assessment as specified in the evidence requirements are met, regardless of the mode of gathering evidence. The most up-to-date guidance on the use of e-assessment to support SQA s qualifications is available at Opportunities for developing Core and other essential skills This unit provides learners with the opportunity to develop the Core Skills, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at SCQF level 5 and Problem Solving and SCQF level 5. If the learner uses ICT to assist with research, reviewing, planning and production of evidence for current runway and editorial make-up and hair trends, there may be opportunities to develop aspects of ICT at SCQF level 5 by demonstrating that they can use IT systems to process a range of information. Learners should be encouraged to use different software packages, carryout searches and produce high quality documents which include graphics in different formats. Problem Solving involves three distinct component activities Critical Thinking, Planning, Organising, and Review and Evaluation. Critical Thinking should be employed to interpret a brief or identified tasks within the unit, with Planning and Organisation required to set objectives, timelines and produce the finished make-up looks. Review and Evaluation will be developed as the learners apply products and techniques and refines the finished look prior to presentation of the finished product for assessment purposes. Learners should be encouraged to use two main communication skills (listening skills, verbal, communication skills) during interactions with models.
